Divisibility Rules
The following tests for divisibility tell us what
number is exactly divisible by another.
Divisibility by 2
-Numbers ending with an even digit are divisible by
2.
Examples: 894 759 250 456 876
Divisibility by 5
- Numbers ending in 0 or 5 are divisible by 5
Examples: 1 895 51 780 456 895
Divisibility by 10
-Numbers ending in 0 are divisible by 10 and also by
both 2 and 5.
Examples: 23 080 185 560 789 120
2
Divisibility by 3
- If the sum of the digits of a number is divisible by 3,
then the number is divisible by 3.
Examples:
a. 5 220 is divisible by 3 because 5 + 2 + 2 + 0 = 9,
and 9 is divisible by 3.
b. 92 148 is divisible by 3 because 9 + 2 + 1 + 4 + 8 =
24, and 24 is divisible by 3
c. 805 614 003 is divisbile by 3 because 8 + 0 + 5 +
6 + 1 + 4 + 0 + 0 + 3 = 27 and 27 is divisible by 3
Divisibility by 9
- If the sum of the digits of a number is divisible by 9,
then the number is divisible by 9.
Examples:
a. 12 456 = 1 + 2 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 18
b. 58 068 = 5 + 8 + 0 + 6 + 8 = 27
3
Divisibility by 6
- All numbers divisible by both 2 and 3 are divisible
by 6. This means that any even number whose sum
of its digits is divisible by 3 is divisible by 6.
Examples:
a. 6 420 = ends in 0 (even)
6 + 4 + 2 + 0 = 12, which is divisible by 3.
b. 11 052 = ends in 2 (even)
1 + 1 + 0 + 5 + 2 = 9, which is divisible by 3.
4
Divisibiltiy by 4
- If the last two digits of a number are divisible by 4,
then the number is divisible by 4. Also numbers
ending in two zeros are divisible by 4.
Examples:
45 012 852 820 7 415 736
21 729 900 502 719 328 6 234 700
Divisibility by 8
- If the last three digits of a numbers are divisible by
8, then the number is divisible by 8. Also, numbers
ending in three 0s are divisible by 8.
Examples:
28 808 14 048 428 072
7 809 240 256 814 000 897 234 000
6
Divisibility by 7
- To find out if a number is divisible by 7, take the
last digit, double it, and subract it from the rest of
the number. If the answer is divisible by 7 (inluding
zero), then the original number is divisible by. Apply
the rele repeatedly if necessary.
Examples:
a. 819 – the last digit is 9.
2 x 9 = 18
81 – 18 = 63
63 is divisible by 7, therefore 819 is divisible by 7.
Divisibility by 11
- A number is divisible by 11 if the difference of the
sum of digits at odd places and the sum of its digits
at even places, is either 0 or divisible by 11.
Examples:
a. 6 613 585 – (sum of digits at odd places) – (sum of
digits at even)
(6 + 1 + 5 + 5) – (6 + 3 + 8) =
17 - 17 =0
- 6 613 585 is divisible by 11.
c. 13 185 648 – (1 + 1 + 5 + 4) = 11 (3 + 8 + 6 + 8) =
25
9
25 – 11 = 14
- 13 185 648 is not divisible by 11
Divisibility by 12
- A number is divisible by 12 if it is divisible by 3 and
4
Examples:
a. 34 164 – The sum of the digits (3 + 4 + 1 + 6 + 4 =
18) 18 is divisible by 3.
- The number formed by the last two digits (64) is
divisible by 4.
