Additional Instructions Intelligent Cleaning

1 Intelligent Cleaning: Functional Description

The cleaning quality of 3D printed parts depends, among other things,

on the contamination of the cleaning liquid. The contamination of the
cleaning liquid is affected, among others, by the following factors:
— Type and size of the print job
— Drip time of the print job
— Number of printed parts
— Number of cleaning cycles performed
— Printing material
The new ‘Intelligent Cleaning’ function evaluates some of these factors
and thus supports you in optimizing the cleaning quality by means of
— avoiding the mixing of colors,
— avoiding the mixing of materials and
— avoiding the use of saturated cleaning liquid.
In order to make this possible, the cleaning bottles must be equipped
with RFID tags. The information required for the intelligent cleaning
process will be saved on these RFID tags. Helpful information and
prohibited actions will thereby be shown on the display.
If you want to use this new functionality, the function must be activated
in the settings. → Chapter 2.1

2.2 Make the Settings

Once the ‘Intelligent Cleaning’ function is activated, the following
setting options can be made:
— ‘Saturation Settings‘ → Chapter 2.2.1
— ‘Cleanliness Grade Settings‘ → Chapter 2.2.2

Figure 3: ‘Intelligent Cleaning‘ activated

2.2.1 Saturation Settings

The saturation is the saturation of the cleaning liquid.

The cleanliness and thus also the cleaning performance
of the cleaning liquid depends on the amount of
material to be cleaned from the print job. The cleaning
liquid is therefore saturated at different times depending
on the print job.
The saturation display is an approximate value and
serves as an orientation to estimate the degree of
contamination of the cleaning liquid roughly.
The operator must check the saturation of the cleaning
liquid and is responsible for the cleanliness of the
cleaned parts.
The saturation display is given as a percentage in
relation to a full cleaning bottle (800 ml).

Show saturation info at… To keep an overview of the saturation of your cleaning liquid, you can
set from which degree of saturation the saturation of each cleaning
bottle is displayed before each cleaning process:
1. Check the ‘Show saturation info at‘ box.
2. Set from which degree of saturation the saturation of each bottle
should be displayed automatically. To do this, press the arrow
buttons to set the percentage value. (By default, the degree of
saturation is displayed at 75%.)
At a lower saturation value, the saturation display will be shown
earlier than at a higher value.

Rapid Shape GmbH │ DOCR000409 6 │ 29

Additional Instructions Intelligent Cleaning

Figure 4: ‘Saturation Settings‘, degree of saturation indicator set at 75%

Allow the use of cleaning liquid If the cleaning liquid reaches a saturation of 100%, it must be checked
with 100% saturation… whether the liquid can still absorb material or whether it must be
replaced. You can allow or prohibit the use of cleaning liquid with a
saturation of 100%:
1. Check the ‘Allow the use of cleaning liquid with 100%
saturation‘ box if you want to allow the use of cleaning liquid
with a saturation of 100%.
In this case, you can continue cleaning with a liquid which has a
degree of saturation of over 100%. However, to do so, you must
confirm that the cleaning liquid is OK and that it can still absorb
material.
2. Do not check the box if you generally do not want to allow the
use of cleaning liquid with a saturation of 100%.
3. Make the settings for the cleanliness grade. → Chapter 2.2.2

2.2.2 Cleanliness Grade Settings

The Cleanliness Grade is the degree of cleanliness

(class) of a printing material. Each printing material is
assigned to a cleanliness grade. During the cleaning
process, the cleanliness grade of the printing material
will be saved on the RFID tag of the cleaning bottle.
The Cleanliness Grade is given in a numerical value
from 0-100. The more pure/critical a material is, the
lower is the cleanliness grade.
Example: Biocompatible printing materials have a
cleanliness grade of 10, technical materials have a
higher/less critical cleanliness grade, e.g. 30. A fresh
bottle of cleaning liquid stands for the purest material
and has the lowest cleanliness grade, class 0.
In principle, only materials and cleaning liquids with the
same cleanliness grade should come into contact with
each other. However, it is possible to clean a printing
material of a higher cleanliness grade with a cleaning
liquid of a lower cleanliness grade, provided that this is
allowed in the settings.
Example: The print job consists of a material with the
cleanliness grade 30, the cleaning liquid is assigned to
the cleanliness grade 10.
→ Possible, but the cleaning liquid will be downgraded
from 10 to 30 and cannot be used for a purer cleaning
afterwards!
Exception! The print job consists of a material with the
cleanliness grade 10, the cleaning liquid is assigned to
the cleanliness grade 30.
→ Not possible, as the print job will be contaminated
by an unclean cleaning liquid.

Allow the use of cleaning liquid To allow cleaning with a cleaning liquid of a lower cleanliness grade,
with lower cleanliness grade… please proceed as follows:
1. Check the ‘Allow the use of cleaning liquid with lower
cleanliness grade’ box.

Figure 6: ‘Cleanliness Grade Settings‘, use of cleaning liquid with lower

cleanliness grade allowed

Rapid Shape GmbH │ DOCR000409 8 │ 29

Additional Instructions Intelligent Cleaning

Some printing materials can be assigned to the same

cleanliness grade in the material database, but may
differ in color (e.g. transparent and opaque materials).
When transparent or white materials are mixed with
strongly colored materials (e.g. red, blue), the use of the
same cleaning liquid can cause color residues on the
print jobs made from lighter materials.
In order to prevent mixing of materials, it is possible to
set in the settings for the cleanliness grade whether only
unmixed (single-type) cleaning is allowed or not.

Allow mixing of materials… To allow mixing of materials (and cleaning liquids), please proceed as
follows:
1. Check the ‘Allow mixing of materials‘ box.
2. Press the ‘Return ‘ button and then the ’Home ’ button to
return to the operator interface.

3 Prepare the Cleaning Liquid Container

3.1 Equip the Cleaning Liquid Container

The new ‘Intelligent Cleaning’ functionality is based on
RFID technology and helps you optimize the cleaning
quality of your print jobs.
However, if the bottles are positioned incorrectly, e.g. if
the RFID tags point away from the reader or the Pre-
Cleaning and Final Cleaning bottles are interchanged,
an error occurs and a warning message will be
displayed. Therefore, make sure that the cleaning liquid
container is equipped correctly.

N O TE !
Wearing protective gloves protects the skin from contact
with skin damaging materials. During work steps in
which you work with printing materials, we therefore
always recommend the wearing of protective gloves.

To equip the cleaning liquid container with cleaning bottles, please

proceed as follows:
1. Put on protective gloves.
2. Hold the upper part of the container with one hand and reach
into the opening slot for the RFID reader with the other hand.
3. Press and hold the inner locking plate of the container through
the hole with your thumb.
