HDL I (Lecture 1)

This document provides an overview of digital design concepts and the design process. It introduces digital hardware components like standard chips, programmable logic devices, and custom-designed chips. The design process involves specification, design, implementation, verification and testing. Digital systems have components like processors, memory and I/O devices connected using a printed circuit board. The design flow for logic circuits involves specification, RTL design, synthesis, simulation and verification. It discusses the importance of understanding theory for effective use of CAD tools in digital design.

CHAPTER 1
DESIGN CONCEPTS

Chapter Objectives
In this chapter you will be introduced to:
• Digital hardware components
• An overview of integrated circuit technology
• The design process for digital hardware
Digital Hardware
• Standard Chips
-Numerous chips are available that realize some commonly used logic circuits
-Functionality of each chip is fixed and cannot be changed

• Programmable Logic Devices

-The designer can implement whatever functions are needed for a particular application
by choosing an appropriate configuration of the switches
-The switches are programmed by the end user

• Custom-Designed Chips
- The logic circuitry that must be included on the chip is designed first and then an
appropriate technology is chosen to implement the chip.

The Design Process
Introducing a typical
development cycle in the most
general terms.

The Design of Digital Hardware
Consider the structure of a typical computer;

Why should one study the theory that is no longer needed for manual design? Why
not simply learn how to use the CAD tools?
