Instructions: Answer the following questions completely. Show all solutions and box your final answers. Answers may be
handwritten or typewritten.

1) Ten parts are measured three times by the same operator in a gage capability study. The data are shown below.

a) Describe the measurement error that results from the use of this gauge.
b) Estimate the total variability and product variability.
c) What percentage of total variability is due to the gauge?
d) If the specifications on the part are 100±15, find the P/T Ratio for this gauge. Is the gauge adequate?

2) In a study to isolate both gauge repeatability and gauge reproducibility, two operators use the same gauge to
measure ten parts three times each. The data are shown below.

a) Estimate gauge repeatability and reproducibility.


b) Estimate the standard deviation of measurement error.
c) If the specifications are at 50±10, what can you say about gauge capability?

3) Suppose that a single-sampling plan with n = 150 and c = 2 is being used for receiving inspection where the
supplier ships the product in lots of size N = 3,000.

a) Draw the OC curve for this plan.


b) Draw the AOQ curve and find the AOQL.
c) Draw the ATI curve for this plan.

4) A product is shipped in lots of size N = 2000. We would like to find the Dodge-Romig single sampling plan for
which the LTPD = 1%, assuming that the process average is 0.25% defective. What is n, c, and the AOQL (in
percentage) for this sampling plan?
5) MIL STD 105E is being used to inspect incoming lots of size N = 5000. Single sampling, general inspection level II,
and an AQL of 0.15% are being used. Determine the sample size (n), acceptance number (Ac), and rejection
number (Re) for a reduced inspection level.

6) A belt that is used in a drive mechanism in a copier machine is required to have a minimum tensile strength of
LSL = 150 lb. It is known from long experience that σ = 5 lb for this particular belt. Find a variables sampling plan
so that p1 = 0.005, p2 = 0.02, α = 0.05, and β = 0.10. Assume that Procedure 1 (k-method) is to be used.

7) An inspector for a military agency desires a variable sampling plan for a normal inspection level with an AQL of
1.5%, assuming that lots are of size 7000. If the standard deviation of the lot is unknown and LSL is set to be 24.3
units, derive a single sampling plan for variables using Procedure 1 from the MIL-STD414. Using the number of
samples from the sampling plan, if we estimated 𝑥̅ = 25.2 and s = 0.5 from the samples of one lot, would we
accept that lot?
