“A Faithful Catechist”
If you are poor and somebody offers you
a big sum of money on the condition that
you will stop what you have been doing
and start doing something else, what will
you do? For Laureana Franco, a catechist
popularly known as Ka Luring, the choice
was easy. She was poor and the big sum of
money would make a difference in her life,
but she just could not turn away from what
she has been faithfully doing for many
years––being a catechist. That is why when
a group from another religion offered
money for her to be their teacher, she said
no without any hesitation.
Ka Luring was a well-loved volunteer catechist. She does not get paid for
teaching children in the public school about Jesus but she was very dedicated, not
missing any chance to be with the children. Each day, she would wake up at 4:00
in the morning, go to Mass then proceed to the school where she is assigned to
teach. When she is not busy teaching, she spent her time caring for the poor and
elderly.

Deepening
There are ordinary people around us who show us what it means to be faithful to
the work we are called to do. One such person is Ka Luring, an ordinary woman
who did not have a high position in society and who did not have possessions
she could boast of. She was a volunteer catechist who never failed in her duties to
teach children in the public schools about Jesus. Her influence did not stop with
these children. Because of the holiness of her life, she also influenced seminarians,
priests, and those who were not cared for by society—the poor and the sick. Her
being faithful, her holiness, and her love for God and for others clearly tell us that
she is a virtuous person.

Read the story of the Gospel “Final Advice to the Christians in Philippi” (Phil. 4:8-9)
Final Advice to the Christians in Philippi
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever
is gracious, if there is any excellence and if
there is anything worthy of praise, think
about these things. Keep on doing what
you have learned and received and heard
and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you.
Deepening

St. Paul teaches in his letter to the Corinthians. Her actions are honorable, just, pure, lovely, gracious, and worthy of praise.
And because she always did all those good actions, she achieved excellence in doing
them. By her life, she showed us what virtues mean—these virtues are the good
actions that we constantly and consistently do. And because we always practice
these good actions, we become excellent at doing them. A good action done only
once or twice or only during certain occasions do not develop into virtues. Thus
if we are honest only when other people are looking at us, we do not possess the
virtue of honesty. If we pray only when we need something from God, we do not

possess the virtue of prayerfulness.

 Virtue is the capacity and the habitual desire to do good.

 The theological virtues are faith, hope, and charity or love.

 Faith is the theological virtue that allows us to believe in God and what He has revealed to us and what the Holy Church

teaches.
 Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire what God has promised us which is eternal life in the Kingdom of heaven.

 Charity or love is the theological virtue by which we love God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves.

 There are four cardinal virtues: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance.

 Prudence is the virtue by which we discern what would be the correct action in any given situation.

 Justice is the virtue that is concerned with giving God and our neighbor what is rightly their due.

 Fortitude is the virtue by which we remain strong in times of difficulties and in our quest for the good.

 Temperance is the virtue that grants us self-control.

 Prayer and the Eucharist nurture the virtues in us.
