UNIT-II

10 a) A 3 phase full convertor charges a battery from a 3 phase supply of 230V,50 Hz. The
battery emf is 200V and its internal resistance is 0.5. On account of inductance connected in
series with the battery, charging current is constant at 20A. Compute the firing angle delay and
the supply power factor.
b)In case it is desired that power flows from dc source to ac load in part (a), find the firing
angle delay for the same current.

11 a) A 3 phase full convertor feeds power to a resistive load of 10. For a firing
angle delay of 300, the load takes 5KW. Find the magnitude of per phase input supply voltage.
b)repeat part (a) in case a larger reactor in series with load renders the load current ripple free .

12 A 3-phase full convertor bridge is connected to supply voltage of 230V per phase and a
frequency of 50 Hz. The source inductance is 4 mH. The load current on DC side is constant at
20A. If the load consists of a dc voltage of 400V having an internal resistance of 1, then
calculate: a) firing angle delay b)overlap angle in degrees.

UNIT-III
1 What are the different control strategies in choppers and what are the disadvantages in
frequency modulation compared to pulse width modulation.

2 Explain Step up chopper and derive the load voltage and currents with R, RL and RLE loads.

3 EXplain Step down chopper with necessary waveforms.

4 For type A chopper circuit, source voltage Vs = 230V, chopping period T = 2000 s, on-period
= 600 s, load circuit parameters: R = 1, L = 5 mH and E = 24 V.

b. Calculate the value of average output current.
c.Compute the maximum and minimum values of steady state output current.
