Activity #1 - Examples of Information Systems

This document provides examples of three common types of information systems: [1] Transaction processing systems which collect user data to facilitate transactions like online ticket booking; [2] Management information systems which analyze transaction data to generate management reports on organizational performance; and [3] Decision support systems which use data and analysis to help managers solve dynamic problems and identify optimal solutions. The document also provides a scenario where an analyst might use analytical, technical, managerial, and interpersonal skills in managing a software development project.

Activity #1: Examples of Information Systems (18 pts.)

1. Identify 3 examples of information systems and describe each briefly (3-5

sentences only). Please fill-up the table below (Note: Please include the
source/s of your answers.):
(12 pts.)
Examples of Information Brief description
Systems

An example is an online flight ticket booking

Transaction Processing System system that collects user information and
creates an airline ticket and charge. Sales,
accounting, finance, manufacturing,
engineering, human resources, and
marketing are common organizational
departments that use transaction processing
systems. Data can be generated via sales
orders, cash transactions, accounting,
inventory management, depreciation
accounting, and so on.

A management information system (MIS) is

used to monitor the organization's
performance. The findings of the TPS are fed
Management Information into the MIS, which generates management
System reports that can anticipate or regulate future
organizational performance. An MIS can be
used in a variety of ways within the firm, such
as a budgeting system to collect information
in order to create accurate monthly or annual
budgets based on reports of how much
money the organization has spent over a
given period of time. Other examples include
a sales system that analyzes data collected
at the point of sale and a human resource
information system that gathers information
about personnel, attendance, performance
management, and so on.

Managers employ decision support systems

Decision Support System to find answers to challenges with a dynamic
nature. To determine the optimal solution or
workaround for a given issue, this type of
technology leverages data from internal
systems such as TPS and MIS. They use
mathematical models and statistical analysis
to identify solutions.

2. Assuming that you are an analyst of a certain software development project.

Give a situation wherein the 3 skills are used. Please be specific how each skill
is applied through a scenario. (6 pts.)
If I am the analyst of certain software development project I can used the skills
in the following;

Analytical - With this skill, I will analyze the requirements obtained from
stakeholders and translate them into a clear project specification. I will use my
analytical talents to break down difficult needs into smaller, more manageable
components. I will identify potential difficulties and opportunities while ensuring
that the project specs are clear, comprehensive, and in line with the software's
aims.

Technical - After completing the project specifications, I may design the

architecture and choose the best technologies for software development. I will
select the appropriate programming languages, databases, and frameworks.
My technological experience is critical for ensuring that the program is not only
functional, but also efficient and secure. Define coding guidelines and best
practices.

Managerial - The development phase is begun, and I am in charge of
