Logarithm

1.1 Definition : If a and N be two positive real numbers, a  1 and if x is a real number satisfying the

relation ax  N , then x is called the logarithm of N to the base a and it is written as x  loga N .

 ax  N  x  loga N

Conversely, loga N  x  N  ax

Illustration :

1. 23  8  3  log2 8

2. 52  .04   2  log 5 .04 

Conversely,

1. log 3 81  4  34  81

2
2
2. log 8 4   8 3  4
3

Note :

1. Logarithm of a negative number be a complex number.

2. The logarithm of same number with respect to different bases may be different.

Illustration : 
log 2 64  6  2 6  64 

log 4 64  3  4 3  64 

log 8 64  6  8 2  64 

log 64 64  1  641  64 
3. The logarithm of a number with base 10 is called Common Logarithm, whereas the logarithm of a

number with base e is called Napierian Logarithm. In calculus, the base is taken as e for logarithm.
