ANGLES

Trigometry - measurement of triangles.

ANGLE MEASURE

STANDARD POSITION

The initial side of an angle in standard position is always located on the positive x-axis.

POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ANGLES

When sketching angles always use an arrow to show direction.
Positive angle - counter clockwise
Negative angle - clockwise

MEASURING ANGLE - the measure of an angle is determined by the amount of rotation from
the initial side to the terminal side.

THERE ARE TWO COMMON WAYS TO MEASURE ANGLES

In degrees
In Radians

Degrees - denoted by the symbol °

Radians -

One radian is the measure of a central angle ø

that intercepts are s equal in length to the radius r of the circle.

In general, ø = s/r

2 π radians corresponds to 360°

π radians corresponds to 180°
π / 2 radians corresponds to 90°

CLASSIFYING ANGLES

Angles are often classified according to quadrant in which their terminal sides lie.

CLASSIFYING ANGLES

Standard position angles that have their terminal side on one of the axes called quadrantal
angles.

FOR EXAMPLES: 0°, 90°, 180°, 270°, 360° ….. are quadrantal angles.

TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTION - right triangle

are real functions which relate an angle of a right-angled triangle to ratios of two side
lengths.
SOH CAH TOA

Sin - Opposite/Hypotenuse

Cos - Adjacent/Hypotenuse

Tan - Opposite/Adjacent

WHEN HYPOTENUSE IS MISSING:

c is hypotenuse
a is adjacent
b is opposite
c2 = a2 + b2 formula.

WHEN ADJACENT IS MISSING:

COTERMINAL ANGLES AND REFERENCE ANGLE (UNIT CIRCLE)

Coterminal Angles - Two angles are coterminal when

they have the same initial and terminal side. The terminal side may rotate

either the clockwise or counter clockwise direction.

Where:

θ – Given Angle

n – number of rotation

* Instead of memorizing the formula, just add 360°/2π

if the rotation is counter clockwise and subtract 360°/2π if

the rotation is clockwise then add or subtract more if the rotations is 2 or more

ANGLE MEASUREMENT UNITS

Example: Find the coterminal

angle in counter clockwise (CC) and clockwise direction (C)

REFERENCE ANGLES

Any smallest positive acute angle

that is measured from terminal side of a given angle to the nearest x – axis.
In solving for reference angles,

you should be able to find first the quadrant where it is located.
