Topics for Module 4: Operating System Installation
Topic 1: Computer Hardware and Software Installation
Computer Software Installation
The operating system of your computer is an important factor to be considered
when you install any software. The operating system is the program that is contrived to
run the computer software on your computer. The operating system is responsible for
managing the computer software and hardware. Before you install computer software,
the first important step is to check the configuration of your computer. Also, check the
hardware and software requirement of the software you are installing. The
configuration of your computer must match the requirements of the software to be
installed. Sometimes, the software to be installed is compressed in a .RAR or .ZIP file.
In these cases, before you install the software you have to uncompress all the
installation files and folders. To uncompress the files and folders, ensure that you have
a decompression software application installed on your computer.
Every computer software comes with a 'Read me' file. This 'Read me' file
contains all the instructions that are required to install the software on your computer.
Sometimes, when you install software, the software may ask you to install another
program that is required for the proper execution of the software to be installed. The
computer may even prompt you to install the supporting software after you complete
the installation. When you install any software program on the computer, it is advisable
to close all other programs and utilities. Some antivirus software applications may
require you to turn off the firewall and disable the antivirus in order to install the
software. When installing software applications related to computer networking or web
browsing, it is recommended to disable the antivirus and the firewall. Finally, to
complete the installation, restart your computer system.

Computer Hardware Installation

The computer technology is progressing daily and the computer peripherals are
upgraded often. Unplug all the power cords of your computer that are connected to the
mains, before connecting the hardware. The computer hardware may include a CD that
contains the software that supports the new hardware. Install this software before you
connect the hardware to the computer. The computer must be restarted after a CD
installation is complete. There are two different types of the computer hardware to be
installed on your desktop computer. They are as follows:
External Hardware
The external hardware of the computer involves all the peripherals that
are connected to the desktop computer externally. The computer hardware is
connected to the computer via various ports. These are USB, serial and parallel
port, firewire, bluetooth, PS/2 and PC card. The external computer hardware
installation can be done by a normal computer user, even without much
knowledge of computers. The hardware is connected to the computer after
switching it off.
Internal Hardware
The internal hardware is a bit complicated and requires some
basic knowledge about the computer internals. If you do not have the
knowledge of the computer internals, it is suggested to get the internal
hardware installed from a professional. The CPU cabinet is opened by
removing the side panels of the cabinet. Identify the slot in which you
have to plug your hardware. Plug in the hardware that is to be installed
and ensure that it has fit properly into its slot. The side panel and the
screws are replaced into their original places and all the wires are
connected to their respective slots. The power cord can then be plugged
into the mains and the computer can be switched on.
The computer software and hardware installation is very easy with
some basic knowledge about computers. If some installation is
complicated you may ask a professional to install or help you with the
software and hardware.

Topic 2: Hardware and Software Maintenance

Hardware Maintenance
Disk Maintenance (Defragmenter)
Run Disk Defragmenter on your PC hard drive periodically
(monthly). Disk fragmentation occurs when files are deleted, software is installed
or removed, internet browser cached information, etc., which leaves the data
scatter over the disk rather then being continuous. This slows down retrieval of
web pages, files and programs. Running a defragmenter realigns data
consecutively on the disk and improves performance.

Computer Cleaning Recommendations

MONITORS AND LCD PANELS - clean with a mild cleaning solution like
Windex and a soft cloth. Lay the LCD panel flat and lightly spray the cleaner so
it does not drip into crevices and affect underlying components.
KEYBOARDS - use a Q-tip to place a drop of cleaning solution on each
key. Extreme care should be exercised so liquid does not dropped between the
keys and onto the underlying keyboard's electronics. Let the solution stand for a
few minutes, longer if the keys are very dirty. Clean with a soft cloth not a paper
towel which can leave "fussies" between the keys. Use a vacuum or
compressed are to remove dust and dirt from between keys.
FANS - the grills should be kept free of dust to allow maximum cooling to
the internal components. Use a vacuum or compressed air to remove debris.
CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CD/DVD COMBO DRIVES AND FLOPPY DISK
DRIVES - obtain commercial disk cleaning devices for these components.
Always handle the media properly, e.g. keep in its case; hold media by the
edges to eliminate finger prints (oil) on the surface; do not subject the media to
extreme heat and cold; etc.

Hardware Maintenance Tips.

Some simple ideas that will help keep your hardware alive and healthy:
 Shutdown, then power off the system before changing any part or plug
(exceptions: serial port devices and Ethernet interfaces)
 Use anti-static mat and/or wrist strap
 Be firm but gentle when seating boards, chips, connectors, etc.
 Keep it clean, especially air filters & ventilation paths
 Leave it powered up all the time (exception: video display)
 Don't drink anything around your machinery
 Put a power surge suppressor on the power line
 Avoid vibrations and shocks (e.g., avoid stacking components)

Software Maintenance
According to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as cited by
Rebecca Mecomber posted on eHow.com, software maintenance is defines as the "process
for managing and executing software maintenance activities". Software maintenance is, in its
most basic sense, the care, support, repair and adaption of software. It is the final stage of the
software creation cycle. According to the Data & Analysis Center for Software, the costs of
software maintenance may consume nearly 80 percent of total life cycle costs.
Correction
When software is found to have stability or security issues, the software creator
corrects them. These are issued as "fixes" or "updates." An example of corrective software
maintenance is the release of an update to correct a security leak in a Web browser.
Adaptation
Software programs need to adapt to changes in the hardware and software
environment. An example of adaptive software maintenance is the release of a new version or
upgrade of software to enable that software to work with a new operating system version.
Perfection
Software creators may issue new releases to improve software performance. An
example of perfective software maintenance is the release of an upgrade that improves the
speed or functionality of the original software.
Prevention
After a software program has been created and issued, inspections are routinely
assigned to search for undeveloped or underlying faults. Corrective measures are taken to
preempt larger problems. An example of preventative software maintenance is the continual
observation of the software by the creator or an independent team of auditors.

Upgrade
Term used to describe updating a software program or adding a new hardware. With
software, an upgrade allows a user to get the latest version of a software program at a
discounted price and not have to purchase the full product. For example, a user running
Microsoft Windows 95 could purchase the Microsoft Windows 98 upgrade for a low price
when compared to the full version of Windows 98. Below are a few reasons and benefits of
upgrading your software products to the latest version.
1. New features not available or found in previous versions.
2. Often, the new version of a program will have better stability and increased
performance.
3. After so long an older software program will be discontinued and often no longer
supported.

Note: Upgrading and updating a software program are two different things. When
upgrading a software program you will almost always have to purchase the upgrade.
However, most updates are small and usually free programs that can be run to update
the program. See our update dictionary definition for additional information on this term.

A hardware upgrade often involves removing an old hardware device and

replacing it with a new hardware device. For example, replacing a 8MB PCI video card
with a 32MB AGP video card would be considered an upgrade. A hardware upgrade
such as a memory upgrade may not require a user to remove the memory from the
computer because of the availability of additional expansion slots. Below is a few
reasons and benefits a user should expect to see when upgrading a hardware device.
1. PERFORMANCE INCREASE. The majority of the hardware upgrades
performed is done to increase the performance of the computer.
2. CAPACITY INCREASE. Users may upgrade or add a new device to increase
the overall capacity of the computer. For example, adding a new hard drive to
allow the computer to store more information; or increase the memory to
increase the ability of what programs can be opened and also at the same time
increase the performance.
3. COMPATIBILITY. A user may upgrade one or more components in their
computer to be able to run or use a software program.
