3. DESCRIPTION
UPM304 is a digital meter able to measure the main electrical parameters on three-phase systems. It
provides accurate measurements even for distorted waveform. Four high brightness LED displays ensure
maximum visibility even in difficult environment lighting condition. The working parameters can be easily
set up by instrument keypad.
UPM304 replaces multiple analog meters as well as single function meters such as voltmeters, ammeters,
wattmeters, varmeters, frequency-meters, powerfactor-meters, energy-meters, etc.

Standard configuration
3-Phase analyser, no. 2 digital outputs.

The basic instrument can be customized with some options to fit to the specific application.
UPM304 is a compact, cost effective meter operating both as a stand-alone device or as part of a more
extensive energy monitoring and management network.

7.1 Serial communication port (optional)

Serial port allows a PC connection. The communication port can be supplied
on request as RS232 or RS485.

7.1.1 RS 232
The RS232 interface allows a point to point connection: i.e.
instrument to PC or other device. The maximum recommended
length for this type of connection is about 5 m. For the connection
use a shielded cable with 3 conductors with a DB9 female connector
or DB25, according to the pictures below. The shield must be
connected to the frame of connector.

Link pins 1 - 4 - 6 Link pins 6 - 8 - 20

5
7.1.2 RS 485
The easiest and cheapest way to connect different measuring devices in a network is the RS485 serial line.
The RS485 standard interface allows a multi-point connection. Between PC and the network, it is required a
Serial RS232 to RS485 Converter. If more than 32 instruments are to be connected, insert a signal repeater.
Each repeater can manage up to 32 instruments. For the connection among the different modules, use a
cable with a twisted pair and a third wire.
The type of connection shown in the following picture uses the third conductor to ensure that all the devices
on the network have the same reference level and improve the reliability of communication.
When there are strong electromagnetic disturbances, which may affect communication, a shielded cable
should be used.
The Rt termination resistance must be installed on the PC and the last instrument connected along the line.
Thanks to these resistances, the reflected signal along the line is reduced.

For a typical telephone pair, Rt can have values from

120 to 150 Ohm.

NOTE. the value of each resistance must not

be lower than 120 Ohm in order to avoid an
overload of line drivers.

The max. recommended distance for a connection is

1200 m at 9600 Baud. For longer distances, lower baud
rates or low-attenuation cables or signal repeaters
are needed.

7.2 FTT-10 LONBUS COMMUNICATION PORT (optional)

The LONBUS interface allows a point to point connection: i.e. instrument to PC or other device. The maximum
recommended node-node length is about 400 m without repeaters. For the connection use a cable UL Level
4, 0.5 mm, 22 AWG twisted pair.

FTT10 LONBUS communication port; connect a single twisted

pair to communicate directly on LonWorksTM network.
Service Pin LONBUS communication switch; to enable the
LonWorksTM communication, press Service Pin with a
sharpened object (e.g. a pencil) paying attention not to
damage the overlay layer of the switch.
Comm. Diagnosis LED LED for diagnosis messages on the communication PIN
status;
LED OFF = communication OK LED
LED is flashing = no communication

6
7.3 RS485 PROFIBUS COMMUNICATION PORT (optional)
The PROFIBUS interface allows a point to point connection: i.e. instrument to PC or other device. For the
connection use a STD cable for PROFIBUS connection with a 9-pole male connector on the device side. If
the standard cable for PROFIBUS is not available, produce one according to the scheme in the picture. Pay
attention that the connectors at the two edges of the cable must comply to the scheme in the picture.

The instrument back side is provided with the PROFIBUS network connector and
two rotary BCD switches, for network address programming.
For the configuration of a device in a PROFIBUS DP network, the following items
RS485
are required:
connector
• Master PROFIBUS DP (e.g. PLC Siemens Simatic S7 300, 400 or PROFIBUS
interface for PC based control, to be plugged into the PC automation
system).
• PROFIBUS network configuration program (it is usually supplied with the Master
PROFIBUS DP)
• Device
LED
• “ALGO0509.GSD” file supplied with the instrument

Before using a DP system, all stations should be given one single address.
The range of addresses that can be given to a PROFIBUS DP node goes from 1 to
99. The instrument back side is equipped with two selectors which can be used Selector 1
to set the node address. (tens)
Selector 2
Example: node 15; with a screwdriver, select 1 on selector 1 and 5 on selector 2.
(unit)

ATTENTION!
When the module, equipped with VPC3+, is operating, it has to be taken into consideration that
a not conform to the standards behaviour might occur, if in a multi-master-system:
• at the same time DP masters class I and II accesses the slave with parametring/configura-
tion data (very low probability)
• other PROFIBUS Layer 2 based masters are involved

7
7.4 ETHERNET COMMUNICATION PORT (optional)
The ETHERNET interface allows a connection between the instrument and an ETHERNET network. For the
connection use an HUB or a Switch. If the instrument is set on STANDARD protocol and it is connected to
the network, all instrument measurements can be displayed remotely on a PC by typing the IP address of
the instrument ETHERNET interface in the web address field.

the digital outputs, be sure that the
instrument is not powered. The power
supply line, the measurement inputs
and any other voltage source must be
disconnected.

7.5.1 Digital outputs connection

For short distance electrical connections use
normal single or multi-polar cables. For longer A) PNP wiring
connections, the signal cables must not lie close
to the power supply wires. If the signal cables and
power supply wires cross, keep a right angle (90°)
to limit the magnetic field. The needed function is
programmed through instrument setup.
Maximum withstandable voltage: 50 VDC
Maximum load current: 100 mA

B) NPN wiring

WARNING!
On request, the unit is supplied with the digital outputs for wiring A (PNP) or B (NPN). Refer
to the label on the back of the meter in order to identify its configuration.

WARNING!
The outputs are not protected against overloads and short-circuits.

NOTE
In case of Rogowski coils, please check that YELLOW cable edge is connected to S1 (signal)
and the WHITE cable edge is connected to S2 (common).

WARNING!
Check that:
1. if the instrument must carry out bi-directional measurements to obtain correct measurements, the
connections must respect the polarities.
2. the connections are made according to the diagrams in the following section, respecting the cyclic order
of phases (important: L1 of the voltage input = L1 of the current input)
3. when voltage or current transformers (PT / CT) are used, in the input and output polarities must be
respected.
4. before disconnecting current input the load power supply is cut off.
If this is not possible, the secondary CT must be short-circuited.

section 8.3.3

8.3.10 Integration time [td]

Integration time (minutes) for demand values calculation.
The demand for power and current is calculated in the programmed period (e.g. 15').
Range of programmable values: 1, 5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 minutes. To set the values, see
section 8.3.3

8.3.11 Digital outputs [do1/do2]

The digital outputs can be programmed as threshold mode on instantaneous values or for energy pulse emission
according to the consumption. The meter allows the proper setting (threshold or pulse) according to the selected
parameters (instantaneous values or energies) automatically. To set the values, see section 8.3.3

NOTE
For the meaning of the abbreviations on the display, refer to the list of parameters at page
17.

How to set the pulse emission mode

The pulse duration is 150 milliseconds fixed. The value may be expressed in Wh, varh,
Vah. The multiplying factor ([ ] none, [k] kilo, [M] mega, [G] giga) and the decimal point
depend on the selected CT value (see section 8.3.4).

Example
Programming: Variable = AcE (active energy); pulse = 1,00; LED = [k];
Digital output : 1kWh / pulse.

For more information, see section 8.3.12 “Considerations on the pulse value calculation”.

15
How to set the threshold mode
In the first page of each output (identified in the first row, with the last digit=1), the
following values can be programmed in the listed order:
• Parameter assigned to the output
• Programmable threshold between 0% and 150% of the selected parameter
fullscale

Fullscale considerations: FSVLL=750V at Pt=0001; FSVLL=150V*Pt at Pt≠0001; FSA=1 or 5A at

Ct=0001; FSA=1 or 5A *Ct at Ct≠0001

Example 1
Parameter=A1; Ct=0001; FSA=1; selected threshold value= 60%
Absolute threshold value= FSA * Ct * 60% = 1 * 1 * 0.6 = 0.6 A
Example 2
Parameter=V1; Pt=0001; FSVLN=433V; selected threshold value=75%
Absolute threshold value= FSVLN * 75% = 433 * 0.75 = 324.75V
Example 3
Parameter=P; FSA=5A; FSVLL=150V*10; Ct=0100; Pt=0010; selected threshold value=45%
Absolute threshold value= (FSA * Ct * FSVLL * √3) * 45% = (5 * 100 * 150 * 10 * 1.73) * 0.45 =
583875 W = 583.8 kW

In the second page of each output (identified in the first row with the last digit=2) the
following values can be programmed in the listed order:
• Delay time: 0.00; 0.03; 0.30; 1.00; 3.00; 10.0; 30.0; 100 seconds
• Programmable hysteresis between 0% and 100%

8.3.12 Considerations on the pulse value calculation

The maximum pulse re-emission rate is 1 pulse/sec (3600 pulse/h).
The minimum value assignable to the pulse to prevent the overlapping is:
emin = Pmax / 3600

Pmax is the maximum power on the measuring point controlled by the meter. The pulse value (emin) is
expressed in Wh, varh or VAh depending on the selected variable (P, Q or S).

Example 1
Pmax = 5MW
emin = 5000000/3600 = 1389 Wh/pulse (1.389 kW/p)

Example 2
Pmax = 800kW
emin = 800000/3600 = 222 Wh/pulse (0.222 kWh/p)

The result can be rounded off to a higher value for an easier calculation or totalization of the energy
consumption.
For example no.1 it is possible to select 1.5, 2 or 10 kWh/p.
For example no.2 it is possible to select 0.5 or 1 kWh/p.
The pulse emission frequency will be proportionally lower.
Higher pulse weight = lower emission frequency.

16
9. CORRECT CONFIGURATION CHECK
If the meter configuration or wiring has not been configured properly, one of the following problems may
occur:

A. The three phases have a negative sign

1. Check the direction of current, indicated by the arrow on each measurement CT: turn the CT by 180°
or reverse the CT connection if necessary (this solution is also recommended for a single-phase
connection)
B. One or two phases have a negative sign
1. Make the checks as per point A.
2. For each phase, make sure that the connections respect the relation between the current phase and
voltage phase. If the voltage-current relation is changed, a fixed 120° (advance or delay) offset is
introduced in the measurement. In such a case the PF should be incorrect, too.
C. The phase or system PF value is incorrect
1. Make the checks as per point B.
D. Inconsistent power values
1. Make the checks as per point B.

10. MAINTENANCE
