Mathematics (Report)

There are four types of transformations, one being reflection. A reflection creates symmetry across a line of reflection. There are different rules for reflecting across the x-axis, y-axis, lines y=x and y=-x, and the origin. Reflecting involves changing the sign of or flipping the coordinates depending on the reflection line. Examples are given reflecting a red triangle across the x-axis, y-axis, and origin to demonstrate applying the reflection rules.

• There are four types of TRANSFORMATIONS

• And reflection transformation is one of those four types

- A Reflection or a flip is a transformation which creates Symmetry on a plane.
- The line across which you reflect a figure is called the Line of Reflection

➢ When you fold along a line of reflection, the original figure overlaps with its Reflection.
➢ Notice that the line of reflection is equidistant from the colored vertices of each triangle.
- In other words, the line of reflection is directly in the middle of the both points.

▪ So, there are Types of Reflection:

▪ And there are rules that you need to follow to do the different types of Reflections.
• The Rule of Reflection about the x-axis, is that you need to multiply the y-coordinate by -1
• The Rule of Reflection about the y-axis, is that you need to multiply the x-coordinate by -1
• The Rule of Reflection about the line y = x axis, is that you only need to flip the coordinates
• The Rule of Reflection about the line y = -x axis, is that you need to flip the coordinates and
change the sign. AND,
• The Rule of Reflection about the Origin,is that you need to multiply both x & y coordinates by -1

(Before Reflection) (After Reflection)

Reflection about the x-axis (x, y) (x, -y)

Reflection about the y-axis (x, y) (-x, y)

Reflection about the line
y = x axis (x, y) (y, x)
Reflection about the line
y = -x axis (x, y) (-y, -x)

Reflection about the origin (x, y) (-x, -y)

1.) So, I will give you an example on how to apply the rule of Reflection about the x-axis
- For example, we have a Red triangle in quadrant 1 and we will reflect this
triangle over the x-axis. Therefore, we will flip this triangle and it will move from
quadrant 1 to Q4.
- So, before that, we need to Find the coordinates. Let say this is point A, B and C
- So, the coordinates of point A are (5,6), point B are (1,1) and point C are (5,1).
- And after that, we are going to multiply the y-coordinate by -1.
- And this is the result,
- Now let’s reflect the Red triangle, the new coordinates of point A, B, and C
- And this is what it looks like.
2.) Another Example; and let’s use the Reflection about the y-axis
- We will use the Red triangle in quadrant 1 to reflect over the y-axis. Therefore,
we will flip this triangle and it will move from quadrant 1 to Q2.
- First step is to find the coordinates (so this are the coordinates of red triangle)
- And then we are going to multiply the x-coordinate by -1.
- And this is the result,
- So, these are the new coordinates of point A, B, and C

3.) Last example using Reflection about the origin

- Again, we will use the coordinates of Red Triangle
- And, then we will multiply both coordinates by -1
- And, this is the result,
- So, these are the new coordinates of point A, B, and C
Reflecting about the origin is equivalent to reflecting it over the x-axis and the y-axis or
Over the y-axis then the x-axis.
