Course Rationale :The rationale for this course is driven by the increasing demand for energy efficiency and sustainability in the
industrial and commercial sectors. Effective energy management can help businesses reduce costs, improve operational efficiency,
and minimize environmental impact. The use of SCADA systems allows for real-time monitoring and control of energy
consumption, making it easier to identify areas for improvement and optimize energy usage.
Course Objectives :The course provides an introduction to the role of Computers and Communication inElectrical Power
Engineering. Energy Management Systems (EMS) and Supervisory Control and DataAcquisition (SCADA) are strongly linked
and associated with each other. EMS deals with the computeroperation, optimization and control of power systems. Power System
operation, optimization ad control, which are the studies carried in an EMS are presented in detail. SCADA deals with the
communicationprotocols and control of power systems using EMS. Open Systems, protocols for power system protectionand
relaying under IEC6180 will also be covered in this course. This course provides an introductory coursematerial for power system
automation and recent advances in technological aspects of computers andcommunications in networking.
