Foundation Recce LocationScripts 2024

The document provides instructions for a location scouting challenge to find suitable places to shoot scenes from three silent film scripts. Students are asked to take still photos of potential locations, and present their findings and proposed shot lists to the director in a document. The document provides notes on two potential areas to scout - the "old town" near the church by the school, and the "new town" in the opposite direction. It also provides contact information for any issues.

Learning to Recce: Wed 24th Jan

The Challenge:
Go out individually and find locations that would be suitable for the following scripts. You can choose any
of the scripts.

Using stills to shoot what you find, please place them into a document which you will present to Stuart to-
morrow afternoon. Use whatever software you are familiar with. The aim of the document is to convince
your Director that these are good places to shoot the scene, and also present ideas about how the scene could
be shot. If you have any technical issues you can request assistance from your fellow students, but please do
not collaborate on the presentation itself. However, if you require someone to be in your shots to represent
actors, you can ask your fellow students to do this. You also need to recommend a rough schedule as to what
times of day the scenes should be shot.

Note: Your document should be in two distinct parts.

• Part 1 is a location survey showing why you think the location works for the film and a general idea of
where you visualise the shoot taking place, as well as any practical notes you think are relevant.
• Part 2 is a rough shot list, which can be hand drawn or use your colleagues for a photo shot list.

Note: These are scenes from a silent movie..

Script 1 - Genre - Drama

DAY EXT CHURCH

A funeral procession has drawn up outside the church. Whilst everyone is going in, an inappropriately
dressed young lady (Tilda) is hanging back - she wants to go in, but does not want others to see her.

DAY INT CHURCH

The ceremony is underway, hymns are being sung. Tilda is in the back row, unable to join in as she doesn’t
know the hymns. No-one has noticed her, but she paying particular attention to a man who is near the front.
JOHN has family with him: two teenage children but it is his wife’s funeral.
TILDA goes back out of the door.

DAY EXT CHURCH

People are coming out and going to their cars. JOHN sees TILDA near the pavement staring at him. He is
dealing with a lot of condolences, but can’t help looking back at her. Suddenly she is not there anymore. He
hesitates, but breaks away and runs to the street. The family is mystified.

DAY EXT STREET

TILDA is waiting in a small car with the passenger door open. JOHN jumps in and they drive off. As they
pass the entrance to the church where the mourners are gathered, John waves goodbye.

Script 2 - Genre - Thriller

DAY EXT COFFEE SHOP

A man and a woman are talking intently in the window of a coffee shop. It is plain that the discussion is
heated, but the relationship is quite intimate. This is being observed by a man who looks like a character
from an old b/w thriller for the 50’s (ref: Touch of Evil 1958). The woman suddenly gets up and leaves the
shop.

She walks past Orson (our corrupt cop) and away down the street. He follows her at a distance. Meanwhile,
unknown to him, the man in the shop comes out and follows Orson.

The woman turns a corner out of sight. Orson hurries and goes round the corner, but she has disappeared.
As he turns back, the man appears at the head of the alleyway. He pulls out a gun and shoots him. Poor Or-
son - he’s been conned.

Script 3 - Genre - Drama/Horror

DAY EXT STREET

A young couple are walking hand in hand down the street. They don’t have a care in the world. As they
pass the shop windows, she checks herself out all the time to see how she looks. He is buried in his phone,
apparently irritated by the text he is receiving.

Jane pauses at a particular window full of fashionable clothes. She lets go of Roger’s hand and he pauses -
still staring at his phone. Suddenly two men and a woman quietly walk up to her whilst she is looking at the
clothes, or admiring herself in the window (who knows?). One man puts his hand around her mouth to stop
her screaming and they lift her up and take her into the shop.

As they do this, the woman - who is mysteriously dressed the same as Jane & looks like her twin - walks
back to the man, takes his hand and they walk away up the street. Roger does not notice as he is still en-
gaged with his phone.

As they walk away, we pan back to look inside the shop window and Jane has become a mannequin in the
shop window, frozen and lifeless.

NOTES;
The Church is turn left outside the school and walk to the end - you will see the church on the other side of
the roundabout.
This part of town is called the “old town” and the shops and buildings are more traditional and older. There
is a cafe we use a lot if you keep walking straight after the roundabout on the left hand side.

If you want to shoot in the “new town” turn right outside the school and walk for about 10 minutes: there are
several cafe’s and a Costa. Have your student ID with you in case anyone asks you what you are doing..
