Practice 2: The graph below gives information about international tourist arrivals in five different
parts of the world.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons
where relevant.

International = foreign

Tourist = visitor = traveler = holiday maker

Different = various

Part = area = region = place = destination

Attractive, popular  the most/least attractive place

Introduction:

The graph shows/ indicates/ illustrates/ depicts + the number of/ the percentage of/ the proportion of/
the amount of + N + Ving/ Ved + Place + Time.

The graph shows the number of foreign visitors coming to five different areas of the world over the
period of 15 years since 1990.
Overall/ In general, it can be seen that the international tourist arrivals in five regions increased from
1990 to 2005. Especially, North America and Central and Eastern Europe were the most popular
destinations.

Overall, all five places witnessed growth in international travel over the period and it seems that North
America and Central and Eastern Europe attracted more travelers than other areas.

Body:

In 1990, the number of visitors to North America was 70 million people, more than twice as many as
that to the second most popular destination, Central and Eastern Europe. After rising steadily and
peaking at 91 million, tourist arrivals to North American decreased slightly by around 1 million in the last
five years. The number of tourists going to Central and Eastern Europe, on the other hand, doubled to
60 million in the first five years and increased further, catching up with North America at approximately
90 million in 2005.

Over 20 million tourists visited South-East Asia in 1990. The number had risen gradually to nearly 50
million visitors by 2005.

Sub-Saharan Africa and South America were two regions with fewest visitor numbers in 1990 (just about
10 million each). However, from 1995 to 2005, Sub-Saharan Africa was more visited than South America,
attracting over 20 million and 18 million tourists respectively in 2005.
