Frankenstein Quotes and Analysis 16-20
1) “The mildness of my nature had fled, and all within me was turned to gall and bitterness.
The nearer I approached your habitation, the more deeply did I feel the spirit of revenge
rekindled in my heart.”
The speaker of the quote is the Creature towards Victor. The quote represents the
characterization of the Creature thus far in the novel. When we first heard from the Creature he
mentions he was attacked by villagers but he did not fight back, and when the De Lacey family
attacked him as well he did not fight back either. However, after the family flees, he burns their
house down. As the story progresses the Creature is filled with rage and revenge; those feelings
become his sole function and emotion. He proceeds to act on those feelings of vengeance by
killing the people close to Victor, forcing him to feel the isolation the Creature himself has.
(Innocence to experience)
2) “Unfeeling, heartless creator. You had endowed me with perceptions and passions and
then cast me abroad an object for scorn and horror of mankind.”
The significance of this quote is in the Creature's resentment towards his creator, Frankenstein.
The Creature is expressing his deep sense of abandonment and betrayal. He is essentially
blaming Frankenstein for giving him life and then rejecting him, which leads to the Creature's
isolation and suffering. This quote also underscores the theme of the moral and ethical
dilemmas raised by creating life, which are central to the novel.
3) “Oh! Stars and clouds and winds, ye are all about to mock me; if ye really pity me, crush
sensation and memory; let me become as a nought; but if not; depart, depart, and leave
me in darkness.’
The speaker of the quote is Victor Frankenstein towards nature. The quote represents the
theme of romanticism relating to nature. The idea in romanticism is that nature has a healing
effect on people. Victor takes this idea to advantage and when he is downhearted he ventures
out into nature in the hopes he can let his feelings out and return home feeling uplifted. In this
scene he is directly asking nature to relieve him of his sensations and bad memories, to let him
become nothing, he also says if you will not help me then go away and leave me here in
darkness.
4) “Alas, to me the idea of an immediate union with my Elizabeth was one of horror and
dismay.”
The speaker of the quote is Victor Frankenstein thinking to himself. His father suggested to him
a marriage between Elizabeth and himself, and Victor takes the time to think it through before
answering. After a moment of thinking he comes to the realization that it would be a terrible idea
for him and Elizabeth to be together, remembering what the Creature said to him prior. The
Creature tells Frankenstein he will be with him on his wedding day, foreshadowing that he's still
enacting vengeance and killing the people around him and the next victim will be Elizabeth. The
quote furthers this foreshadowing because Victor realizes the marriage will truly be a bad idea
and believes the Creature sincerely will live up to what he said and come to harm Elizabeth.
5) “Yet one of those first results of the sympathies for which the daemon thirsted would be
children, and a race of devils would be propagated on this earth.
The speaker of the quote is Victor Frankenstein thinking to himself. The theme this quote
correlates with isolation and family. Since the Creature was made the only person in his life was
his creator who is Frankenstein, but Frankenstein abandoned him and left the Creature alone
with no one. The Creature experiences intense feelings of isolation and loneliness, this causes
him to hunt down Frankenstein in the hopes Victor will make him a mate that is similar to
himself. Frankenstein first sympathizes with the Creature and agrees to his request, but comes
to the realization that since the Creature is lonely the first thing he will do is create children. A
new race can be problematic to the human race as they do not have the same physical features
and humans will not accept them as their own.
