SOLVED WORKSHEET
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Give one example where force changes the shape of an object.

Ans: When we apply force on a rubber band to stretch it, the force changes its shape.

2. When a plastic pen is rubbed on dry hair, it attracts tiny pieces of paper. Which
force is involved in this process?
Ans: Electrostatic force.

3. What is force? State the various effects of force.

Ans: A force is a push or pull on an object resulting from the object's interaction with
another object. A force can produce the following effects:
● A force can move a stationary object.
● A force can stop a moving object.
● A force can change the speed of a moving object.
● A force can change the direction of a moving object.
● A force can change the shape and size of an object.

4. Why does the shape of an ointment tube change when we squeeze it?
Ans: This is due to the force applied on it using our fingers. In this case the agents are the
fingers of the person squeezing the tube and object is the tube. Effect of the force changes
the shape as the ointment comes out of the tube.

5. Which of the following are non-contact forces?

Magnetic force, Frictional force, Gravitational force, Muscular force, Electrostatic
force. Ans: Magnetic force, Gravitational force, Electrostatic force

6. Give two examples from everyday life which show that air exerts
pressure. Ans: i) If we blow a balloon, it will expand because of air pressure.
ii) When air is sucked out of a drinking straw, the air pressure inside it decreases and the
atmospheric pressure outside, forces the liquid to go inside the straw.
7. Why do mountaineers usually suffer from nose bleeding at high altitudes?
Ans: Air pressure goes on decreasing as we go high up. So, at high altitudes, the
atmospheric pressure becomes less than the pressure exerted by the blood inside the body.
This causes some of the blood vessels to burst resulting in nose bleeding.

8. Describe one activity to show the existence of atmospheric pressure.

Ans : When a can filled with hot water is closed and is cooled down rapidly by pouring
cold water on it, it will shrink instantly. This experiment proves that there is a huge
atmospheric pressure that is exerted on everything on the surface of the earth.

9. Calculate the pressure when a force of 200N is exerted on an area of a) 10 m²

b) 5 m² Ans: a.) Force = 200 N Area =
10 m²
Pressure = Force / Area=200/10= 20 Pa
b) Force = 200 N Area = 5 m²
Pressure = Force / Area=200/5= 40
Pa

10. Name the type of forces involved in the following:

a. A horse pulling a cart – Muscular force

b. A sticker attached to steel Almirah without glue- Magnetic force.
c. A plastic comb rubbed in dry hair picking up tiny pieces of paper - Electrostatic force.
d. A moving boat coming to rest when rowing is stopped - Frictional force.

11. Why does a sharp knife cut objects more effectively than a blunt knife?
Ans: The pressure exerted by a sharp knife edge is more than that exerted by a blunt one
because the area on which force is exerted with a sharp knife is very small. So when the
area of contact decreases, then the pressure applied on it increases. Thus, it is easier to cut
with a sharp knife than a blunt knife.

12. Explain why porters place a thick round piece of cloth on their heads when they
have to carry heavy loads.
Ans: Porters place a thick, round piece of cloth on their head when they carry heavy
loads to increase the area of contact of the load with their head. So when the area of
contact increases, then the pressure applied on it decreases. Since the load now falls on a
larger area of head, the pressure on the head is reduced and it becomes easier to carry the
heavy load.
13. Define pressure. What is the relation between pressure, force and area? State the
unit in which pressure is measured.
Ans: The force acting on per unit area of a surface is called pressure. Its unit is Pascal or
N/m2
The pressure is directly proportional to force applied on area of contact. So when the
force applied on the area of contact increases, then the pressure applied on it also
increases. But the pressure is inversely proportional to area of contact. So when the area
of contact increases, then the pressure applied on it decreases. This relation can be
expressed as Pressure= Force /Area.

14. What is meant by atmospheric pressure? What is the cause of atmospheric

pressure? Why are our bodies not crushed by the large pressure exerted by the
atmosphere?
Ans: The pressure exerted by air around us is known as atmospheric pressure.
Atmospheric pressure is due to the weight of air present in the atmosphere which is
caused by the gravitational pull.
Our bodies are not crushed under the atmospheric pressure because the pressure exerted
by the blood balances the air pressure outside the body.
