CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND THE BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

INTRODUCTION

Working while studying in shs can be rewarding and exhausting. A lot of

students are doing this because of their specific reasons and the common

reason why they are working and studying at the same time is poor financial

support given by their parents that's why they need to balance everything

especially their time to provide their needs, in that way they can help themselves

and also they will be able to help their parents by decreasing their expenses at

home.

Watts and Pickering (2000) suggested that skills learned at the job are

transferable, and students who have a job are more employable due to their

development of organizational and time management skills. (watts and pickering

2000) This study focuses on the effects of working while studying in senior high

school, because we want to know and also all of the person who will read this

the struggles and hard work of the senior high school students. we will be able to

determine how family, time management, class activities, and academic

achievements affect the working students.

Working students are dissatisfied with the amount of time they are able to

dedicate to studying; between 30% and 60% of the students surveyed in the

2018 Eurostudent study indicated they are dissatisfied with the amount of time
they have for studies. Employed students feel pressured and experience a sense

of being pulled in two directions (Watts and Pickering 2000).

The purpose of this study is to make a call for those students who are able to

go to school without worrying about their everyday needs and have parents that

can afford everything they need, this will make them realize how lucky they are

for having a good life and to be thankful. Also, for the students who are doing

their best to strive for their dreams, especially our working students, we want

them to know that they are inspiring everybody and to make them proud of

themselves because despite all the challenges and obstacles they are facing

everyday they still keep striving and never losing hope to achieve their dreams.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study intended to find out the Effects of being a Working SHS Students of

Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges in Their Academic Performance in Year

2023-2024:

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questionnaire

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of being a working student?

2. How does working shs students manage their time?

3. What is the main reason why so many students decided to work while
studying?
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study is limited only to the effects of being a working SHS students of

Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges in their academic performance during the

academic year 2023-2024 Working while studying can pose significant time

management challenges for SHS students. Balancing work responsibilities with

academic commitments can lead to limited time for studying, completing

assignments, and participating in extracurricular activities. This may result in

decreased academic performance if students are unable to allocate sufficient

time for their studies.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study may have practical implications by offering solutions,

recommendations, or strategies to address a specific problem or challenge. It

may help practitioners, policymakers, or professionals make informed decisions

and improve their practices.

Working as a student can lead to time management difficulties, as it requires

balancing job shifts, commuting, and schoolwork. This can result in increased

stress and fatigue, as students may become weary and struggle to focus,

affecting their academic performance.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Working while studying means having a part-time job and having an

extra income. Working while a student commonly encounters problems

and stress about their work and studies as well working while studying

could have a negative and positive impact on the students' performance.

The review of related literature for this study focuses on working

while studying in Senior High School at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial

Colleges. This study seeks to explore the struggles and difficulties of

students who study and, at the same time work on-campus. Their

self-esteem, academic performance, and time management are also

considered, whether these factors are affected by their status as

on-campus working students.

Kavarana (2013) found that working students increased due to a desire to

minimize debts and earn more tuition. This approach promotes self-achievement

and satisfaction by challenging oneself with a double workload and different

lifestyles. Alli (2010) emphasized that a combination of working and studying is

key to success and future career. The effects of working during senior high

school vary by job type and location, with harmful effects such as lower grades
and less attractive opportunities. Working can lead to senior high school dropouts

or delayed graduation, but it can also be a positive experience for students.

On-campus jobs can provide experience in the classroom and the labor market,

and can build connections with academic departments and the community.

Part-time employment is often seen as a necessity in higher education, as it

helps students develop personal and career skills. Higher education institutions

should identify opportunities to increase students' familiarity with works and

expose them to educational, part-time vocational, and career experiences.

According to the Comission on Higher Education (CHED), around 216,000

students in the Philippines are misrepresenting school and work, accounting for

8% of the total number of college students. Working students are mostly in food

service, entertainment, and sales, with financial crises forcing them to work

independently. Only half of these students finish college due to challenges like

adaptability, poor health, and financial problems.

Lederman (2009) stated that working while studying could have positive

effect on one thing and negative effect on other thing. Employed students tend to

have better time management skills, independence, and responsibility. However,

a study found that the more time students spend working, the less they achieve

good academic performance. Additionally, students who work full-time while

studying are less likely to complete their programs. Despite these benefits, some
researchers also highlight that time constraints can negatively impact students'

academic performance. Studies shows that students working between 30+39

hours per week and those working 40+ hours per week feel their employment

negatively affects their academic achievement. However, those working between

1 and 15 hours per week shows slightly higher GPAs. Pike in Lederman (2009)

found that various amounts of on and off-campus work directly and indirectly

affect student's self-reported grades and engagement in academic activities.

Students working 20 hours or less on-campus report higher engagement levels,

while those working 20 hours or more are more engaged. Research shows that

low stress levels can be beneficial for some but can negatively impact students'

self-concepts. The effects of working depend on individual student differences,

with a healthy stress level promoting positive actions and experiences. Excessive

stress can be detrimental to health. The impact of student employment on

educational attainment is crucial, as it indirectly affects later life outcomes such

as labor market success, wealth, and happiness. Policymakers should consider

this impact when deciding encourage student employment. Students often work

while studying to support their families, overcome unemployment, death, and

health concerns, and prove that poverty is not predicament in education.

Solutions include promoting collaboration between parents and teachers to

motivate students and manage time constraints.
