Complex Numbers

IIT-JEE
Definition: If number is in 𝑥 + 𝑖𝑦 form then is called complex numbers and denoted by “z”.
𝑧 = 𝑥 + 𝑖𝑦, where 𝑥, 𝑦 ∈ R (Real numbers)
𝑖 = iota = −1

𝑖 = −1 = 𝑖 5
𝑖 2 = −1 = 𝑖 6
𝑖 3 = −𝑖 = 𝑖 7
𝑖4 = 1 = 𝑖8
i.e. 𝑖 4𝑚 = 1
𝑖 4𝑚 +1 = 𝑖
𝑖 4𝑚 +2 = −1
𝑖 4𝑚 +3 = −𝑖

Ex- Find value:-

1. 𝑖 101 , 𝑖 503 , 𝑖 74 , 𝑖 36
∙ 𝑖 101 = 𝑖 4×25+1 = 𝑖 ∙ 𝑖 503 = 𝑖 4×125 +3 = −𝑖 ∙ 𝑖 74 = 𝑖 4×18+2 = −1 ∙ 𝑖 36 = 𝑖 4×9 = 1

2. 1 + 𝑖 10 + 𝑖 100 − 𝑖 1000
= 1 + 𝑖2 + 1 − 1
=1−1=0

3. 6𝑖 50 + 5𝑖 41 − 2𝑖 19 + 6𝑖 60
= 6𝑖 2 + 5𝑖 − 2 −𝑖 + 6 × 1
= −6 + 5𝑖 + 2 + 6 = 2 + 5𝑖

4. 1 + 𝑖 2 + 𝑖 4 − 𝑖 6
= 1−1+1−1 = 0

5. 𝑖 108 + 𝑖 117 − 𝑖 110 + 𝑖 115

= 1 + 𝑖 + 𝑖 2 + −𝑖
= 1+𝑖−1−𝑖 = 0

6. 2𝑖 2 + 6𝑖 3 + 3𝑖 16 − 6𝑖 19 + 4𝑖 21
= −2 − 6𝑖 + 3 + 6𝑖 + 4𝑖 = 1 + 4𝑖
