This document describes an experiment to determine the volume of a solid sphere and hollow cylinder using a Vernier caliper. It explains how to use the Vernier caliper to measure the diameter of the sphere and inner diameter and length of the cylinder. The document provides formulas to calculate the radius, volume of the sphere, and volume of the cylinder from the measurements. Observations and calculations are shown in tables.

Bring the two aws of Vernier callipers in contact. bserve and conclude according to the
following given conditions.

Position of main Scale bser ation Conclusion

If ero division of the There is no

a main scale coincides ero error
with ero division of
Vernier scale

If ero division of ero error

the Vernier scale is m x .C.
b on right side of ero rom g b ,
division of main div
scale and if mth 0.0 cm.
division of Vernier
scale coincides with
same division of
main scale.

If ero division of ero error

Vernier scale is on - N-m x .C.
c left side of ero rom g c ,
division of main - div
scale and if mth -0.0 cm.
division of Verni-
er scale coincides
with same division
on main scale.

So, ero error ..cm.

II. To determine olume of s here

1. Hold the given solid sphere between the lower aws of Vernier callipers. as shown in g 1 .
. Note the position of ero mark of Vernier scale on the main scale. et the reading be A .
. Note the Vernier division B that coincides with some division on the main scale.
4. Then calculate the total reading T with formula T A B .C.
. Take at least three independent reading for di erent positions of sphere.
. Apply correction according to ero error T and nd the mean value of diameter D and

calculate radius of sphere r .

Precautions
1. Hold the ob ect tightly between the aws do not press the aws too hard.
. Take observations for diameter at di erent positions of the ob ect.
. ye should be exactly perpendicular to the Vernier scale while observing reading.
dditional x eriment ou can do
Procedure Take a small mug or cylindrical glass having thick bottom. Measure its inner
diameter by using upper ends of the aws. Measure depth by using depth measurement strip.
Hence, calculate capacity inner volume of the mug or glass.
