1. Application

Diverter is mainly used to control well liquid when surface layer well bore drilling is
carried. The diverter is used with the supporting use of control system, spool, and
valve etc. At this time, the fluid or air controlled in the low pressure well is
transferred to the safe place according to the required line by using diverter to
ensure the drill operators and equipments safe. It can seal all kinds of shapes and
dimensions Kelly bar, drill pipe, joints, collars and casing pipes. And at the same
choke well liquid bypass.

4. Working Principle
When there is well kick or the shallow gas needs branch flow, open the ball valve of
spool side outlet. Open the hydraulic control system, the high pressure oil from control
system goes from body oil port to bottom piston close chamber and push the piston
move upward and make the packing unit moves centripetally, the support rod approach
each other and push the rubber to the well center and realize sealing drill tools. At the
same time, well liquid from spool side outlet ball valve to outer well bottom wind port
safety place through blowout pipe. Drain off the hydraulic pressure when opening,
screw off the air hole plug on the body, and at the same time open the three-way side
outlet manual ball valve at the body oil port. Speed up the hydraulic oil in the diverter,
piston drop by its weight, packing unit under the action of elastic reset itself and open
the wellhead.

5. Structural Features
Please see Figure 1.

5.1. Simple and Dependable Structure

The diverter is composed of body, upper housing, piston and packing unit. The
quantity of parts is small and makes the diverter more dependable and easy to maintain,
the upper housing and body is claw connected, and it’s easy to dismount on site.

There is hydraulic oil line joint which control the piston switch on the diverter, and
there is a three-way spool to speed up the back-flow speed in the closing chamber.

5.2. Lip type seal ring structure

All dynamic seals are lip type, sealing reliable and have a long life.
5.2.1 Double U combination seal ring and U ring is used between outer piston
and body, seal oil cylinder and well liquid separately.
5.2.2 U ring is used between inner piston and support cylinder, seal oil cylinder
and well liquid.

5.3. Suitable for H2S service

Diverters suitable for H2S service can be provided according to NACE MR- 0175
regulation requirements.

5.4. Tapered rubber

5.4.1 This kind of rubber is tapered type and it is made of supporting ribs and vulcanized
rubber. The rib is made of alloy steel.
5.4.2 Turn over of the rubber is limited. When a hole is closed, the well pressure forces
the rubber turn over, but the steel segment can resist the turn over, causing the rubber
being at safe status. So it can stand high pressure without damage.

6. Installation and Operation

6.1. Installation on the wellhead

6.1.1 Following systems are required at well site to assemble and use the diverter.
6.1.1.1 Hydraulic control system
6.1.1.2 Spool and ball valve
6.1.1.3 A control line to the diverter close port and ball valve.
6.1.2 Before assembling the diverter, check the following items:
6.1.2.1 Check if the sealing gasket groove of wellhead flange and diverter flange is
well, inspect the flange surface, protruding point is not allowed.
6.1.2.2 The diverter is whether qualified after the pressure test.
6.1.3 Assemble the diverter, tighten the connection bolt on the opposite angles equally,
the tighten torque is 3654 N·m (2695 ft• lb)

6.2. Proper Application

6.2.1 After installation at well site, the diverter should be pressure tested according
to rated standards. When conducting the pressure test, pay attention to the testing drill
pipe is fixed with the testing device. Don’t let the drill pipe hang on the bottom of the
rubber directly, make the rubber support the upward force. Tighten the connection bolt
again, overcome the uneven tightness.

6.2.2 Check the well sealing situation according to the well control operation
procedure by opening and closing the diverter regularly. If all the iron cores that
supporting the rubber are closing to each other totally or any other problems, replace
the rubber or solve the problems.

6.2.3 When a blowout happens or happens with shallow air layer, open the spool
outlet ball valve, and close the diverter and make the well liquid flow out through blow
pipes. The diverter cannot be used to shut off the well.

6.2.4 Do not release well pressure by opening diverter to avoid rubber damage.

6.2.5 Every time the diverter is opened, it must be checked if the BOP is opened

completely to avoid rubber damage.

6.2.6 Appropriate hydraulic oil must be used to open and close the diverter and
keep clean.

6.2.7 Recommended maximum control pressure of sealing the pipe is 12MPa. But
during the test and closing, use as low the control pressure as possible when closing to
prolong the rubber service life.

6.2.8 During test and use, measure the piston route through the small hole on the
upper housing. Measure uses a slender rod and a steel ruler. After piston closed,
measure A value, it’s often larger than 132mm; when it’s approach or equal to 132mm, it
indicates that the piston route is the largest, the piston cannot move upward, at the
same time, it means element life is in termination, the new element should be replaced.

6.2.9 Clean the dirty and water after using or testing the BOP and before storing.

6.3. Diverter sealing test

The testing media shall be clean water or drilling fluid. During the pressure test the
timing shall be started after the pressure has been stabilized.

6.3.1 Sealing test of the pipe ram

Testing procedure:

A. Install the diverter on the seat of the testing stump and connect the hydraulic
control pipe lines to the diverter oil line.

B. Install the testing pipe ram in the diverter and ensure that the mandrel is reliably
connected to diverter and prevent it from breaking off during the test;

C. Close the rubber core at 1200-1500psi hydraulic control operating pressure.

D. Improve the well pressure to 200-300psi, maintaining for 10min. Check the
leakage condition, it’s qualified when there is no leakage at sealing positions.

E. Improve the well pressure to the diverter maximum rated working pressure
3.5MPa; maintaining for 10min, check the leakage again, it’s qualified when there is no
leakage at sealing positions.

F. Reduce the well pressure to zero.

G. Drain off the hydraulic pressure of close chamber, screw off the plug on the outer
ring of body, the rubber core reset on its own elastic and piston reset on its own weight,
check the wear and sealing element condition of diverter rubber core, and record it.

6.3.2 Hydraulic pressure control system test


The rated working pressure for diverter hydraulic control system is 12MPa (1714psi).
The medium of test is hydraulic oil.

A. Test the close chamber, the testing pressure is 12MPa, maintaining for 10min,
check the leakage position, it’s qualified when there is no leakage at the sealing parts.

B. Reduce the hydraulic pressure to zero.

7. Maintenance
Diverter shall be cleared completely after every testing at site. Replace damaged parts
in time. Naked to the air or no painting and processing coordinate surfaces that contact
the drilling fluid should paint with synthetic complex aluminum base grease, paint
molybdenum disulphide oil thread on the connecting thread position.

7.1. Disassembly (See Figure 1)

7.1.1 Remove the plug or the pipe lines of body oil lines.
7.1.2 Remove the bolt (10), and carry the block out with steel bar.
7.1.3 Lift the upper housing steadily.
7.1.4 Screw the lifting screw on the tapered rubber and lift out the rubber.
7.1.5 Screw the lifting screw on the piston and lift out the piston steadily.
7.1.6 Screw off the connecting bolts of support sleeve and body, lift out the support
sleeve.
7.1.7 Disassemble the seal ring.

7.2. Check points and repair after disassembling

7.2.1 Check the sealing surfaces of body, piston and upper housing: when longitudinal
tensile scratches are appeared on the sealing surfaces, even change new sealing rings
will not prevent leaking oil, find the reason of scratch and repair it. If the scratch is in
threadiness or in punctiform, repair it with very fine sand paper.
7.2.2 Sealing parts: check if there is wearing condition of the lip of labiate sealing rings.
Check if there is extrusion or cut wound in the O ring. Check if there is glue falling or
craze in the spherical rubber. When there is damage or scratch on the sealing parts,
replace them.
7.2.3 Check the thread in any part, if there is thread damage or serious corrosion, repair
or change them.

7.3. Assembling

7.3.1 If there is any damage or scratch in the parts, repair or change them.

7.3.2 Lubricate the body inner surface with machine oil, and paint with grease on the

piston, support sleeve, upper housing, packing unit and blocks.

7.3.3 Assemble the sealing parts.

7.3.4 Put the support sleeve into the body and screw the connecting bolts.

7.3.5 Put the piston in the body smoothly.

7.3.6 Put in the rubber element, paint complex aluminum-based grease or drill pipe seal

grease on the rubber element.

7.3.7 Assemble the upper housing, paint complex aluminum-based grease or drill pipe

seal grease on the inner surface of upper housing.

7.3.8 Put the blocks in the ring groove of the body and fix with bolts.

7.3.9 Plug the pass in and out oil port with plugs. (Prevent enter into the other things)

8. Proper Storage of Rubber Parts


The storage condition has big influence on the rubber parts life; all rubber parts must be
stored as following:

8.1. They must be stored in a relatively dark and dry room. The temperature shall
be maintained between 15 to 25ºC and the humidity shall not exceed 80%. Avoid
placing them near heating facilities and avoid direct sun lights.

8.2 No corrosive materials shall be spilled onto the rubber elements.

8.3 The rubber elements shall be placed far away from high voltage electrical
equipment because such equipment can generate ozone.

8.4 The rubber elements shall be stored loosely laid and they shall not be bent,
extruded or hanged.

8.5 They shall be inspected regularly and they shall not be used when they become

crisp or bent or if chaps or cracks are observed.

8.6 Generally the storage period is 2 years.

9. Troubles and Settlements

9.1 The leakage of diverter sealing well pressure

If the seal element can not be closed well, it can be settled by opening and closing
diverter several times.

If the rubber is over worn or damaged, it should be changed in time. But if it still
can’t be closed to position, the rubber should be changed.

If a diverter has opened for a long time, some foreign matter may be settled on the
rubber. In this situation, the rubber should be cleaned and moved.

9.2 The diverter can not be opened after closed.

This is because the diverter has closed for a long time, the rubber has deformed
permanently, or there would be some cement under the rubber. In this situation, the
rubber must be cleaned or changed.

9.3 The diverter can not be opened and closed flexibly.

There is leakage in the oil pipes. The diverter has not operated for a long time, or it
is plugged by some foreign matter. Above situations will affect flexibility of the switches.
So the diverter must be operated according to the operation procedure. All the pipes
should be blown with pressure air before connected. All connectors should be cleaned.

10. Ordering

When ordering a diverter, please refer to following:

1) Bore size and working pressure.

2) Sealing element is spherical or tapered.

3) Connections type. Bottom connection size, working pressure and gasket groove
size. Top connection size, working pressure and gasket groove size.

4) Working temperature range.

5) If gasket groove needs to be build-up welded with stainless steel.

6) Hydrogen sulfide resistance.

7) Spare parts not including the spare parts provided with the BOP.

8) Other special requirements when install and use diverter.

9) When ordering, supply description, part number and quality of parts refer to List
2 or List 3.
