WE ARE LEARNING TO:

• A. CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER
• (I) BASED ON WORK
• (II) BASED ON SIZE AND PERFORMANCE
• (III) BASED ON PURPOSE
CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER
(BASED ON WORK)

This classification is based on how they work.

They are:-
• Analog computer
• Digital computer
• Hybrid computer
CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER
ANALOG COMPUTER:
This is not a very common computer. It works by
measuring data. It is required for calculating
physical phenomenal changes. They are used by
scientist and engineers. They work on continuous
variables like waves of the signal, their amplitude,
etc
CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER

DIGITAL COMPUTERS:-
It operates on data, including magnitudes, letters,
and symbols, that are expressed in binary code—
i.e., using only the two digits 0 and 1. Most
computers are digital computers.
CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER
HYBRID COMPUTERS:-
Traditionally, the analog components of the computer handle
complex mathematical computations. The digital
components take care of logical and numerical operations, in
addition to serving as the controller for the system. They
work like both analog and digital computers. They work by
measuring and also by counting data. It is the type used for
space explorations, controlling air traffic. It is also used in
defence.
CLASSIFICATON OF COMPUTER BASED ON SIZE AND
PERFORMANCE.
• SUPER COMPUTER:-

This is the biggest, most powerful and the fastest computer. It is as big as room. A
supercomputer is used in weather forecasting, nuclear power stations, research laboratories and
animation movies. It is used for processing highly critical data and immense amount of
mathematical calculations. PARAM is a series of Super Computer designed and Assembled by
Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune, India. The latest
machine in the series is the PARAM Ananta.

Supercomputer “Eka” which was developed by the TATA Group, Pune (India) in

November 2007

USA’s Frontier is currently the fastest and the most powerful supercomputer in the world.
It has surpassed Japan’s Fugaku as the world’s most powerful supercomputer right now..
CLASSIFICATON OF COMPUTER BASED ON
TO SIZE AND PERFORMANCE.
• MAINFRAME COMPUTER:
This is a large computer with a huge storage capacity. It is used in
large business or in government organization to perform complex
tasks. It undertakes bulk data processing such as census report,
industry and consumer statistics, enterprise resource planning,
and transaction processing. It is also known as ―BIG IRON‖.
They are mostly used for scientific research purposes.
It is having high reliability and security.
Eg.- Most eminent vendors of Mainframe computers are IBM,
Hitachi, Amdahl and Unisys.
CLASSIFICATON OF COMPUTER BASED ON
TO SIZE AND PERFORMANCE.
• MINI COMPUTER:-
IT IS A MULTIUSER COMPUTER CAPABLE OF
SUPPORTING UP TO HUNDREDS OF USERS
SIMULTANEOUSLY. THEY ARE USUALLY MORE
POWERFUL COMPARED TO MICROCOMPUTERS.
MINICOMPUTERS ARE ALSO KNOWN AS MID
RANGE COMPUTERS AS THEIR COST AND
COMPUTING POWERS LIE IN THE MIDDLE RANGE
BETWEEN MICRO AND MAINFRAME COMPUTERS.
MINICOMPUTERS ARE USED FOR MULTIUSERS AND
INTERACTIVE APPLICATIONS.
CLASSIFICATON OF COMPUTER BASED ON
TO SIZE AND PERFORMANCE.
• MICROCOMPUTER:-
It is the smallest type of computer. It can be used at
homes, offices, school etc. It can serve only one person at a
time and so can be called personal computer. These are the
most frequently used computers, better known by the name
―Personal Computers.‖
Peripherals such as keyboard, mouse, monitor and system unit
are parts of the microcomputer system.
Eg.-IBM PCs, APPLE Mac etc.
Types of microcomputer

Palmtop/hand
Desktop computer Laptop computer held computer
CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER
BASED ON PURPOSE:
Computer can be categorized by its purpose.
There are two main purposes of a computer.
These purpose are ―GENERAL and
―SPECIAL”.
CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER
BY PURPOSE:
• GENERAL PURPOSE COMPUTER:-
These computers are designed to work on different types of
applications. In these type of computers the programmes are not
stored permanently rather program are input at the time of their
execution. Personal Computers including Desktop, Notebooks,
Smart Phones and Tablets etc. are its example. Various task can be
accomplished by using these computers –E.g.. Writing, Editing,
manipulating different facts and figures in various databases,
controlling and organizing security system etc.
CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER
BY PURPOSE:
• SPECIAL PURPOSE COMPUTER:-
These computers are task-specific computers and are designed to
solve particular problems/purpose. Also called as Dedicated
Computers. The computer that landed man on the moon was
specially built for that purpose. Robots are special computer
built to do what man could have been doing by himself. Some
other examples- Computer system including Traffic Control
System, Video Games, Navigational system in Aircraft, Satellite
Launch Tracking, Oil Exploration and in Automotive Industries.
