LESSON 2: Similarities and Differences of MEDIA LITERACY, INFORMATION LITERACY & TECHNOLOGY LITERACY INFORMATION Knowledge of specific events or situations that has been gathered or received by communication, intelligence or news. MEDIA LITERACY The term media is a noun, which is the plural form of medium, refers to the communication channels through which we disseminate news, music, movies, education, promotional messages and other MEDIA LITERACY The ability to decode, analyze, evaluate and produce communication in a variety of forms. MEDIA LITERACY aims to empower citizens by providing them with the competencies (knowledge and skills) necessary to engage with traditional media and new technology. MEDIA LITERACY Media Literacy when put simply, is the ability to identify these different types of media and the messages (information) they can handle to store, relay, send, playback, edit, transmit, etc. Therefore, we as the readers, listeners, viewers or the recipients need to treat the media objectively, with the goal to find out or analyze what is being presented, what is appropriate and how we can make the most out of it. INFORMATION LITERACY Refers to the abilities to recognize when information is needed and to locate, evaluate, effectively use, and communicate information in its various formats. INFORMATION LITERACY The United States National Forum on Information literacy defines information literacy as "the ability to know when there is a need for information, to be able to identify, locate, evaluate, and effectively use that information for the issue or problem at hand". INFORMATION LITERACY identify - The need to know the specifics of the particular information needed. find - Getting that information from various sources. evaluate - Weigh up this acquired information from different sources and be able to thresh out the truth in it. apply - Using this thresh out information in making the decision or position to an issue to which it was purposely sought. TECHNOLOGY (DIGITAL) LITERACY It is the ability of an individual, working independently and with others, to responsibly, appropriately and effectively use technology tools to access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create and communicate information. Technological literacy prepares individuals to make well-informed choices in their role as consumers. TECHNOLOGY (DIGITAL) LITERACY The ability to use digital technology, communication tools or networks to locate, evaluate, use and create information. It also refers to the ability to understand and use information in multiple formats from a wide range of sources when it is presented via computers and to a person’s ability to perform tasks effectively in a digital environment.. TECHNOLOGY (DIGITAL) LITERACY refers to the ability of an individual, either working independently or with others, to responsibly, appropriately, and effectively use technological tools. Using these tools an individual can access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create and communicate information. TECHNOLOGY (DIGITAL) LITERACY Digital literacy includes the ability to read and interpret media, to reproduce data and images through digital manipulation, and to evaluate and apply new knowledge gained from digital environments TECHNOLOGY LITERATE 1. Can COMMUNICATE Media and Information Literacy MIL stands for media and information literacy, and refers to the essential competencies and skills that allow citizens to engage with media and other information providers effectively and develop critical thinking and life-long learning skills to socialize and become active citizens. MEDIA refers to the physical objects to communicate with such as radio, television, computers, etc. Information on the other hand, refers to the processed data, knowledge from a study, experience, instruction and symbol. LITERACY is the term coined for the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, compute and communicate using printed and written materials. SOCIAL MEDIA Forms of electronic communication through which people create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, etc. Performance Task Create and advocacy material showing your fight against fake news. Make sure to highlight the roles of media, information and technology literacy in your material. Choose one in the given choices. 1. Infographics to be printed on a long bond paper 2.
