A rubber ball is shot vertically upwards from the top of a building of height h. The ball
strikes the ground below after 2,32 s. It then immediately bounces to a height of
and lands on the ground 3,7 s after it was shot.
Ignore the effects of air friction. (The time of contact of the ball with the ground during
the bounce may be neglected.)
3.1 Calculate the time taken for the ball to reach height h after it strikes the
(2)
ground for the first time.
3.3 Is the collision between the ball and the ground elastic or inelastic? Give a
reason for your answer. (2)
3.4 Sketch the position-time graph for the motion of the rubber ball. Take the top of
the building as reference. Clearly show the following on your graph:

4.2 Calculate the magnitude of the velocity of the block-bullet system immediately
after the bullet struck the block. (4)
4.3 Calculate the magnitude of the velocity of the bullet just before it strikes the (4)
block.
4.4 During the collision, the bullet exerts a force on the wooden block. The collision
time is 0,2 s. Calculate the magnitude of the force that the bullet exerts on the
wooden block. (3)
4.5 The police officer is pushed slightly backwards by the butt of the rifle, which he
is holding against his shoulder, whilst firing the rifle. Name the relevant law of
motion, and explain why this happens. (2)

The diagram below shows a heavy block of mass 105 kg sliding down a rough 25°
inclined plane. A constant force F is applied on the block parallel to the inclined plane
as shown in the diagram below, so that the block slides down at a constant velocity.
The magnitude of the kinetic frictional force (fk) between the block and the surface of
the inclined plane is 286 N.
If the block is released from rest without the force F being applied, it moves the 2 m
down the inclined plane to the bottom.
5.4 ONLY use energy principals and calculate the speed of the block at the bottom
of the inclined plane. (5)
