A rubber ball is shot vertically upwards from the top of a building of height h. The ball
strikes the ground below after 2,32 s. It then immediately bounces to a height of
and lands on the ground 3,7 s after it was shot.

Ignore the effects of air friction. (The time of contact of the ball with the ground during
the bounce may be neglected.)

3.1 Calculate the time taken for the ball to reach height h after it strikes the

At a firing range a police officer is undergoing training. He fires a bullet of mass 15 g


into a stationary wooden block of mass 5 kg, suspended from a long, strong cord.
The bullet remains stuck in the block and the block-bullet system swings to a height
of 22 cm above the equilibrium position, as shown below. (Effects of friction and the
mass of the cord may be ignored.)

4.1 State the law of conservation of momentum in words. (2)

4.2 Calculate the magnitude of the velocity of the block-bullet system immediately
after the bullet struck the block. (4)

4.3 Calculate the magnitude of the velocity of the bullet just before it strikes the (4)
block.

4.4 During the collision, the bullet exerts a force on the wooden block. The collision
time is 0,2 s. Calculate the magnitude of the force that the bullet exerts on the
wooden block. (3)

4.5 The police officer is pushed slightly backwards by the butt of the rifle, which he
is holding against his shoulder, whilst firing the rifle. Name the relevant law of
motion, and explain why this happens. (2)

The diagram below shows a heavy block of mass 105 kg sliding down a rough 25°
inclined plane. A constant force F is applied on the block parallel to the inclined plane
as shown in the diagram below, so that the block slides down at a constant velocity.

The magnitude of the kinetic frictional force (fk) between the block and the surface of
the inclined plane is 286 N.

5.1 State the work-energy principal in words. (2)

5.2 Is the following statement correct?


The net work done on the block is greater than zero.
Write only YES or NO and give a brief explanation for your answer. (2)

5.3 Calculate the magnitude of the force F. (5)

John is sitting at the side of a road with a detector that can measure several
frequencies of sound waves. A police car and an ambulance travel at constant
velocity in the same direction and on the same road where John is sitting.

The siren of the ambulance emits sound waves with a constant frequency of 760 Hz,
while the siren of the police car emits sound waves with a constant frequency of
700 Hz. The detector that John has, measures the frequency of the sound waves
emitted from the ambulance as 860 Hz, and that of the police car as 660 Hz.
