Tutorial 8

This document contains 6 problems about simple harmonic motion. It examines oscillatory systems like springs, pendulums, and damped oscillators. The problems calculate values like spring constants, angular frequencies, amplitudes, speeds, accelerations, energies, and times. Key concepts covered include Hooke's law, simple harmonic motion equations, and the effects of damping on oscillatory motion over time.

TUTORIAL 8: SIMPLE HARMONIC MOTION

Answer all the questions.

Figure 1
1) Figure 1 shows three identical springs hanging from the ceiling. Nothing is attached to the
first spring, whereas a 4.50-N block hangs from the second spring. A block of unknown weight
hangs from the third spring. From the drawing, determine:
(a) The spring constant (in N/m) and, (Answer: 30.0 N/m)
(b) The weight of the block hanging from the third spring (Answer: 9.00 N)

2) Block of mass m = 0.750 kg is fastened to an unstrained horizontal spring whose spring

constant is k = 82.0 N/m. The block is given a displacement of + 0.120 m, where the + sign
indicates that the displacement is along the +x axis, and then released from rest.
(a) What is the force (magnitude and direction) that the spring exerts on the block just before
the block is released? (Answer: -9.84 N)
(b) Find the angular frequency ω of the resulting oscillatory motion, (Answer: 10.5 rad/s)
(c) What is the maximum speed of the block? (Answer: 1.26 m/s)
(d) Determine the magnitude of the maximum acceleration of the block (Answer: 13.2 m/s2)

3) A 55.0 g block oscillates in SHM on the end of a spring with k = 1500 N/m according to x
= xm cos(ωt + ϕ). How long does the block take to move from position +0.800xm to:
(a) position +0.600xm and, (Answer: 1.72 x 10 -3 s)
(b) position -0.800xm (Answer: 11.2 x 10 -3 s)
4) A 1.00 x 10 -2 kg block is resting on a horizontal frictionless surface and is attached to a
horizontal spring whose spring constant is 124 N/m. The block is shoved parallel to the spring
axis and is given an initial speed of 8.00 m/s, while the spring is initially unstrained. What is
the amplitude of the resulting simple harmonic motion? (Answer: 7.18 x 10 -2 m)

5) The length of a simple pendulum is 0.79 m and the mass of the particle (the “bob”) at the
end of the cable is 0.24 kg. The pendulum is pulled away from its equilibrium position by an
angle of 8.50 ᵒ and released from rest. Assume that friction can be neglected and that the
resulting oscillatory motion is simple harmonic motion.
(a) What is the angular frequency of the motion? (Answer: 3.5 rad/s)
(b) Using the position of the bob at its lowest point as the reference level, determine the total
mechanical energy of the pendulum as it swings back and forth , (Answer: 2.0 x 10 -2 J)
(c) What is the bob’s speed as it passes through the lowest point of the swing? (Answer: 0.41
m/s)

6)

Figure 2

For the damped oscillator system shown in Figure 2, the block has a mass of 1.50 kg and the
spring constant is 8.00 N/m. The damping force is given by -b(dx/dt), where b = 230 g/s. The
block is pulled down 12.0 cm and released.
(a) Calculate the time required for the amplitude of the resulting oscillations to fall to one-third
of its initial value. (Answer: 14.3 s)
(b) How many oscillations are made by the block in this time? (Answer: 5.27)
