Module 9:
Social Relationships in Middle and
Late Adolescence
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in

each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module
or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises
and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in

answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher
or facilitator.

Thank you.
Target

In your previous lesson, you learned about understanding of teenage

relationships, ways of showing attraction, love, and commitment, and ways to
become responsible in a relationship. Healthy relationships can decrease
stress and lead to happier and longer life. Our social and emotional support
from a committed relationship or strong friendship can be a weapon against
stress including lower blood pressure and stronger immune systems.

A relationship is not limited to the bond between a man and a woman,

where there is privacy, intimacy, loyalty, and trust. But it also encompasses
and extends to the connections and associations you have with your
classmates, schoolmates, teachers and other school personnel, friends, social
media friends, neighbors, acquaintances, fellow members of a group or
organization, fellow church members, and even strangers you met at some
point. These relationships tend to be less intimate, and they are referred to as
social relationships.

This learning material provides you information and activities that will
help you understand the roles of an individual in society, self-perception, and
social relationships in middle and late adolescence.

After going through this learning material, you are expected to:

1. Distinguish the various roles of different individuals in the society and how
they can influence people through their leadership and fellowship (EsP-
PD11/12SR-IIb10.1);
2. Compare one’s perception of himself/herself and how others see him/her
(EsP-PD11/12SR-IIc-10.2); and
3. Conduct a mini-survey on Filipino relationships (family, school, and
community) (EsP-PD11/12/SR-IIc-10.3).

Subtasks:
1. Identify the different individuals in the society;
2. Differentiate the roles of individuals (leaders and/or followers) in society;
3. Describe the types of social influence;
4. Explain the types of leadership and followership theories;
5. Evaluate your self-perception to have self-awareness; and
6. Conduct a mini-survey on Filipino relationships.

Roles of Individual in Society

Every individual is important and equally liable to some roles and

responsibilities when living in a society. We need to conform to the duties and
responsibilities for us to become good citizen. Position in the society or organization
is the foundation as to what roles we need to perform.

Social roles refer to the expectations, responsibilities, and behaviors we adopt

in certain situations. The ideas for expected or “normal” behavior are reinforced both
by the individual and by society. In family, the mother, the father and the children
play their specified role. For example, a mother’s social role is taking care of her
children, being home and making sure the house is clean. This is her duty and what
is expected from her from her husband and children. Overlapping of responsibilities
may occur due to absence of one member.

Here are some roles of individual in the society.

1. Family Members - Your mother, father, and siblings give you unconditional love
and unending support. They help, guide, and take care of you. Parents are expected
to teach, discipline, and provide the needs of their children. And children are
expected to cooperate and respect their parents.

2. Barangay Officials (Punong Barangay, Sangguniang Barangay Members,

Barangay Secretary and Treasurer, Sangguniang Kabataan Chairman, and his
members) – As the basic political unit, the Barangay serves as the primary planning
and implementing unit of government policies, plans, programs, projects, and
activities in the community, and as a forum wherein the collective views of the people
may be expressed, crystallized and considered, and where disputes may be amicably
settled.

3. Municipal and Provincial Government Officials - The municipality, consisting

of a group of Barangays, serves primarily as a general-purpose government for the
coordination and delivery of basic, regular, and direct services and effective
governance of the inhabitants within its territorial jurisdiction.
• Officials of the Municipal Government - There shall be in each
municipality a municipal mayor, a municipal vice mayor, Sangguniang
Bayan members, a secretary to the Sangguniang Bayan, a municipal
treasurer, a municipal assessor, a municipal accountant, a municipal
budget officer, a municipal planning and development coordinator, a
municipal engineer/building official, a municipal health officer and a
municipal civil registrar.

3 LU_Personal Development_Module9
During nCoV19 pandemic, the barangay, municipal, provincial, and national
levels help each other in implementing guidelines for its citizenry. The government
extends it services such as distribution of relief goods, allocation of Social
Amelioration Program (SAP), enhancing the health care services, safeguarding the
entry and exit point through military police, updating communication letters,
reports, and public statements, and implementing curfews, coding of vehicles (public
and private), and so on.

4. Health care workers (Frontliners, Barangay Health Workers, Rural Health Unit,
Nurses, and Doctors) - They assume overall responsibility to ensure that all
necessary preventive and protective measures are taken to minimize occupational
safety and health risks. They provide information, instruction and training on
occupational safety and health. They offer refresher health training on infection
prevention and control and use, putting on, taking off and disposal of personal
protective equipment (PPE). They use provided protocols to assess, triage and treat
patients, treat patients with respect, compassion, and dignity, and maintain patient
confidentiality, etc.

5. School Personnel (Principal, Teachers, and Other School Staff)- The DepEd
Mission: To protect and promote the right of every Filipino to quality, equitable,
culture-based, and complete basic education where:
• Students learn in a child-friendly, gender-sensitive, safe, and motivating
environment.
• Teachers facilitate learning and constantly nurture every learner.
• Administrators and staff as stewards of the institution, ensure an enabling
and supportive environment for effective learning to happen.
• Family, community, and other stakeholders are actively engaged and share
responsibility for developing life-long learners.

6. Security Personnel (Barangay Tanod, Police, Military/Army) – Security personnel

patrol and inspect property against fire, theft, vandalism, terrorism, and illegal
activity. They monitor people and buildings to prevent crime. Security personnel are
authorized to use deadly force to protect the officer or others from what is objectively
and reasonably believed to be an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm.

7. Clergy -These are leaders within established religions. Their roles and functions
may vary in different religious traditions but usually do specific rituals and teaching
their religion's doctrines and practices. They conduct religious worship, performs
spiritual functions associated with religious faith, and aids in the spiritual well-being
of the congregation. Clergy members provide spiritual, personal, and moral guidance
and assistance to church members, and will offer encouragement to those facing
hardship or illness. They can be spiritual leaders in the Roman Catholic, Protestant
Christian, Jewish, and Islamic religions, and are also known as priests, ministers,
pastors, rabbis, and imams.

8. Friends and Schoolmates - Real friends help us in our gloomy days. Sometimes,
they push us to our limits. They offer their shoulder when we need someone to lean
on. They give encouragement, support, love, and care. They help us handle stress

4 LU_Personal Development_Module9
such as relationship problems. While we are depressed, they help us laugh and feel
comfortable. They provide us with good guidance. Friends are ones with whom we
may share deep secrets. They accept all our thoughts, even if they are worst. Friends
never anticipate anything in return. They live with us right through our whole life.
They are the biggest support in our life. We always feel safe in the company of our
friends.

Our society plays a major role in the life of a teenager. Teens must be mindful
of who they follow, go with/join and imitate. Teenagers who join youth groups,
organizations, and clubs are happier and less likely to drink alcohol, smoke, and
take illegal drugs. Research have shown that getting involve in a good organization
and actively serving or volunteering in the community will benefit teens.
Any position in the organization has corresponding roles to be performed.
Local community activities can boost your confidence and self-esteem. It promotes
good mental health and well-being. You can also gain more connections or friends,
and help you build new skills. You can take civic responsibility and be active in your
community by:
• joining community clean-up drives;
• helping community projects;
• promoting cause- example: Clean and Green Program, recycling, get active in
sports;
• volunteering in feeding program, Christmas program, and repacking of goods;
and
• leading online campaigns to save local wildlife animals.

When you get involved in community activities, you will get a lot of personal
rewards and feeling of achievement. There is a big possibility that you will become a
SERVANT LEADER or merely a good follower. All leaders in our community play a
very important role and can affect us through their leadership style. They influence,
guide, direct, and encourage their members in the organization.

Leadership is the inspirational and mobilization of others to undertake

collective actions in pursuit of common good. It is an art of guiding others to create
a result that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.

A follower is a person who follows his leader in regard to his or her ideas or
belief and discipline. The leader in return follows the rules of the organization. It
means that a person should be flexible either to work as a leader or as a follower.

“A GREAT LEADER STARTS OFF AS A GREAT FOLLOWER”

Types of Social Influence, and Leadership and Followership Theories

Social relationships refer to our interactions and behavior with one another.
Compared to personal relationships, we offer less intimacy and show less
vulnerability in these kinds of relationships. However, social relationships may still
be exclusive and demand cooperation and a certain level of loyalty.

Our social relationships influence our actions, attitudes, behavior, beliefs, and
perspectives. Social influences include:

1. Compliance occurs when you seem to agree or follows as what you are required
to do or believe in, but you do not necessarily agree or believe in it;
2. Identification occurs when you are influenced by someone you like or look up to,
like actors and actresses, a social celebrity, a superhero, and the like;
3. Internalization happens when you can own a certain act or belief and you are
willing to share it in private and in public;
4. Conformity happens when there is a change in your behavior, belief or thinking
to be like or conform to others. It is very strong among middle and late adolescents
as supported by the fact that at this age, there is a strong need or desire to seek
approval from and be accepted by others. This is brought about by peer pressure and
is one of the reasons why people who belong to the same group look and behave
similarly;
5. Conversion occurs when you wholeheartedly change your original thinking,
actions, beliefs, and attitude to align with others in a group;
6. Reactance happens when you willingly reject a social influence exerted on you by
and individual or a group. This is non-conformity;
7. Obedience happens when you follow what other people tell you to do, although it
does not necessarily reflect your beliefs or values. This is like compliance and stems
either out of fear or respect for other people;
8. Persuasion occurs when you influence other people to change their beliefs,
actions, and attitudes by appealing to their emotions; and
9. Minority influence happens when a bigger group of people is influenced by a
smaller group.

Leaders of groups and organizations ensure that followers cooperate to achieve

a common goal, be it short term or long term. In connection to this, there are several
theories that talk about leadership and followership. These include:
1. Trait Theory defines leadership based on certain personality traits like
decisiveness and persistence, which are generally suited for all leaders;
2. Behavioral Theory defines leadership as a learned behavior;
3. In Participative Theory, a leader involves people to make common decisions;
4. Situational Theory sees leadership as based on the factors present in a situation;
5. Transactional Theory sees leadership as a transaction of resources or positions,
and uses rewards and punishments;
6. In Transformational Theory, a leader motivates others to support and make a
vision happen;
7. Authentic Leadership includes three basic axioms of leadership which are the
following:

6 LU_Personal Development_Module9
a. Leadership is situational which means that a leader acts based on what
is required of him in a situation;
b. Leadership is non-hierarchical which means that a leader must possess
certain characteristics, skills, and connections; and
c. Leadership is rational which means that leaders and followers have a
mutual relationship.
8. Heroic Leadership follows four principles:
a. Self-awareness is knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses;
b. Ingenuity is challenging the comfort zones and thinking outside the box;
c. Love promotes positivity and respect; and
d. Heroism involves motivating and inspiring other people to aim for higher
goals.
9. Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) Theory states that the effectiveness of a leader
depends on the quality of relationship he has with his followers.

Leaders can be visionaries (Why Leader), realists (How Leader), and builders
(What Leader).

Self-Perception

It is very important that a person should have a self-awareness and is sure

with his/her self-perception which may or may not be affected by the people around
him/her.

Self-Perception Theory, proposed by Daryl Bem, suggests that people

develop attitudes and opinions by observing their own behavior and drawing
conclusions from it. This theory also downplays the role of internal thoughts and
emotions in attitude formation. It illustrates that “we are what we do.” According to
self-perception theory, we interpret our own actions the way we interpret others’
actions, and our actions are often socially influenced and not produced out of our
own free will, as we might expect.
Concepts:
• The self-concept is a knowledge representation that contains knowledge about
us, including our beliefs, personality traits, physical characteristics, abilities,
values, goals, and roles, as well as the knowledge that we exist as individuals.
• Self-esteem is the feeling we have about ourselves.
• Self-ideal is the way we would like to be.
• Physical characteristics are an important component of the self-concept, and
they are mentioned by many people when they describe themselves.
• Personality trait is the specific and stable personality characteristics that
describe an individual (“I am friendly,” “I am shy,” “I am persistent”).
• Social identity is the sense of our self that involves our memberships in social
groups.
• Self-complexity is the extent to which individuals have many different and
relatively independent ways of thinking about themselves.
• Self-concept clarity is the extent to which one’s self-concept is clearly and
consistently defined

7 LU_Personal Development_Module9
• Self-awareness refers to the extent to which we are currently fixing our
attention on our own self-concept.
• Self-consciousness is experienced when our self-concept becomes highly
accessible because of our concerns about being observed and potentially
judged by others.

Steps to Knowing Yourself

1. Discover your values – A value is something you strongly believe in.
2. Live by what you value – The closer your values come to your actions the
happier you will be

Advantages of a Good Self-Image

• A good leader to others
• Failure is not devastating
• Doesn’t submit to peer pressure
• Willing to experiment and try things
• Can look at bad points and change them
• Believes in self and makes life successful
• Is not a threat to others and cannot be threatened by others
• Know how to appreciate and look at life positively, not “why me”
• Easier to make friends and have more meaningful relationships.
