TO ALL
TO ALL PARISHIONERS
PARISHIONERS
Dear Parishioners
Are you ready for Christmas if a phrase we often hear this time of year, well in
truth my answer is usually I haven't even started getting ready. Advent Sunday
on 3rd December heralds in 4 weeks of preparation even through the shops and
supermarkets have been advertising things for Christmas since September.
Advent is the season for preparing not only to celebrate the birthday of our Lord
but also to prepare for is coming again.
Its the time of year when “It's a Wonderful Life” often is on television. It is the
quintessential Christmas story with a hero and a villain and we all know that the
good guy wins in the end. That Christmas Eve in Bedford Falls reminds us all of
Christmases past as we look to the coming of the baby Jesus this year, and
Christ who is to come in the future.
Like George Bailey, we sometimes focus on the negative. Our world today can
present us with many reasons to lose hope, our TV screens are full of war and
destruction and so much negativity. We can become so tied up with all that is
bad and with distractions that make it easy to miss the true meaning of the
Christmas season. But in fact, this is the season of light, whether from the lights
of the Christmas tree, the glow of the Advent wreath candles, the flame of the
Menorah, or perhaps simply our wonderful Norfolk skies on a rare day of
sunshine in December. If only we can take time to stop and gaze in wonder. All
of these can remind us of the presence of God and the promise of hope that is
fulfilled in this holy season.
Remember that behind the packages and the lights is the radiance that is our
God. See the hope in the faces of the people around you. See it in the faces of
your family and friends and fellow workers. See it in your own face when you
look in the mirror. Doing this will allow each of us to welcome that little baby on
Christmas, the way that Mary and Joseph so willingly welcomed him into their
lives. And know that God so lovingly welcomes us into His.
Have a quiet Advent, a Merry Christmas hope for the New Year with every
blessing from all of the Ministry Team

Pott Row Methodist Chapel
Every year, the Lectionary takes us full circle from the anticipation of Messiah,
Jesus birth, his ministry, his suffering and death ending with our remembering of
who He was. In the 3 year Lectionary cycle [A, B, & C], we view Jesus through
the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and interspersed each year with the
Gospel of John.
Yet, where are you this year, today even, with your walk with our Lord, Saviour
and friend? At the moment, are you rejoicing that the Lord is king? Is Jesus your
glorious hope?
There are many, many things happening in everyone's lives each and every day꞉
sometimes it's fantastic, sometimes devastating, there are expressions of
hopefulness, some sorrow, some regret, some bring us quiet assurance, some
loud unbelievable alleluias.

A View from Lanky Hill
I will not dwell long on the rainfall amounts recently, enough tosay that of the 18
inches we have received this year, 6.5 inches fell in October, and with November
only 13 days old, we have experienced 2 inches already.
I suppose the high rainfall amounts encourages the earthworms to work the soil
closer to the surface, this in turn brings their chief predators, the furry cured mole
to become very active.
All the years I've lived here never have I experienced such an influx of mole hills
into the back garden.
Luckily, I have instructed a local mole catcher to arrive up here and trap the
pesky little fellas. Until he arrives Jake my ever‑present mongrel terrier has
learnt a new word! On the mention of 'Moley' he rushes out to the b earest mole
hill, digs energetically, turns and runs back indoors, naturally with muddy feet, its
me who has to clean up the mud strewn carpet.
Talking about mole catchers, the most expert I remember was from Gayton.
Now long passed away, his name was Arthur Mayes who lived alone in a cottage
at the top Winch Road. He was originally a soldier in the Royal Norfolk Infantry
regiment, who, whilst serving in Singapore was, with many of his colleagues
captured by the Japanese in 1942. He survived 3 years in their prison camps,
helped build the Burma Railway Line. Returning to Gayton he became a most
skilled mole catcher. On Sunday lunch times he cycled down to Gayton Crown
pub, there he downed a few pints of mild aloe and amused all his colleagues
with a story that several moles that he caught were found to be upside down in
the trap.
Of course, someone was playing tricks on him by going to his traps first and
inverting the dead corpses. There was a photo of him in the back bar of the
Crown pub, but I think this has long been removed by new Landlords.
Last month's edition described the village of Burnham Thorpe, now travel
eastwards towards the village of Stiffkey. Two items of some amusement can be
told of this quaint little village. Firstly, when I was fitter (pre stroke) a group of us
would travel at lunchtime to rake cockles out of a gravel bank, parking where the
river Stiffkey flows out into the North Sea, just at the westerly end of Blakeney
point. Growing in gravel, these 'Stiffkey Blues' did not need to be washed
thoroughly to remove the sand in them which could spoil the enjoyment of them.
On the way home to eat our cockles we would stop at the Red Lion pub for a
quick drink. Now the Red Lion has its own story to tell. Back in the early 19th

Century the vicar of Stffkey church was a bachelor by the name of Davidson. I'm
afraid he frequently travelled by train down to London where he be‑friended a lady
of ill repute and brought her back to stay with him in the Stiffkey Rectory. This
was alright until on one occasion the London lady sold her story to the local
population. The result of t his was that the Bishop of Norwich defrocked the
Reverend Davidson. Now without a home to live in, without an income to live on,
he decided to pay penance by travelling to Skegness where in the Summer
months he lived in an iron cage with a rathe fierce tiger! Of course the tiger
eventually killed and ate him. This was all perfectly true. Today anybody can travel
to the region and purchase a book on the subject.
That's all for this year. All of you have a Happy Christmas and New Year.

OPEN LETTER TO GRIMSTON CRICKET CLUB
When my husband, Michael, and I moved to Grimston in June 2003 from leafy
Twickenham we were both incomers and townies!!
One of our very early pleasures came from Grimston Cricket Club which was very
much in its heyday at that time. Driving past the ground on a sunny Saturday or
Sunday afternoon it was a true picture of an idyllic English village to see the white
garbed teams playing against the background of trees, fields and their very own
thatched clubhouse. It made our hearts sing and also confirmed what we already
knew, we had made the right decision! I remember that there was an elderly
couple who lived in a bungalow directly opposite to the ground who used to watch
every home match from the comfort of their own front garden whilst leaning on the
wall with a cup of tea. We used to wave and they always waved back.
Over the years we saw a sad decline in the activities of Grimston Cricket Club;
fewer home fixtures to maintain our rural idyll; the front garden supporters were
no more and the highlight of the year at the ground became the Great Snail Race
each July.
Then along came Sam Adkin, Mark Tilbrook, Tim Tilbrook et al who set about
raising Grimston Cricket Club to it's former glory. Year round youth coaching for
boys and girls formed the basis which has led to over 50 players taking part plus
teams at both Under 9's and 13's level. Further expansion is forecast. The adults
team play in the Mid‑Norfolk Sunday Cricket League. However, laudable as these
achievements are they are not the primary reason for me writing this open letter;
it is rather the dramatic impact which has been made on the communities of
Grimston, Congham, Roydon and Pott Row and further afield including
Massingham, East Winch, Gayton. The overwhelming success of Grimston
Cricket Club is solely due to the hard work, determination, dedication and
commitment of those who manage it. From the outset it was made clear that they
wanted the Club to become a community hub which it has achieved if the list of
sponsors is anything to go by ‑ The Three Horseshoes, Wayne Tuffs – Builder,
Phil Hurr – Roofing, SW Electrical to name but a few. Focus Security sponsor the
1st Team. A big thank you too to the Redhead family who organise the annual
Family Fun Day. The management has succeeded in securing the Club's place at
the heart of the community as it comes together for home matches at all
levels, volunteering to help with ground maintenance , help on match days with
car parking and the essential and quintessential cricket teas. The management
have worked tirelessly seeking out grants to improve facilities and have been
contined on page 27

The only place where reindeer roam wild in Britain is in the Cairngorms where
they were reintroduced in the 1950s. ·
In 2008 a small herd was imported from Scandinavia and set free on the
Trevarno Estate near Helston, Cornwall, to make Christmas feel more authentic
for tourists; in May this year a male calf was born to parents Prancer and
Rudolph, and named Blue after the bluebells for which the estate is renowned. ·
They eat fungus in winter, and leaves and grasses at other times. ·
Laplanders use reindeer for milk, clothing, and sometimes keep them as pets. ·
According to one researcher, the myth of flying reindeer pulling Santa's sleigh
was started by hallucinating northern Europeans who had been eating magic
mushrooms.

Service of Dedication at St Andrew's Congham
On Sunday 12th November the Bishop of Lynn, the Right Rev'd Dr Jane Steen
conducted a special service of Dedication at Congham church to give thanks for
all the renovations and improvements that have taken place in 2023.
The work has been made possible thanks to a generous legacy from the late
Enid Driver, former Grimston postmistress. A plaque in Enid's memory has been
installed in the church
November's Coffee and Cake morning at St Andrew's church was very busy and
buzzing! Glenis's wonderful cakes and cheese scones were much enjoyed and
the new heating system and comfy chairs appreciated.
As it was Armistice Day a minutes silence was observed at 11am. Thank you to
everyone who came along. We raised £188 for church funds.
The next Coffee morning will be on Saturday 2nd December at the usual time ‑
10.30am ‑ 12pm. After that we look forward to seeing you again on Saturday 3rd
February 2024!
We are a free and easy club, that play for fun. With the emphasis on the social
side, than playing. Unfortunately, we are in serious need of new members. We
meet each Thursday, at 2p.m‑4p.m in Grimston village hall (Pott Row). Come and
join us, the first session is free. After that, if you come again, you can join, then
pay £2 a session.
