1. identify the topic sentence/ main idea of a paragraph; and
2.explain the importance of determining the main idea.

Source: https://www.pinterest.ph/pin/104216178853388275/
What are the characters talking about?

2
The characters in the comic strip talk about finding the main idea of a paragraph. In this
lesson, you will learn how to find the main idea of a paragraph.

A paragraph is a group of sentences that develops one main idea. It is a unit of thought in
which all the sentences present and develop one main idea. The main idea is usually found in one
sentence called the topic sentence. The other sentences support the main idea with examples,
details, facts, reasons, or incidents. These are called the supporting details. Many paragraphs
have the topic sentence in the beginning. Other paragraphs have the topic sentence in the
middle. Still, other paragraphs end with a topic sentence that summarizes in one final statement
the specific information that came before. (Source: Prentice Hall-Grammar and Composition 2,
p473)

To find the topic sentence in a paragraph, look for the sentence that acts as an umbrella for
all the ideas in the other sentences.

Let us take these examples:

1. The Philippines has rich natural resources. It is rich in minerals, including gold, silver,
copper, nickel and iron. It has extensive forests and agricultural lands. It is one of the world’s
largest producers of sugar, bananas, mangoes, and copra. Fish and other marine products
abound in Philippine waters because its 7,103 islands are surrounded by the China Sea, the
Pacific Ocean and the Sulu Sea. (Source: Skill Builders for Efficient Reading 8, p.90)

The topic sentence is: The Philippines has rich natural resources. It expresses the main idea
of the paragraph. It is found at the beginning of the paragraph. The supporting sentences are
those that give details about the main idea.

2. Quarterbacks must have skill in the act of throwing a pass and they must think quickly.
Running backs must also be fast on their feet and quick to move away from tacklers. Linemen,
on the other hand, must be good at blocking the running advances of the other team, and they
must develop strength and determination. Each position in football requires special skills.
(Source: Prentice Hall Grammar and Composition 2, p 474)

The topic sentence is: Each position in football requires special skills. It is the main idea. It
is found at the last part of the paragraph and its supporting details are written before it.

Directions: Read the following paragraphs and identify the topic sentence.
1. 1Man communicates with his Creator in varied ways. 2He may fall on his knees and lift his
heart and mind to heaven through prayer and supplication. 3He may perform rituals. 4He may
illustrate religious sentiments effectively through the medium of music. (Source: Skill Builders for
Efficient Reading 7, p.104)

Forests and woodlands provide a home for many plants and animals. Many people like
forests because of the peace and beauty they find there. Beautiful orchids and wildflowers bloom
in the forests. The roots and the soil under the trees take in large amounts of rainwater. This
prevents erosion and floods. The forest’s soil also filters water so that it is pure as it enters
streams and wells. Forests purify the air we breathe. As green plants manufacture food, they
release oxygen into the air. Forests are useful as well as beautiful.

DAY 3
Lesson 2 WHAT IS A SUMMARY?

After going through the process of discovery with the learning tasks, you are expected to:
1. determine how to summarize a paragraph; and
2. explain the importance of knowing how to summarize the inform.

Improving your comprehension skills requires you to simplify ideas. You may have come
across long selections and you are required to simplify them in your own words. To comprehend
better, you must learn to locate main ideas in paragraphs, note supporting details and distinguish
between important and unimportant details. Comprehension also means to learn the skill in
summarizing. You will have to follow certain steps for you to be guided in making a summary.

What is a summary?

A summary is a shortened version of a piece of writing. It condenses a selection, but highlights

or restates its main points. A summary eliminates details, examples, supporting points,
explanation and comments, making important points easy to understand.

In other words, a summary is a brief statement, in your own words, of the main ideas and
supporting details used in a reading text .(https://slideplayer.com/slide/13095283/).

Original Paragraph:

Skipping breakfast might seem like an easy way for dieters to cut calories. However,
new research finds that the majority of people who are successful at losing weight and keeping
it off eat breakfast everyday. (36 words)

Summarized paragraph:

Research shows that people who wish to lose weight do not skip breakfast.

Source: https://slideplayer.com/slide/13095283/

Process questions:
1. Which of the paragraphs do you easily understand?
2. Do you understand the original version or the summarized version? Explain.
3. Does the summarized paragraph contain the same idea as the original one?

5
Why do we summarize?
1. First, we summarize when the text or passage is very long. A long text is understandable
when its important details are simplified and easy to understand.
2. Next, when there are a lot of minor details in the text that distract from the main points.
3. Lastly, we summarize to check one’s understanding of the text.

Why is summarizing important?

1.Summarizing teaches students the skill to recognize the most important ideas in a passage or
text.
2. It trains students to identify irrelevant ideas, focus on the important details and integrate the
main idea in a meaningful way.
3. Summarizing also improves memory for what is read.
4. Summarizing allows students to understand large quantities of information and to identify and
select the important points.
5. It also allows students to combine and organize the information in a logical order and rewrite
ideas in one’s own words and present them in short and clear sentences.
Now that you know what a summary is, reasons why we summarize and the steps to make
a summary, let us try to make a summary of the passage below.

Right after supper, Pepe found it hard to study for a test. So, he listened to some music,
but it only made him sleepy. He opened the windows of his room to let in fresh air, yet it didn’t
work either. Then, he went out to the living room to join his sisters working on their modules, but
he was distracted by their noise. So, he decided to do some push ups to make him feel energized.
Finally, as he sat down on his chair, he began reading his books, reviewed notes and answered
the exercises given.

Summary:

Pepe found it hard to study for a test. He tried listening to music, opening the windows of
his room and going out to the living room but none of these worked. So, he did some push ups
to energize him and finally, he got himself to study.

Reading is an integral part of a student’s life. You read to answer a given task. You read to
understand. To understand what you read , you need to learn how to summarize. Summarizing
is like panning for gold—it helps you look for and find the main points and key details in every
paragraph. Effective learning is all about identifying and understanding main points and key
details. Your summary statements should look like gold- main points, key details, and nothing
else.

GUIDELINES IN WRITING A SUMMARY

Here are simple steps to make a summary.

1. Read carefully and understand the passage.

2. Once you’ve read it thoroughly, identify its topic or main idea.
3. Underline the key words in the question to keep focused so that you do not deviate from the
task at hand.
4. Eliminate supporting details, events, examples, comments and explanations.
5. Use your own words in making your summary in just two-three sentences.
6. Read aloud and correct. Read the summary aloud, correcting any mistakes.

“The Northern Lights”

There are times when the night sky glows with bands of color. The bands may begin as
cloud shapes and then spread into a great arc across the entire sky. They may fall in folds like a
curtain drawn across the heavens. The lights usually grow brighter, then suddenly dim. During this
time the sky glows with pale yellow, pink, green, violet, blue, and red. These lights are called the
Aurora Borealis. Some people call them the Northern Lights. Scientists have been watching them
for hundreds of years. They are not quite sure what causes them. In ancient times, people were
afraid of the Lights. They imagined that they saw fiery dragons in the sky. Some even concluded
that the heavens were on fire.

Summary
The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, are bands of color in the night sky. Ancient people
thought that these lights were dragons on fire, and even modern scientists are not sure what
they are. (Source: Long Beach City College WRSC, https://www.lbcc.edu/sites/main/files/file-

The encircled parts are those that make up the main idea. The sentences that talk about
colors and shapes support the first sentence in the summary. The last four sentences
support the second sentence in the summary.

What I Can Do
Directions: Read the following text and write its summary. Write your answer on a separate
sheet of paper.
Root crops are a good substitute for rice and corn among the people in the highlands.
These crops are cassava, gabi, camote, ube and tugi. They are cooked in several ways – like
boiling, broiling, frying or making them into jam, pastillas and pudding. Root crops are rich in
