Highway Project

This document provides details for the structural design of the pavement for the Tsehay Mewucha-Kurata Gazet Road Project in Amhara Region, Ethiopia. It includes: 1) Determination of the Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) values for various vehicle classes based on a traffic count. 2) Calculation of the Equivalent Axle Load Factors (EALFs) for different vehicle types based on their axle configurations and weights. 3) Selection of a double surface treatment using a mix design report due to financial constraints.

TSEHAY MEWUCHA-KURATA GAZET ROAD PROJECT DETAILS

For a main access road found in Northern Wollo Zone, Amhara Region, The traffic count was
carried out by taking representative week in season 1(quarter 1) of the year 2013 E.C which is
summarized in Table 1 shown below. Analysis of data of the previous traffic counting years
indicated that seasonal factor is 0.95, 0.98, 1.05, and 1.01. For season 1, season 2, season 3, and
season 4 respectively. Whereas the normal annual traffic growth given is 3% and sub grade
design CBR OF 17%.
According to the schedule, the design construction may take 3 years. It will be constructed
beginning from 2016 and to be opened for traffic at the beginning of 2019.
 Do the geometric design by considering the given parameters
 Structural design based on ERA(2013): Pavement design report
 Mix design report if double surface treatment is selected over granular base
course due to financial constraints.
Given Ingredients: Both layer chippings with flakiness index=18
 Larger chippings Nominal size=20mm with Median size= 17mm
 Smaller chippings Nominal Size=10mm with Median size= 8mm
 consider bitumen selected is 150/200 penetration grade to be made from
5% softener mixed with 95% 80/100 penetration grade.

Mix Design for Double Surface Treatment

Determine ALD using Figure 9-6 from ERA Flexible Design Manual.
For Larger Chipping ALD= 12.75
For Smaller Chipping ALD= 6
Determine Rate: R=1.364* ALD
For larger: R= 1.364* 12.75
= 17.391kg/
For smaller: R= 1.364*6
= 8.184kg/
This tells us the amount of chipping applied per meter square
