Assignment – Application of Derivatives

Q1. A particle moves along the curve y = x2 + 2x. At what point(s) on the curve are the x and y coordinates of
the particle changing at the same rate?

Q2. Find an angle x which increases twice as fast as its sine.

Q3. A tank with rectangular base and rectangular sides, open at the top is to be constructed so that its depth is
2 m and volume is 8 m3 . If building of tank costs Rs 70 per square metre for the base and ₹ 45 per square
metre for sides. What is the cost of least expensive tank?

Q4. Find the point on the curve y2 = 8x for which the abscissa and ordinate change at the same rate?

Q5. Show that the function given by f (x) = x3 – 3x2 + 3x – 100 is increasing in R.

Q6. Water is leaking from a conical funnel at the rate of 5 cm /s. If the radius of the base of funnel is 5 cm and
height 10 cm, find the rate at which the water level is dropping when it is 2.5 cm from the top.

Q7. Find the intervals in which the function f(x) = sinx + cosx , 0  x  2 is strictly increasing or decreasing.

Q8. A man 2 metres high walks at a uniform speed of 5 km/hr away from a lamp-post 6 metres high. Find the
rate at which the length of his shadow increases.

Q9. Find the maximum and the minimum values, if any, of the function f (x) =|sin 4x + 3| on R.

Q10. The length x of a rectangle is decreasing at the rate of 5 cm/minute and the width y is increasing at the
rate of 4cm/minute. When x = 8 cm and y = 6 cm, find the rate of change of (a) the perimeter, (b) the area of
the rectangle.

Q11. Show that the right circular cone of least curved surface and given volume has an altitude equal to √ 2
time the radius of the base.

Q12. Show that the function f (x) = x2 – x + 1 is neither increasing nor decreasing in (– 1, 1).
Q13. If the sum of the hypotenuse and a side of a right angled triangle is given, show that the area of the
triangle is maximum when the angle between them is /3.

Q14. Find two numbers whose sum is 24 and whose product is as large as possible.

Q15. The sides of an equilateral triangle are increasing at the rate of 2 cm/sec. Find the rate at which the area
is increasing when the side is 10 cm.

Q16. Show that of all the rectangles inscribed in a given fixed circle, the square has the maximum area.
