Homework2 2

This document contains questions about digital signal processing topics including: 1) Evaluating the discrete time Fourier transform (DTFT) of signals at specific frequencies. 2) Defining important properties of the DTFT such as linearity, time/frequency shifting, and convolution. 3) Determining the frequency response of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems from their difference equations and plotting the magnitude and phase spectra. 4) Discussing the sampling and reconstruction of analog signals, including the relationship between the continuous-time Fourier transform and DTFT, conditions for mapping analog to digital frequencies, and the sampling principle.

In the period [0,𝜋].

1) x1(n) = [0,1,1,1,0]
2) x2(n) = [-2,1,1, -2]

Q2) By using the results of Q1, evaluate 𝑋(𝑒 𝑗𝜔 ) for x1(n) and x2(n) in the period [-𝜋,0].

Q3) Although 𝑋(𝑒 𝑗𝜔 ) is periodic and its period is 2𝜋, we practically draw and study it in smaller
interval [0, π]. Write you justification by explaining the two important properties.

Q4) Define the following important properties of DTFT:

1) Linearity
2) Time shifting
3) Frequency shifting
4) Conjugation
5) Folding
6) Convolution
7) Energy

Frequency Domain Representation of LTI Systems

Q5) Define the Frequency response of an LTI system 𝐻(𝑒 𝑗𝜔 ), Give the relation between the
frequency spectrum of an LTI system response 𝑌(𝑒 𝑗𝜔 ) and its frequency response 𝐻(𝑒 𝑗𝜔 ).

Q6) Estimate the frequency response function 𝐻(𝑒 𝑗𝜔 ) from LTI system difference equation, give
the general expression in terms of system coefficients vectors [b,a].
Q7) Determine the frequency response 𝐻(𝑒 𝑗𝜔 ) for each of the following systems, using
MATLAB, plot its magnitude and phase spectrum:

1) y(n) = x(n) + 2 x(n-1) + x(n-2) – 0.5 y(n-1) – 0.25 y(n-2)

2) y(n) = 2 x(n) + x(n-1) – 0.25 y(n-1) + 0.25 y(n-2)
3) y(n) = x(n) + x(n-2) – 0.81y(n-2)

Sampling and Reconstruction of Analog Signals

Q8) What is meant by Band-limited signal?

Q9) Give the relation between CTFT and DTFT over the interval 𝜔 ∈ [−𝜋, 𝜋]

Q10) By showing the analog and digital frequency domains, give the two conditions that should
fulfilled so that all analog frequencies could be mapped to distinct digital frequencies.

Q11) State the sampling principle.

Q12) Consider the analog signal:

𝑥(𝑡) = cos(2𝜋𝑓1 𝑡) + 3 cos(2𝜋𝑓2 𝑡) 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑓1 = 50 Hz and 𝑓2 = 100 Hz

Let’s sample it in two cases:
1) Fs = 300 sample/sec
2) Fs = 150 sample/sec
What happened in the reconstruction of the two cases?
