ASSIGNMENT #3

VECTORS IN CYLINDRICAL AND SPHERICAL COMPONENTS

PART I.

Problem solving. Show your solutions as clear as possible and box your final answer.

1.) Transform each of the following vectors to cylindrical coordinates at the point specified.
a) 𝐀 = 5𝐚𝐱 @ P(4,120°, 2)
b) 𝐆 = 4𝐚𝐱 − 2𝐚𝐲 − 4𝐚𝐳 @ P(2,3,5)
c) F = y𝐚𝐱 − x𝐚𝐲 + z𝐚𝐳 @ P(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧)

2.) Transform each of the following vectors to spherical coordinates at the point specified.
a) 𝐀 = 5𝐚𝐱 @ P(4,120°, 2)
b) 𝐆 = 4𝐚𝐱 − 2𝐚𝐲 − 4𝐚𝐳 @ P(2,3,5)
c) F = y𝐚𝐱 − x𝐚𝐲 + z𝐚𝐳 @ P(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧)

3.) Given the two points, C( ρ=3.61, φ= 146° , 1) and D(r =5, θ =20°, φ =30°), find:
a) the spherical coordinates of C
b) the rectangular coordinates of D
c) the distance from C to D

4.) Transform to cylindrical coordinates: G = (2x+y)ax −(y−4x)ay at point Q(ρ, φ, z).

5.) Given point P(-2,6,3) and vector 𝑨 = 𝑦𝒂𝒙 + (𝑥 + 𝑧)𝒂𝒚 , express P and A in spherical
coordinates.
6.) Convert points P(1,3,5), T(0, -4, 3), and S(-3,-4,-10) from Cartesian to cylindrical and
spherical coordinates.

7.) Express the following vectors in Cartesian coordinates:

a) 𝑨 = 𝜌𝑧𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜙 𝒂𝝆 + 3𝜌 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜙 𝒂𝝓 + 𝜌 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜙 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜙 𝒂𝒛
b) 𝑩 = 𝑟 2 𝒂𝒓 + sin 𝜃 𝒂𝝓

8.) Express the vector field 𝑫 = (𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 )−1 (𝑥𝒂𝒙 + 𝑦𝒂𝒚 ) in cylindrical components and
cylindrical variables. (b) Evaluate D at the point where 𝜌 = 2, 𝜙 = 0.2𝜋, and z=5,
expressing the result in cylindrical and rectangular components.
