Week4LearningActivitySheet 1

This document is a science learning activity sheet about electromagnetic waves for 10th grade students. It contains 7 activities for students to complete that involve labeling diagrams of the electromagnetic spectrum, arranging pictures and statements in chronological order about how radio waves and microwaves work, identifying which infrared devices are used in different technologies, filling in blanks about fiber optic communication, identifying real and fake statements about UV detectors and UV applications, classifying applications of X-rays, and rearranging letters to form words about gamma ray applications. The final activity has students complete a table summarizing the different electromagnetic waves and their applications.

Grade and Section: _____________________________________ Teacher: _____________________________

What’s In
Directions: Label the diagram of the electromagnetic spectrum below.

What’s More
Activity 1 – Pass the Message
Directions: Arrange the given pictures accordingly to the receiver on how must radio waves will be generated, transmitted and
received into the radio. Use number 1 for the first station, 2 for the second station and so on.
Activity 2 – Yes, I Do the Cooking
Directions: Arrange chronologically the statement on how microwaves work. Write numbers 1-5 on the space provided.
_____ The molecules are getting excited and move around rapidly so this means the temperature rises, then cooks the food!
_____ An internal device called magnetron is inside the oven used produce a strong magnetic field for oven to begin its work.
_____ These waves bounce up and down and left and right around the oven.
_____ When you press “Start”, the magnetron starts emitting microwaves, which are like radio waves but at a higher frequency.
_____ When they encounter the food, the energy from the microwaves causes molecules in the food to start moving around.

Activity 3 – Target Locked

Directions: Identify which infrared device are used for the given applications/technologies. Write EA (for electronic appliances),
NV (for night vision googles), MD (for medical diagnosis) and C (for communication) on the space provided.
_____ 1. Observing the blood flow as thermal monitoring and regulation of humans and animals.
_____ 2. Remote control is used to change channels on your television.
_____ 3. During encounter with opponent, it allows the user to see the movement of humans in the dark.
_____ 4. It is used by the patients to relief muscle pain and tension through infrared (IR) therapy.
_____ 5. Many objects in the universe are too cool and faint to be detected in visible light but can be detected in the infrared.

Activity 4 – Eye Vision

Directions: Fill in the blank to complete the statement, to know the correct answer look inside the box by shading the word/s
using different colors of crayons. Write your answer in the space provided.

Communication is the key to 1. ____________________________

in these modern times. There are many different mediums for faster
2. ______________________. However, fiber optic communication
is unique and has been in our lives for a while now.

Traditionally, we have 3. _________________________________

for communication. However fiber optics replaces the electrical
connectivity with light having a high travelling 4. ______________.

So fiber optic communication is a method of transmitting information

from one place to another by ending pulses of 5. ______________
through an optical fiber. The light forms an electromagnetic carrier
wave that is modulated to carry information. Using optical fiber, you
can boost the speed of connection by keeping the computer
networks connected together.

Activity 5 – Real or Fake

Directions: Given with two statements, identify which is correct and incorrect. Write the word REAL if it is correct and FAKE if
otherwise. Write your answer on the space provided.

__________ 1. UV detector denies the UV marks on authentic notes by shining ultraviolet light onto the bills.
__________ 2. UV detector verifies the UV marks on authentic notes by shining ultraviolet light onto the bills.
__________ 3. UV rays are non-ionizing radiation and is widely used in the food industry to control microorganisms by the use
of UV lamps.
__________ 4. UV rays are ionizing radiation and is widely used in the food industry to control microorganisms by the use of
UV lamps.
__________ 5. UV germicidal irradiation is effective inactivation of microorganisms where in bacteria and viruses are incapable
of reproducing and infecting.
__________ 6. UV germicidal irradiation is effective activation of microorganisms where in bacteria and viruses are incapable
of reproducing and infecting.

The next activities are practical applications of X-rays and gamma rays.
Activity 6 – See You When I See Through
Directions: The statements below are the application of X-rays in different fields. Your task is to classify which of these belong
for medical diagnosing and for engineering. Write each statement in the correct column.

Medical Diagnosis Industry and Engineering

> Detection of structural deficits or cracks of metals. > Used in airports to check luggage.
> Used to take picture of bone and teeth. > Used to find complications cavities and impacted teeth.
> Used to check flaws in welding joints, insulating materials. > Show detailed images of bone fracture.

Activity 7 – Gamma Rays Spectra

Directions: Arrange the following jumbled letters to form the applications of gamma rays.

Description & Jumbled Letters Rearranged Word

1. A bomb or missile that uses energy to cause an explosion. 1. _____________________________

(NCLEURA WAPOESN)
2. It is a type of surgery that uses gamma ray in cutting or destroying tissue. 2. _____________________________
(GMMAA KFENI)
3. Gama rays are used to clean all sorts of medical equipment to make sure that 3. _____________________________
patients do not get infected by bacteria. (SRILIETZAIONT)
4. A type of cancer treatment that uses beams of intense energy to kill cancer cells. 4. _____________________________
(RDAIO HETPYRA)
5. High-energy electrons pass through the food, destroying or inactivating bacteria 5. _____________________________
and viruses that cause foodborne illness. (ONAIRIARITD)
