Overall lesson aims and objective


By the end of this lesson, students will be better able to prepare and respond to Writing Task 1 question.

 get introduced to writing task 2 requirements.


 Learn some linking words to talk about cause and effects.

Setting Aims Show the lesson’s aim and ask the students to go through them quickly. 2 mins

Lead in to Slide 3 3 mins


activate ask ss to work in pairs/ small groups and get them to discuss the
background following questions:

How many parts are there is the IELTS writing test?
What do you know about the IELTS writing test?
How many parts does it have?
Conduct open class feedback
provide language feedback if needed.

Focus on Tell ss that they are going to watch a video about the Task 8 mins

Criteria- task response/achievement criteria and that they need to make notes of what
achievement they understand.

Tell ss that they can make notes in their mother tongue if needed.

Conduct a plenary session.

ask ss to work in pairs and respond as T/ F to the questions on slide 5.

Ask the ss if they need to watch again to check their answers.

Show the answers on the board for the ss to check theirs.

Introduction Show ss slide 6 and elicit what they know about cause and effect 10 mins
essays.

Explain that these essays are frequent to appear on the IELTS writing
test.

Tell ss in order to check their information about the meaning of cause-


and-effect essays, they will work in pairs; a writer and a runner. The
runner will run to the definition, memorise a word or two, come back,
recites the words to the writer to record them down.

Ss at the end take their copy of the definition and check if they have
any mistakes.

Explain that there is two different ways to organise cause and effect
essays- Slide 7

Flexi: Show slide 8, ask the ss to work in pairs and decides which
statements can be a topic for a cause and effect essay.
Focus on Thesis Tell ss that the most important part of the introduction is the thesis statement 20 mins
statement and tell them that it differs according to the essay’s focus ( whether on causes
or on effects.

Show Slide (9) and show the examples of the two thesis statements.
Answer any question if needed.

Show slide 10 and Ask ss to read the words on top and see if they understand
all of them, if ot, they should use Online Cambridge dictionary to find the
meanings they don’t know.

Use activity B in Worksheet 1 and ask them to complete the statements


with the correct words.
Ask ss to compare answers in pairs.
Show the answers on the board and ask ss to check the answers.

Flexi: Show Slide 11, ask ss to sort the vocabulary items from the
previous activity in the table provided ( Activity C in worksheet 1)

Show Slide 12 and ask ss to work in pairs / small groups to write strong thesis
statements- Slide 9

Monitor to provide support if needed.

Model Analysis - Tell ss that now they are going to study a model of a cause and effect 10 mins
essay and that they have to answer some questions as reading.
- Use Worksheet 1- Slide 13
- Ask ss to work individually first then in pairs to compare their answers.
- Hold an open class feedback

Focus on Vocab Tell ss that using linking words is very important in Writing task 2 15 mins

Show Slide 14 and tell ss that they have to sort the words in the pool in the
table provided. They can use a dictionary if needed.

Print out the answers, hang it on the wall for the ss to self-check.

Show Slide 15 and ask ss to link the sentences given using a word from the
previous activity. Show an example ( Slide 16)

Ss work together for 10 min.


Elicit the possible answers and show the suggested answer on the board.

Assessment - Tell ss that they should now start planning their own essay. 15min
- They should use the space provided n Worksheet 1
- They should work in pairs for 10 min.
- All ss should write the planned ideas they agree on with their peers.
- T changes pairs.
- Ss exchange their plans, read their friends’ plans and fill in the peer
editing outlines.

Reflection T guides ss through the reflection prompts and asks them to think about how 5mins
well the did / understood. They can use the traffic light system / smiley faces
to feedback to each other or the whole class.
Homework T shows QR code- ask ss to scan it to further practice the past simple vs the 2 mins
present perfect.
