This document provides templates for assessing competencies in two biology practical items.
The first template lists the elements a learner is expected to demonstrate, such as stating the aim and variables of an experiment, developing a hypothesis, describing the procedure and materials, presenting and analyzing data, and drawing a conclusion.
The second template focuses on skills like identifying and classifying organisms, explaining adaptations and sustainability, and drawing diagrams with accurate labeling.
Both templates include codes and total scores to guide test takers and item developers on the expected responses and highest levels of achievement that can be obtained.

Meaning:
A Basis of Assessment: Provides the competences/skills/abilities/output the learner is expected to exhibit in
responding to a task which is provided by item developer in the stimulus material corresponding to a given element of construct. Purpose: Guides a test taker/item developer on maximum number of responses expected to obtain the highest level of achievement/scores. Basis of Assessment Template for Biology Practical Item 1 Competency/Element Total Competence(s)/skills/abilities/output Code Scores of construct 1 scores The learner: Aim of experiment “Appreciates science Variables for the experiment inquiry/process Dependent variable skills in Biology”. Independent variable Controlled variable Hypothesis (Either Null or Alternative) List of equipments /requirements/materials Procedure Relevant procedure to experiment of Coherent procedure to experiment experiment Management of controlled variables (where applicable) Presentation Appropriate presentation of of data/results/observations data/results/ Correct/accurate/correct pattern observations of presented data Data analysis Processes data and makes & meaning of it interpretation/ deduction Conclusion Conclusion based on data interpretation and recommendation in regard to the problem in scenario.
Basis of Assessment Template for Biology Practical Item 2
Competency/Element Total of Code Scores scores construct 2 Competence(s)/skills/abilities/output The learner: 2a Identification/ using observable features/ “Appreciates diversity Classification (where applicable) of Suitability for survival/ function/adaptation Living things and (where applicable) sustainability of Remedies/solution to problem in scenario Natural 2b Drawing skills Reflects Biological skills resources". in (Title, magnification, Biology (Title, outline, accuracy magnification, &neatness) outline, accuracy Correct Labelling of parts &neatness) and labelling. NB: 1.The scoring guide is developed after clearly concluding the Basis of Assessment in relation to the set Item. 2.Assessment criteria can now then be developed after creating the scoring guide. (To indicate clearly when, how and where to award a correct score or deny it
