LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

DESCRIBING THE DIFFERENT MODES OF REPRODUCTION IN
ANIMALS SUCH AS BUTTERFLIES, MOSQUITOES, FROGS,
CATS AND DOGS

I. Background Information for Learners

Hello there! I am Miss Mary Grace S. Gagui,

your teacher in Science 5. I’m here to guide you in this
Learning Activity Sheet. I will help you describe the
different modes of reproduction in animals.

What are we waiting for? Let us begin by

reading the following information.

Most animals can only produce a new individual when two parents are
present. This is called sexual reproduction. Cats, chickens, dogs and many other
animals reproduce by sexual reproduction.
Sexual reproduction takes place when sex cells from two parent animals
(one male and one female) unite to form a new animal. This is in the process of
fertilization.
Fertilization takes place when the sperm cell of the male parent unites
with the egg cell of the female parent. The fertilized egg is called a zygote which
develops into an embryo. The embryo undergoes continuous development until it
eventually grows into a newborn animal. Fertilization in animals may be internal or
external.

2
Internal fertilization happens when the male animal releases sperm cells
into the body of the female animal to fertilize the egg cell. The embryo can either
develop inside the female body until it is born alive or develop inside an egg laid by
the female. Cats, insects, birds and cows undergo internal fertilization.

External fertilization occurs outside the bodies of the parents. The female
releases eggs into the water or attaches them to a plant or rock. The male then
releases sperm cells over the eggs to fertilize them. Frogs and fishes undergo
external fertilization.

In sexual reproduction, animals have different ways of reproduction. Some

animals are egg-laying while some are born alive.

Animals that lay eggs or hatched from eggs are called oviparous. Examples
of oviparous animals are birds, snakes, frogs, turtles, lizards and insects like
butterflies and mosquitoes.

Oviparous Animals

Animals that are born alive are viviparous animals. Cats, cows, dogs and
whales are some examples of viviparous animals. Their young look like them.

II. Learning Competency

Describe the different modes of reproduction in animals such as butterflies,

mosquitoes, frogs, cats and dogs (S5LT- IIe-5)

III. Activities

Are you now familiar with the different

modes of reproduction in some animals? We’re
you able to understand that animals do really
have different ways of reproduction?

If your answer is “NO”, try to read those

information again. If your answer is “YES”, it is
about time to test what you have learned in this
lesson by doing the sets of activities that I have
prepared for you. Let us start with Activity 1.

Activity 1
Direction: The following animals are reproduced sexually. Put a √ if it is born alive
and X if it is hatched from egg.

____ 1. ____ 4.

______ 2. _____ 5.

______ 3. ______ 6.

4
_____ 7. _____9.

____8. ____10.

Wow! You did great! You have correctly

described the modes of reproduction of the given
animals in this Activity. Let us now proceed to Activity 2.

Activity 2
Direction: Group the list of animals in the box according to their ways or modes of
reproduction. Write your answer inside the proper column below.

eagle cat goldfish pig ostrich

duck giraffe dog chicken cow

Animals that are hatched from eggs Animals that are born alive

5
Great job! It seemed that the lesson was really
clear for you. Let’s see how much you really have
learned by doing the next activity. I hope you can do it.

Activity 3
Fill out the table below. Check the column if the following animals are
hatched from egg or born alive. Then write in the last column if they are oviparous
or viviparous.

Animal Hatched From Egg Born Alive Oviparous

or Viviparous
lion
turtle
deer
crocodile
horse
snake
owl
lizard
sheep
rat

6
What an excellent job! Your work showed that you’re
well-informed and very knowledgeable of the lesson.
You really did well on that activity. Now let us proceed
to your last activity. Good luck!
.

Activity 4
Direction: Unscramble the letters in each number to complete the concept. Write
your answer on the blank.

1. XESLAU _______________
Reproduction that takes place when sex cells from two parent animals unite to
form a new organism.
2. NALTEREX _____________
Fertilization that takes place when the union of the sex cells happens outside the
body of both parents.
3. NITERLAN _____________
Fertilization happens when the male animal releases sperm cells into the body of
the female animal to fertilize the egg cell.

4. ROUSOVIPA _______________
Animals that are hatched from eggs.
5. PAVIVISUOR _______________
Animals that are born alive.

7
IV. Reflection

Congratulations! You have successfully

answered all the activities that I have prepared in this
LAS. You can now easily describe the different
modes of reproduction of some animals.

For your last task, be honest in answering the

questions in the Reflection part of LAS below.

You can also check your answers for all the

activities that you have done on the next page. Until
our next lesson! See you!
