Script Lecture 1

The two-level system is the fundamental building block of quantum mechanics. It consists of two states, labeled |0〉 and |1〉. The state of the system can be represented as a point on the Bloch sphere. Under the influence of a Hamiltonian, the state vector will precess around the Bloch sphere at a rate determined by the energy difference between the two states. Global phase factors do not change the physical state, as only relative phases have observable consequences. Measurements of the system cause its wavefunction to collapse into an eigenstate.
