Calculation

The document provides calculations for the shell thickness of an API 650 storage tank according to section A.4.1. It lists material properties and dimensions for the tank. It then calculates the minimum required thickness for each course using the 1-foot method formula from A.4.1. However, the calculated thicknesses are less than the recommended minimums in Appendix J, so the minimums from J.3.3 plus a corrosion allowance are used instead.

Calculation of Thickness by the 1-Foot Method, inches

Reference: API 650,
The 1-foot method calculates the thicknesses required at design points 0.3 m (1 ft) above the bottom of each shell c
Shell plates shall be designed in accordance with the formula given in A.4.1, but the nominal thickness of shell plate
shall not be less than the following:

a) for tanks with a diameter less than or equal to 3.2 m (10.5 ft) to 4.8 mm (3/16 in.);
b) for tanks with a diameter greater than 3.2 m (10.5 ft) to 6 mm (0.236 in.).

where
td bottom-course corroded shell thickness, (in.),
tt hydrostatic test shell thickness (in.),
D nominal tank diameter, in ft (see 5.6.1.1, Note 1),
H is the design liquid level, in ft (see 5.6.3.2);
G design specific gravity of the liquid to be stored, as specified by the Purchaser,
CA corrosion allowance, (in.), as specified by the Purchaser (see 5.3.2),
E is the joint efficiency, which is either 0.85 or 0.70 (see A.3.4);

Computed thickness by A.4.1 formula is less than recommended thickness in API 650 Apendix J. Therofre, we consid
thickness as recommended in J.3.3 plus corrosion allowance as given below:

Minimum Thickness as per J.3.3 (a) is = 4.8 mm

Corrosion Allowance = 1.2 mm
Thickness to be used 6 mm

For Bottom Cone

Recommended thickness is 8 mm
Roo thickness is 6 mm
Nominal thickness (in):

ove the bottom of each shell course.
