Talking About Experience
How to make the difference

Experience in detail Experience in general

“I went to a public school in high school” “I’ve been to a public school. I know what it is”

“We danced cueca every September” “We’ve danced cueca before. We can show you”

“They had spelling tests once a week” “They’ve had spelling tests. They can write very
well”
When we talk about experience and change,
we use present perfect:

I have been part of the Students’ Council

and I’ve been a teacher assistant. I am an
actual teacher now.

We use this tense, because it connects the

past with the present.
