(a) Two coaxial conducting cylinders of radii 𝑎=2 cm and 𝑏=4 cm, respectively, have a length
of 1m. The region between the two cylinders contains a layer of dielectric with 𝜀𝑟 =4 from
𝜌 = 𝑎 to 𝜌 = 𝑐 = 3cm.
(i) Derive the capacitance between the two cylindrical, then determine its value. Then, find
(ii) The stored energy in the capacitor if a voltage of 10V is applied between two cylinders.
(iii) The resistance between the two cylinders if the dielectric is not ideal and has 𝜎=10S/m.

(b) A point charge of 4𝜋𝜀𝑜 mC is located at point (10,-1,1) in Cartesian coordinates in the
presence of a perfectly conducting plane located at z=0 in free space.
(i) Sketch the image equivalence and the electric field lines
(ii) Calculate the electric field intensity, the electric potential and the surface charge density
at (0,0,0).

Question 5 10 Points (6, 4)

The surface 𝑦 = 0 separates two perfect dielectrics, where 𝜀𝑟1=3 in medium 1 (𝑦 < 0) and 𝜀𝑟2=5
in medium 2 (𝑦 > 0). The electric field is given in medium 1 as 𝐸̅1 = 10𝑎̂𝑥 − 20𝑎̂𝑦 − 20𝑎̂𝑧 V/m.
Find the following:
1) The component of 𝐸̅1 normal two media interface.
2) The component of 𝐸̅1 tangential two media interface.
3) The electric flux density and the polarization in medium 2.
4) The angle between 𝐸̅2 and the normal to the interface.
5) The energy densities in each region.

Question 6 10 Points + 5 Extra

(a) Consider an infinite solid conductor of circular cross sectional area with radius 𝑎 = 1⁄√𝜋
mm is made from homogeneous material with conductivity 𝜎1 S/m. The conductor
carrying a current 10A with a uniform current density in the 𝑎̂𝑧 direction.
(i) Apply Ampere's law to derive expressions for the magnetic field intensity everywhere

and sketch the results as a function of the radius 𝜌

(ii) Derive a formula for the resistance per unit length of the tube

(iii) Determine the magnetic flux density at 𝜌 = 1mm and at 𝜌 = 5mm.

(iv) Determine total magnetic flux per unit length inside the conductor (𝜌 < 2mm).

(v) Determine total magnetic flux per unit length outside the conductor (𝜌 > 2mm).

(vi) What is the self-inductance of the tube.

(b) EXTRA POINTS


Two semi-infinite filaments on the z-axis in free-space lie in the region −∞ < 𝑧 < −𝑎 and
𝑎 < 𝑧 < ∞ each carries a current 𝐼 in the 𝑎̂𝑧 direction.
(i) Calculate the magnetic field intensity as a function of 𝜌 and 𝜙 at 𝑧 = 0.

(ii) Calculate the magnetic field density for the case 𝑎 = 4 at point 𝜌 = 3 and 𝑧 = 0.

(iii) What will the field intensity be for the case 𝑎 = 0.
