OVERVIEW
Tesla Motors is named after electrical engineer and physicist Nikola Tesla. Nikola Tesla was
an inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist best known for his
contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system .
Tesla Motors, Inc. is an American company that designs, manufactures, and sells electric cars
and electric vehicle powertrain components.
Tesla Motors was incorporated in July 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Later
on, Musk joined Tesla's Board of Directors as its Chairman. In February 2004.
Tesla's primary goal was to commercialize electric vehicles, starting with a premium sports
car aimed at early adopters and then moving as rapidly as possible into more mainstream
vehicles, including sedans and affordable compacts.
Tesla first gained widespread attention following their production of the Tesla Roadster, the
first fully electric sports car.
Tesla unveiled the Tesla Model S all-electric sedan on March 26, 2009. The company's
second vehicle is the Model S, a fully electric luxury sedan.
Its next two vehicles are the Models X, a 5 or 7 seats SUV with its very characteristic
butterfly door
And the model 3, the most affordable sedan with 5 doors.
GIGAFACTORY
Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy through increasingly
affordable electric vehicles and energy products. To ramp production to 500,000 cars per year, Tesla
alone will require today’s entire worldwide supply of lithium-ion batteries. The Tesla Gigafactory was
born out of necessity and will supply enough batteries to support Tesla’s projected vehicle demand.
Today, the Gigafactory produces Model 3 electric motors and battery packs, in addition to Tesla’s
energy storage products, Powerwall and Powerpack.
Tesla broke ground on the Gigafactory in June 2014 outside Sparks, Nevada. The name Gigafactory
comes from the word 'Giga,' the unit of measurement representing “billions.” The Gigafactory is being
built in phases so that Tesla can begin manufacturing immediately inside the finished sections and
continue to expand thereafter. Already, the current structure has a footprint of more than 1.9 million
square feet, which houses approximately 5.3 million square feet of operational space across several
floors. Still, the Gigafactory is about 30 percent done. Once complete, Tesla expects the Gigafactory
to be the biggest building in the world – and entirely powered by renewable energy sources. Designed
to be a net zero energy factory upon completion, the facility will be primarily powered by solar, and
installation is already underway.
TESLA AUTOPILOT
Autopilot is Tesla’s breakout technology. It’s the feature that put autonomous driving systems on the
car. So what is Autopilot exactly, why is everyone so excited about it and what is it so controversial?
Here’s our rundown of what Autopilot is, as well as what it can do.
Tesla Autopilot is what’s known as an autonomous driver assistance system. In simple terms it’s a
feature that allows a Tesla to ‘see’ the cars and road around it, and drive itself to a limited degree.
The AutoPilot has been incorporated for the first time with the brand new Model S manufactured in
late September 2014.
Autopilot
Autopilot introduces new features and improves existing functionality to make your Tesla safer and
more capable over time.
It enables your car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically within its lane.
SUPERCHARGERS
A Tesla Supercharger is a kind of electric car charger, specifically designed for what’s known as
"rapid charging." In simple terms that means they offer incredibly fast charging speeds, of a kind that
should be able to recharge an electric car battery in under an hour.
However Superchargers are exclusive to Tesla, and will only work with the Tesla Model S Model
X, Model 3, Model Y.
The Supercharger network is the collective name for all the Superchargers across the world. They’re
all owned and operated by Tesla itself too.
The network is pretty vast, with more than 2,500 locations (or hubs) across the world. Each location is
made up of multiple charging points, meaning multiple cars can be plugged in at the same time.
Currently there are more than 30,000 individual Tesla Supercharging points around the planet.
CONCLUSION
A lot of potential to grow in the future:
First, the company is focused on advancing its autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) features.
Second, continuous improvements in vehicle software and battery packs are required for Tesla to
maintain its edge in EVs and FSD, and the company is focusing on these aspects, too. Energy storage
and solar deployments are other potential growth areas for Tesla; the company has been progressing
well in both segments.
Finally, Tesla is focusing on auto insurance as a growth opportunity. Obviously, the company plans to
do this differently than traditional insurance companies. Tesla plans to use its vast driver data for
things such as braking, turning, unsafe following, forward collision warnings, and so on to predict the
probability of a collision and offer custom premium rates based on that.
