3.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE ASSIGNMENT 2
This section list expected learning outcomes of the Assignment 2:
To evaluate the design problems related to chemical reactor systems and application of
computer software by identifying, formulating, research literature and analysing
complex chemical engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using
first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences to solve
problems in reactor design.

4.0 DESCRIPTION

This section describes in detail the complex engineering problem related to the
Assignment 2.

Question Statement

Ethylene is considered as one of the most important chemicals in petrochemical industry.

Ethanol can decompose in a parallel pathway to produce ethylene as a main product and
side product is acetaldehyde and aldehyde. At Frodo Chem Sdn Bhd, the ethylene is
produced via a reaction of ethanol. The reaction proceeds through a series of consecutive–
parallel reactions.

CH3 CHO → CH2 = CH2 rD1 = k1 k1 = 0.025 mol/liter.min

CH3 CHO → CH3 CHO rU1 = k2 CA k2 = 0.2 min-1
CH3 CHO → CH3 CH2 OH rU2 = k3 CA2 k3 = 0.4 liter/mol.min

5.0 YOUR TASK

This section describes in detail the tasks to be completed for Assignment 2.

Task 1
As process engineers at at Frodo Chem Sdn Bhd., you and your team are responsible for
overseeing the reactor used in ethylene production. The objective is to design a flow
reactors capable of producing 10,000 tonnes per year of ethylene, assuming an
operational period of 300 days per year. The reactors must be operated isothermally. The
reactor design must comply to several criteria as the followings:
a) Consider all compounds in the main reaction is in homogeneous liquid phase.
b) Consider the multiple reactions were taking placed in a reactor. .

c) You can assume operating condition and maximum conversion to produce ethylene

d) Reactor design: A single plug flow reactor (PFR) and continuous stirr tank reactor
(CSTR).

Task 2

If multiple reactions were taking placed in a reactor for which the products are
represented as a desired product (D) and undesired products (U1 and U2), it is claimed
that a minimum conversion could be achieved while maintaining the selectivity of D over
U1 and U2 at the maximum possible. Thefore the task must include the followings:

a) Propose a detailed calculation and a relevant plot (e.g. plot of selectivity vs the
key reactant concentration OR plot of selectivity vs conversion) to prove this
claim.
b) Suggest the best arrangement of multiple reactors (maximum of 2 reactors) that
capable of producing 10,000 tonnes per year of ethylene. Remarks: the undesired
reactions can be negligible if necessary.

Task 3

If the demand or requirements of the existing market cannot be fulfilled by the ethylene
production capacity at Frodo Chem Sdn Bhd, it has been essential to do exploratory
research to increase the production.
a) Propose three (3) strategies to increase the production of the desired product.

b) Suggest three (3) safety issues that should be considered related to the reactor design
that should be also considered during the expansion of the production capacity of ethylene

Write your proposal not more than one page.

The following items must be included in your report:

TASK 1

1. Process Background
i. Describe the process to produce ethylene in detail.
ii. Compare industrial and other alternative ethylene production reaction routes
available in the market. Discuss the similarities and the difference in a table in
terms of raw material, reaction equation, usage of catalyst, inlet temperature,
pressure, type of reaction, reaction rate constant and any relevant information, as
necessary.

i. Provide detailed, comprehensive, and clear assumptions for the design and
calculation steps for the designs in Task 1.
ii. Provide all relevant plots using any ODE Solver (Polymath / MATLAB / MAPLE /
Excel or etc.) (hint: all relevant plots for reactor design and operation).

4. Dimension of the reactor

i. Propose a relevant dimension of the reactor.

TASK 2

1. Discussion on Conversion and Selectivity.

i. Discuss the main findings, trends, limitations and state the justification
ii. Comparison and selection between conversion and selectivity chosen in Task 2
should be thoroughly discussed in this section.

2. Detailed Design
i. Provide detailed, comprehensive, and clear assumptions for the design and
calculation steps for the designs in Task 2.
ii. Provide all relevant plots using any ODE Solver (Polymath / MATLAB / MAPLE /
Excel or etc.) (hint: all relevant plots for reactor design and operation).

3. Dimension of the reactor

i. Propose a relevant dimension of the reactor.

4. Conclusion.
i. Provide a concrete conclusion for the analysis and finding.

TASK 3

1. Strategies to increase the production of the desired product.

i. Consider and discuss the factors or the process parameters that may give an
impact on the economics of the process, initial cost for any change in the process
and final cost of the product.

2. Safety Consideration/Factor
i. Elaborate the safety factors that should be considered while designing your
reactor. Describe the process parameters that may affect the safety of the reactor’s
operation.

the report.

b) The excel sheet and final report in pdf should be submitted by ONE of the team
members via Ms Teams/ufuture by 20th January 2024 (Saturday) before 12 midnight.
