1. General
1. General
The components of the Litespan-1540 described in this Product
Technical Description are the ones cor responding to DLC
applications based on SDH and PDH transpor t network
topologies.

Litespan-1540 FL based on an APON network topology has its

own technical description and is out of the scope of this one.

The components described here are Multi-service access nodes

for DLC applications, with the transport (SDH or PDH) fully
integrated in the system.

The Litespan-1540 is targeted to both residential and business

users, offering switched and leased line services.

At the subscriber side both narrowband (NB) and broadband

(BB) services are offered. Among the variety of NB-services that
are supported, are included POTS, ISDN BA, ISDN PRA and
analogue and digital leased lines using HDSL or HDB3 line
encoding or optical transport.

As to BB-ser vices, they are provided by means of ADSL line

cards, that are making use of ATM as a transport means. In the
near future it will also be possible to use a VDSL-type of
interfaces.

The offering of this wide range of services from 1 equipment, the

Litespan-1540, is made possible by the MLS, the Multi Ser vice
Line Shelf. The MLS is the host, not only for all the different NB
and BB line cards, but hosts as well the transmission and
controller cards of the network element.

Typical configurations for building up the operator's network are

in case of an SDH network ring configurations, using the STM-1
or STM-4 transport boards or star configuration where use is
made of STM-1 point to point connections. In a PDH network the
SDH-transpor t boards are just replaced by electrical
(HDSL&HDB3) or optical PDH transport boards. More complex
network configurations, based on SDH & PDH sub transport
networks are also supported. Finally the Litespan-1540 can also
be integrated with other Multiser vice access family members,
that are for example focused on pure business application.

An integrated management solution makes it possible to handle

the access network as one whole. The Alcatel solution consists of
an Operations System consisting of a Element Manager and a
Network Manager. The Element Manager manages the Litespan-
1540 network elements and the possible Alcatel ADMs included
in the Access Network. It gives the operator the possibility to
manage the different network elements from one remote site.

3DL 00586 AAAA TQZZA Ed.2 Alcatel Industry confidential 5

The Network Manager provides an over view of the complete
network as one entity. Further integration of the Element Manager
and Network Manager into the rest of Alcatel's Management
solution permits to satisfy a diversity of management requirements,
reducing the Cost Of Ownership of the deployed network.

The Litespan-1540 is the natural evolution of the Access products

within Alcatel. The Litespan-1540 family offers the possibility to
match fully the requirements of the operator for various access
network technologies including DLC (PDH and SDH) and FITL.
In this sense it will be possible to built up your network,
combining the different elements of the Litespan-1540 family. The
reference network is represented in the Figure 1.1.

The advantage for the operator lies in the fact that ever y
Litespan-1540 family member makes use of the same components,
like controllers, ser vice boards, ser ver boards, transmission
boards to built up the different network elements.

The system suppor ts a wide range of traditional narrowband

inter faces and ser vices for residential and small business
subscribers, but exhibits its real strength in its readiness to
emerging broadband ser vices such as Multimedia and Fast
Internet Access and other new and rapidly growing interactive
data communication services.

3. Product overview 3. Product overview
The Litespan-1540 is a Network Element, acting as access
concentrator/multiplexer for a number (60-2000 POTS eq.) of
residential and SOHO subscribers, for nar rowband and
broadband services. The interface towards the backbone network
(towards the Local Exchange) is formed by SDH or PDH
transport equipment. The transport is in most cases regarded as
par t of the access network, either in ring (SDH), star
(SDH/PDH) or in point-to-point (SDH/PDH) fashion, and is thus
managed in an integrated way with the DLC.

The inter face towards the end-users is for med for most
residential and SOHO subscribers, by copper drops, which can
range from 1-2 km (typically a DLC placed at the FDI) to more
than 2 km (DLC in central office). The DLC can also be used for
replacing small electromechanical or out dated exchanges, where
fiber SDH access infrastructures are present or being prepared,
(green field, extensions, refurbishment) and as broadband-ready.

possible to manage the Litespan-1540 from a centralised site
by means of Element Management and Network
Management Operation Systems.

4. Application in the
operator’s network 4. Application in the operator’s network
4.1 NB-Only networks
4.1 NB-only networks Copper has, traditionally been the basic material for wiring the
access network. The picture below describes a reference
traditional network, composed out of an exchange placed in the
central office, from where big bundled twisted pair cables leave
the Main Distribution Frame (MDF). These cables are routed to

the first Feeder Distribution Interface (FDI) from where another
smaller distribution takes place towar ds the Subscriber
Distribution Inter face (SDI). It is from this point on that the
twisted pair is routed towards the final subscriber.
Figure 4.1. Traditional access Network
Evolution trends show that Access Nodes, will take over much of
the functionality of the main exchanges by penetrating deeper
into the access network, providing the same functionality as the
main exchange in the flexibility points of the local loop network,
i.e. the FDI and SDI, extending the functionality at these points in
the network.

4.1.1. Replacement of old exchanges

Today, old small PTO exchanges can be replaced by access
products reusing the available cables in the access network. This
is done for mainly two reasons The old PTO exchange is unable
to provide new ser vices, e.g. ISDN BA, ISDN PRA or Leased
Line, ADSL functionality. These new services can then be offered
by the DLC. A second reason is that replacing the complete
copper network by a new fiber based network, is normally not
justified due to the high cost of installing this fiber network (cost
of the complete replacement of all the wiring, and cost for the
installation of the optical components of the fiber network) so a
DLC offering the benefit of a combined fiber/copper network is
optimal here.

4.1.2. Fiber to the feeder distribution interface

In case no replacement of the old exchange is planned,
Litespan-1540 can serve as a means to enhance the old plant with
new features. Optical fiber connections are used between the
exchange and the FDI point, allowing the network nodes to
connect to the exchange not only in star configurations, but also
by means of ring structures. At the same time, the FDI hosts a
number of line terminations that before were only present in the
exchange. From this feeder point, existing subscribers are served
directly by means of copper a/b wires, or via an optical link to the
curb (SDI point) and copper wires up to the home. In general, the

subscriber copper loop is reduced to what economically can be
motivated. As such, today, in most scenarios, the remaining last
mile copper wire will still be used as it is able to carry higher
bandwidths on shorter lengths.
Figure 4.2. Updating the Access Network with SDH technology
The Litespan-1540 can be used to replace small exchanges or
remote units, to suppor t the introduction of new facilities
(e.g. ISDN BA) in a service area or to provide new service mixes
(NB-ser vices + Leased Lines). In this application, the
Litespan-1540 covers the range of 60 to 2000 equivalent POTS
subscribers, handled by one or more V5.1 or V5.2 interfaces.

4.1.3. Green field application

The Litespan-1540 can be used as a pure DLC application for the
coverage of industrial or technological areas, where higher
penetrations of special NB and/or BB ser vices are probable to
occur.

4.2 Combined 4.2 Combined NB+BB networks

NB+BB networks The main application of the Litespan-1540, lies in its possibility to
offer NB and BB-services from the same platform. But depending
on when the BB-functionality is to be implemented, dif ferent
scenarios are supported by the Litespan-1540.

An upgradeable NB + BB network is a network that in the

beginning consists of basically a NB-network, with only
NB-ser vices. To make it possible to upgrade this NB-network
towards a true NB + BB network, the Litespan-1540 to be installed
in the NB-network, is prepared in hardware to offer BB services.
This means that at a later time in the life time of the network,
BB-services are added as the demand for these services takes up.
Basically this consists in putting in place the correct back panel
that provides the tracks for the BB-services. However, for cost
reasons there are variants that offer only NB-services.

The cost for allowing the Litespan-1540 to offer BB-services is

almost nothing (a special back panel). As long as there are no
BB-ser vices to be provided, no special controller, transport or
line-cards have to be equipped inside the system. It is only when
there is a demand for BB-services that the necessary hardware
has to be installed in the system.

Of course it is also possible to deploy the network, from day one,

with the necessary BB-functionality and increase the BB-capability
of the Litespan-1540, by adding boards as service takes up.

As was described in the NB only application of the Litespan-1540,

the same applications can be described here
• Replacement of old exchanges: As the functionality of the
exchange is not providing the necessar y BB-ser vices, the
Litespan-1540 can be collocated to or replace the old exchange.
• Fiber to the feeder distribution interface: It is possible to
built up the network in a ring or star configuration to provide
the new BB-services.
• Green field application.

4.3 Topologies The Litespan-1540 allows the operator to configure the network
element in different configurations. In this way it is possible to
always meet the network requirements of the operator.

The most generic configurations are illustrated in this chapter.

Other configuration are of course always possible, including
configurations where other Alcatel Products and even non Alcatel
Products can be introduced to connect them to the Litespan-1540.

Figure 4.5. Litespan-1540 in a ring configuration

One of the possible configuration where Litespan-1540 is used is
the point to point connection, where use is made of either SDH or
PDH transmission to connect exchange unit with the remote unit.
The next natural step of a point to point configuration is extending
the point to point network topology towards a star topology. Also
in this case use can be made of SDH or PDH transmission, which
are both supported by the Litespan-1540.

SDH-ring topologies are also supported with the Litespan-1540

SDH DLC application. And as final generic configuration, there is
the possibility of combining different transport mechanisms. This
is the case where the Litespan-1540 PDH application, is
subtending from the Litespan-1540 SDH application.

5.2.1. Narrowband Bus (NLC)

Narrowband services use the NLC bus. This is a bi-directional,
point to multi-point bus. It is a time division, scaleable bus with a
shared HDLC control channel. It operates at 102 Mb/s
(2x51 Mb/s).

Narrowband line cards and controllers are connected to this bus.

Each card can be configured to receive nx64 kb/s of the TDM
bus capacity.

5.2.2. Broadband Bus (IQ)

For low aggregate capacity data and broadband applications, a
shared 310 Mb/s (2x155 Mb/s) ATM bus is provided to each
universal line card slot. This bidirectional point to multi-point bus
is known as the Iq bus.

Multiple priorities are supported on this bus to guarantee QOS for

different services.

5.2.3. Server Bus

The server bus is a special purpose bus which is available in the
first four universal line card slots. This bus provides an additional
32 Mb/s (2x16 Mb/s) bandwidth for TDM ser ver pool
applications, such as Voice over IP and Frame Relay.

16 Alcatel Industry confidential 3DL 00586 AAAA TQZZA Ed.2

There are two types of MLS:
a) MLS-High End (MLS-he). This MLS is used as the main shelf
in case of SDH transport and/or in case that BB services are
required.
b) MLS- le + Extender. This type of MLS acts as the main shelf in
case of PDH transpor t and when only NB-ser vices are
required. It can also be used as an extension shelf of a main
shelf (being this MLS-he or MLS-le). The extension only
provides NB services.

A maximum of 4 subracks can be linked together into the same

Litespan-1540 system (one MLS-High end or one MLS-le used as
Main subrack and up to 3 MLS-le used as extensions). One MLS
cascade (up to four MLS's) is named MLSA (MLS Assembly).

The MLS is str uctured around three-bus systems: one for

broadband (IQ bus), one for narrow band (NLC bus) and one for
the server card. The shelf controllers generate the busses. Shelf
controllers for the main MLS are NEHC for all NB applications,
and AICC or AANC for broadband. The busses are terminated in
passive backpanel plug modules (IQTP and NLTP). Bus
termination voltages are generated on the shelf controller.

The line cards contain the subscriber line circuits. Two distinct
types can be applied: NB line cards connect to the NLC bus
containing NB only functionality, and BB line card connect to the
IQ bus containing BB only functionality. The narrowband /
broadband signals are also combined in the MLS, on a board that
is plugged into a line card position.

All cards in the MLS have on-board DC/DC converters, so that

cards requiring different voltages can be flexibly combined in the
same MLS.

In addition to line cards, the MLS can contain also: TARC (Craft
and alarm interface card), DURC (Dual ringer card), TACC (Test
access control card), and Transport cards (in order to support
fully integrated DLC applications, the MLS can also contain one
or more SDH or PDH transport cards). The transport cards have
dedicated slots in the MLS. However for some PDH
configurations the transport cards can be plugged in the same
slots that are used for the linecards.

The access equipment forming part of the default configuration is

auto-instantiated by the Litespan system at start up, and at system
restar t. The access equipment that is not par t of the default
configuration is declared by the OS/CT.

As explained before, there are two types of MLS (Multiservice
Line Shelf) which can be used at either the EU or RU.
• The MLS-High end - contains the element controller(s),
aggregate transmission towards the network side and a set of
multiservice line slots towards the customer or RU side.
• The MLS-le + Extender - contains extender board(s) and a set
of multiservice line slots. The MLS-le + Extender supports a
greater number of multi-service line slots than a MLS-High end
in order to provide maximum density.

The MLS comprises two parts; a card area and a connector area.

MLS Card Area

The main plug-in cards are equipped in this area. There are
dedicated positions for the following cards:
• Redundant Controller (2 positions)
• Redundant Broadband Controller (2 positions)
• Redundant Aggregate Transport (2 positions).

The remaining slots are universal line card positions, which can
be equipped with Line cards, Server cards (four slots only) or
Tributary Transport cards.

Connector Area
Front cabling access is provided for all cards. A termination
access adaptor is used to provide physical and electrical
adaptation to meet customer's requirements.

6.1.1. MLS High End (Broadband ready)

This is the star ting point for MLS definition. It contains the
necessar y hooks for BB integration (ADSL), as well as SDH
transpor t. The MLS-he (used as Main Subrack only) gives
NB+BB ser vices with separate controllers. The MLS-he Main
shelf is shown in the figure of the following figure:

– LIM's (12) + Controllers (4) + Aggregates (2) + TARC + TACC
+ DURC (2 slots wide). See later in this description the
functionality of these boards.

6.1.2. MLS low end for narrowband and extensions

This MLS is used in PDH applications of Litespan-1540 Family,
where Broadband Readiness is not needed and the cost penalty is
not acceptable. It is also used as Extension of MLS he in SDH
applications. The MLS le+Extender fits two Controller/Extender
Cards. In this way it can work as:
– Extension MLS for NB services of the previous MLS-he-Main.
– Main MLS for NB only services (non-SDH transport).
– Extension MLS for NB only ser vices, of another
MLS-le + Extender (used as Main MLS).

The MLS-le + Extender only support NB boards. Therefore, BB

services in MLS extensions are not possible.

The same MLS-le + Extender can be used for Main subrack

(housing the NB Central controller in dedicated pair of slots) and
for NB Extender subracks (housing the controllers of this
extension rack boards (NSEC) in dedicated pair of slots) whose
main subrack is MLS-he or MLS-le + Extender.

The following simplified rules are used in the dimensioning of the
MLS-le + Extensions:
– MLS-le as Main: LIM's (15) + Controllers (2) + Aggregates (2)
+ TARC + TACC + DURC (2 slots wide).
– If the Aggregate slots are used by DURC in MLS-le as Main,
two more slots are available for LIM cards.

DURC (2 slots wide).
– TARC slot is equipped only in MLS-le as Main, in MLS-le as
Extender this slot is not occupied.
– In MLS-le as Extender, Extender Controllers (NSEC) cards are

– Only one TACC is equipped per NE.

6.2 Overview of the 6.2 Overview of the different boards in the MLS
different boards in the MLS The boards that can be plugged in into the MLS are the following:

• Transport boards:
For SDH networks:
- Optical East and West STM-1 aggregates to inser t the
Litespan-1540 into an SDH ring, upgradeable to STM-4. Or the
SDH STM-1 point to point board.
For PDH networks:
- Optical transport: 16x2 Mb/s
- Electrical transport: 4x2 Mb/s with HDSL transport.
- Local interface: 16x2 Mb/s (G.703).
• Nar rowband controller: responsible to generating and
controlling the Narrowband bus.
• Broadband controller offering Inverse Multiplexing on ATM
(IMA) with 2 Mb/s output or offering a STM-1 interface.
• A ringer board that will provide the necessary ringing function
for the POTS-cards.
• A local interface card, to connect the Craft Terminal and that
will manage all the alarms.
• The different NB- and BB-line cards offering the variety of
interfaces towards the end-user:
- POTS cards with high modularity (30 Lines/card) and low
modularity (16 lines/card).
- ISDN BA cards (current and voltage feeding) with 2B/1Q
and 4B/3T line coding, also with high modularity (16
lines/card) and low modularity (8 lines/card)
- ISDN PRA cards.
- Digital Leased line car ds for subrate (<64 kb/s),
nx64 kb/s, and 2 Mb/s digital leased line services.
- Analogue Leased Line card that of fer two or four wire
support, and optionally include E&M signalling over 2 or 4
wires.
- ADSL and POTS splitter cards.
- Server boards: Frame Relay Server card. This board extends
the basic functionality of the Litespan-1540 without affecting
the rest of the hardware and with limited impact on the
software.
• It is also possible to plug in a Test Card, to test subscriber lines
and to test the line circuits of the different line cards.

20 Alcatel Industry confidential 3DL 00586 AAAA TQZZA Ed.2

In addition it is possible to extend the MLS with up to three other
MLSs. These extension MLSs are connected to the Main MLS by
using Extender Cards that extend the Narrowband bus. By doing
so the capacity of the total configuration can be extended to
support up to 2000 Eq. POTS users (see later chapter on available
equipment modularity).

The different boards used inside the MLS, all contain there own
DC/DC converters, so that it is possible to flexibly combine cards
in the same MLS, without having to change anything on the
powering scheme of the MLS.

6.2.1. Transport cards

From the transmission point of view, the Litespan-1540 can be
seen as an SDH DLC or as a PDH DLC. Just inserting the correct
transmission card gives you the SDH or PDH capabilities of the
DLC.

6.2.1.1. SYNTH1 - STM-1 SDH NT Transport

For SDH applications, an optical SDH line transmission system is
used. It can drop and inser t traf fic in a bi-directional STM-1
stream thus providing access to SDH networks. The Optical STM-1
signal from the SYNTH1 complies with ITU-T G.957 and the SDH
frame complies to ITU-T G.707.

An STM-4 board is foreseen for a future release.

The Optical modules (electrical or mixed interfaces modules are

also available) can be inserted in the slots located at the front
panel of the board within the 25 mm pitch width.

The optical STM-1 signal is handled by an optical module that

converts a G.957 optical signal into an electrical one. The E/O
modules can be changed on the board in a flexible way without
affecting any other hardware function, allowing to cover all the
marketing requirements for the various types of Optical fiber and
distances to be covered:
• Short Haul S-1.1.
• Long Haul L-1.1, L-1.2, L-1.1JE, L-1.2JE.

An STM-1 electrical interface is planned for a future release.

The aggregate card performs all the required SDH functions:

• Transport Terminal Function (TTF).
• Higher Order Assembler (HOA).
• High order Path Connection (HPC).
• Low order Path Connection (LPC).
• Synchronization.
• DCC channel extraction and routing.
• Power supply.

The Aggregate card provides the equipment master clock T0 at

622 mHz that is delivered to the Broadband/Narrowband shelf
controllers.

3DL 00586 AAAA TQZZA Ed.2 Alcatel Industry confidential 21

The SYNTH1 is made up of two separate parts: The Mother board
and the Control board. The motherboard is the main PCB board
and includes all the SDH circuitry, the on-board power supply, the
backpanel modules, the connectors for the control board and the
Line modules interface. The SDH processing, performed by
means of the transport ASICs, is located on this part of the board.

The Control board is a daughter PCB board where the EC

(Equipment Controller) and SC (Shelf Controller) functions are
located.

SYNTH1 is powered by two DC/DC converter modules, which

produce the needed 3.3 V, and 5 V directly from the system
Battery. 5 V positive is needed for the Optical modules and Mass
memory/flash card op-operations while the 3.3 V is used by the
Control Board and mother board circuitr y. A step/down
converter from 3.3 V to 2.5 V is required to power the ASICs.

6.2.1.2. EOTC - PDH Optical Transport

The EOTC is an optical transport card for carrying 16 x 2 Mb/s
using a standard PDH multiplexing hierarchy over a single fiber. In
addition, it provides local 16 x 2 Mb/s G.703 electrical interfaces.

There are two HW variants that cover the applications of this

board:
• In the Exchange Unit (EU) the EOTC-A (one optical port, and
16 x E1s G.703 ports)
• In the Remote Unit (RU) the EOTC-B (one optical port and a
direct electrical interface to the NEHC)
• In RU the EOTC-A (one optical port and 16 x E1s G.703 ports
interface to the standard transmission equipment.

The traffic from the optical interface can be routed via the NLC
bus or to the external electrical connections as required.

6.2.1.3. HLTC - HDSL line card

For PDH electrical transport, Litespan-1540 makes use of a HDSL
board that supports the transport of up to 4 x 2 Mb/s over 2 or 4
wires towards the exchange unit.

Both the electrical HDSL (HLTC) and optical (EOTC) transport

boards can additionally be used as line cards to connect
subtending units onto a host Litespan-1540.

The main characteristics of the HDSL board are:

• Modularity: 4 lines/board (1 pair) or 2 lines/board (2 pairs).
• Allows the connection with remote 2 Mb/s interfaces using an
HDSL line termination function. The LT function offers also the
possibility to power feed the remote Network Termination in
the customer premises.
• The choice of services provided by the NT are:
- 2 Mb/s structured according to the ITU-T Rec. G.704. In this
case it can contain .
- nx64 kb/s service.
- Primary Rate Access according to ETSI Rec. ETS 300 233.
- 2 Mb/s G.703 transparent (local G.703).

22 Alcatel Industry confidential 3DL 00586 AAAA TQZZA Ed.2

- 2 Mb/s unstructured.
• It can be used as transport card for a remote unit where a twin
card is used as empty.
• Transmission: symmetrical on two or one copper pair line.
• Board modularity is 2 HDSL interfaces on 2 pairs or 4 HDSL
interface on a single pair.
• Line rate: 2320 kb/s (single pair) or 1160 kb/s (two pair) using
2B1Q line coding.
• Payload: 2048 kb/s or nx64 kb/s.
• Echo cancellation between upstream and downstream.
• Regenerator can optionally be inserted between LT and NT.
• Optional power feeding of regenerator or remote NT (not
both).
• OAM capabilities: failure detection, pair identification, CRC
error detection, Loopbacks.

6.2.2. Controllers
The Litespan-1540 uses 2 types of controllers. A narrowband
controller, which can be adapted depending on the transmission
means (SDH or PDH) and a broadband controller. The
broadband controller exists in different variants to offer Inverse
Multiplexing on ATM (IMA) with a capacity of 4 x 2 Mb/s
towards the network side or a direct STM-1 transpor t of
ATM-cells in a VC-4 container.

As technology will evolve also an integration of the Narrowband

and Broadband controller is envisaged, so that not 2 controllers
have to be equipped but an integrated controller handling both
NB and BB traffic will control the complete network element.

In addition to the narrowband and broadband controllers the

possibility exist in providing server cards, which can be plugged
in onto the narrowband bus and/or broadband bus of the system.
Examples of this are a Frame Relay or a Voice over IP Server
Card (only Frame Relay Server will be available in the timeframe
covered by this document).

All server and controller cards can be optionally implemented in a

redundant fashion so as to provide a hitless switch over when one
of the boards would be failing.

6.2.2.1. NEHC - Litespan-1540 Narrowband Controller

The NEHC is the system controller as well as the narrowband
controller. As such, it is the master of the narrowband bus (NLC), and
is responsible for NLC timeslot allocation. All the narrowband line
cards are connected through this Narrowband bus to the controller.
The controller is also connected to the transport interface. This can
be an SDH or a PDH transpor t inter face, depending on the
environment in which the Litespan-1540 will be operating.

The NEHC also forms the interface between the Litespan-1540

NE and the centralized management system (OS) through a
standardized Q3 interface.

3DL 00586 AAAA TQZZA Ed.2 Alcatel Industry confidential 23

The main functions of the Narrowband controller consist out of
the following:
• Inter facing with the T ranspor t cards for relaying the
Narrowband traffic and the management channels to control
the Litespan-1540. If the Litespan-1540 is to work in a SDH or
PDH environment, it is only a matter of changing the controller
daughter board that perform the SDH transport front end.
• System clock distribution for systems using PDH transport.
• Q3 network management interface to the Element Manager.
Both X.25 and Ethernet interfaces are available.
• Craft Terminal interface functions. The physical connection is
provided via the TARC.
• It acts as the narrowband signalling processor and thus
terminates the dif ferent signalling protocols with LE for
switched services: mirror, V 5.1, V 5.2, V 3.
• Assigns the Narrowband bus time slots for all connections
including those between the transport side and the User Port
of a line card. It realises the switching and grooming of any
aggregate n x DS0 channel to any tributary n x DS0 channel. It
assigns Time Slots arriving from the transport side onto the
Narrowband bus and to the correct Line card.
• For ISDN subscribers, this boar d also per for ms the
termination of layer 2.1 (HDLC).
• Master database stored in non-volatile Flash memory.
• Non-volatile storage of all application software of all units using
downloadable software.
• It allows the TU-12 relaying towards the Line Card positions and in
this way it is possible to extend the TU-12 up to the customer
premises (not planned for the releases described in the document).
• It interfaces with Litespan-1540 extension panels.

6.2.2.2. Litespan-1540 Broadband controller

The Broadband Network Termination forms the inter face
between the Litespan-1540 and a broadband backbone network. It
performs the transport system termination and the ATM layer
handling. Fur ther more it concentrates the management
information of the connected ADSL line and network termination.
Different variants exist, depending on the interface that needs to
be offered towards the broadband network:
• based on ATMF IMA V1.0, with a load capacity of up to
4x2 Mb/s.
• via STM-1 at 155.52 Mb/s inter face containing direct
ATM-cell in VC-4.

Both cards perform the same functionality on the ATM-cells:

• ATM cell delineation.
• HEC checking/calculation (+ single bit correction).
• (de) scrambling, cell extraction/insertion.
• F4/F5 OAM flow support (AIS, RDI detection + appropriate
action).

- Active POTS splitter the active filters are required for some
complex line impedance, to guarantee a high return loss.
Also to improve the performance of the ADSL by bringing
down the minimum modem frequency, active filters are
required.
• The splitter characteristics depend on the local line
characteristics which var y from countr y to countr y.
Compatibility with a particular type of line has therefore to be
checked case by case.
• Transparent for all signals within the voice band, including DC.
This includes the support of DC feed (including Fleeting Test
Reversal), ringing, DTMF, voice, facsimile, V.34 modems
(28.8 kb/s) and 50 Hz metering. Decadic dialling is also
supported and the voice frequency path is active when the
telephone is on hook (this can be used for Calling Line
Identification). Unbalanced feed is supported. The POTS splitter
is transparent to the driving current for pay phones (35 mA).

• Out of band signals (e.g. 8 kHz signalling, 12/16 kHz metering

or 15 kHz mono music) are not supported.

6.2.5. Server Cards

The Litespan-1540 suppor ts the concept of ser ver cards for
providing global resource functions within the MLS. Server cards
may be equipped in the four left universal slots of the MLS. As
well as being able to access NLC, Iq busses, these slots can also
access the 2x32 Mb/s TDM Server bus.

6.2.6. Auxiliary Line Cards
To suppor t the NB and BB line cards some auxiliar y and
sometimes necessary boards can/have to be plugged in into the
Litespan-1540.

6.2.6.1. DURC - Ringer line card

This board foresees in the necessar y ringing voltage to be
superimposed on the POTS lines, delivering the high-voltage sine
wave to cause a telephone set to ring. It is a non-intelligent
(i.e. without OBC and communications channel) unit that can be
housed in any line card position. The board implements an on
board 1+1 redundancy (two separate and independent ring
generators) and is placed inside the MLS.

Ringing characteristics of this board:

• The ring signal frequency is selectable: 16.66 Hz, 20 Hz, 25 Hz
and 50 Hz (± 10%).
• The ring signal AC-amplitude is selectable: 60 Vrms to
100 Vrms (± 5%).
• The ring signal DC-bias voltage is selectable: 48 V ± 5% or
60 V ± 5%.

6.2.6.2. TACC - Line test card

The line test card described here is intended to test the equipment,
lines and line circuits directly connected to the subscribers. The
line test card is connected to the test bus on the back panel. To test
a line circuit of a line card, this line card is connected to the test
bus by means of relays, located on each line card.
Test functions supported among others:
• Outward tests.
- Equipment switch-of f prior to resistance and capacitance
measurements.
- Foreign Voltage Test (DC/AC).

6.2.6.3. TARC - Alarm card

The main function performed by Alarm card is to collect alarms
coming from internal or external equipment, drive the rack lamps
and the Telemetry alarm extension according to information of
O&M protocol.

The alarm card consists of the following blocks:

• On-board controller.
• Input registers, collecting the following issues:
- Alarms of the transport interface/distribution cards.
- Alarms of the power supplies of the MLS.
- Status about internal temperature.
- In outdoor cabinet, alarms from rectifier, fans, heaters, and
doors.
• Output registers, controlling:
- Reset line to the line and transport interface cards.
- Alarm extension (in indoor cabinets) in order to transport 3
alarms by means of connection to ground contacts: one for
urgent alar m, one for non-urgent alar m, and one for
acknowledged alarm. The top lamp is managed by the Top
Rack Unit (that selects alarm by means of an OR function)
using these alarms extension.
- Front led drivers indicating the presence of alarms.
- External commands. Though this commands will be possible
to handle and control fans, heaters, rectifier and batteries.
• Input/Output register which is selected:
- In output for isolating MLS cards from the upstream data
- In input for detecting MLS card presence.

The management of the alarms is done through 2 switches placed

in the front panel. The first one is a switch with two unstable
positions: one for attending alarms and other for led checking.
When the user pushes in the attended alarms position, all the
alarms will be attended (it provokes the switch off of the alarm
LEDs and the suppression of the contribution for the activation of
the Top Rack Unit lamps, among other things).

The second switch has two stable positions: one is the operational
position and the other the cut off alarm position (it provokes the
switch of f of the alar m LEDs and the suppression of the
contribution for the activation of the Top Rack Unit lamps, among
other things).

The Alarms, according to the severity, are classified in:

• Critical: Critical alarm. It is indicated in the card LEDs as
Urgent alarm.
• Major: Major alarm. It is indicated in the card LEDs as Urgent
alarm.

3DL 00586 AAAA TQZZA Ed.2 Alcatel Industry confidential 31

• Minor: Minor alarm. It is indicated in the card LEDs as Not
Urgent alarm.
• Warning: Warning alarm. It is indicated in the card LEDs as
Not Urgent alarm.
• Cleared: Alarm has disappeared.

There are a lot of alarms in the DLC, that can be classified as:
• Environmental alarms, with major severity, and caused, among
other causes by:
- Open upper or lower door.
- Battery in process of discharging.
- Fail in the power.
- Fail in some distribution fusible.
- High temperature.
- Fail in the ventilation system.
• Equipment alarms, with severity depending on the origin of the
alarm, and caused by numerous specific cards errors. Some
causes, among many others:
- Card missing.
- Card mismatch.
- RAM fail.
- EPROM fail.
- Clock fail.
- Feeding fail.
• Processing error, caused by, just to mention some of them:
- Software load error.
- Software congestion.
- Code exception.
- Command exception.
• In the same way, in the central office side equipment, the
alarms are caused by:
- Card missing.
- Card mismatch.
- Software fail.
- Different tributaries fail.
- Loss of signal.
- Fail in the power.
- Etc.

6.2.6.4. NSEC - Narrowband Shelf Extender Card

This card is used to connect the Main MLS with the extender
MLS. It mounts in slot 2 of the Extension Panel. A redundant
NSEC may optionally be equipped in slot 4.

6.3.6. ADSL NT
The ADSL modem exists in three variants:
• Standar d ADSL: A rate adaptive ANSI T1.413 issue 2
standard compliant ADSL modem for absolute maximum
performance on ordinary POTS lines. With addition of a single
POTS splitter at each side of the line simultaneous POTS and
ADSL ser vice can be guaranteed without any interaction
between the two. It allows a maximum data rate of 8 Mb/s
downstream and 1 Mb/s upstream on the shorter loops and
allows lower speed service on the longest loops (up to 25.000
feet on 24 AWG).
• Universal ADSL: A UADSL version of the modem that allows
easier installation at the subscriber's pr emises and
simultaneous POTS and ADSL service without a central POTS
splitter or new in-house wiring. Compared to the standard
ADSL this gives reduced maximum achievable data rates. The
name “Universal ADSL” refers to Universal ADSL Working
Group where this technology was defined as an extension to
ANSI T1.413 Standard ADSL.

34 Alcatel Industry confidential 3DL 00586 AAAA TQZZA Ed.2

• Euro-ADSL: A version of the modem that can be used both on
ISDN and on POTS lines, with a slightly reduced ADSL
per formance. This modem technology fits the needs of
operators that have a large penetration of ISDN in their access
network and that choose to offer the same ADSL service to
POTS and ISDN subscribers. This ADSL variant is being
standardised by ETSI-TM6 as an extension to ANSI T1.413
Standard ADSL. As it's application exists mainly in Europe it
will further be referred to as Euro-ADSL.

At the remote side (ATU-R) the dif ferent CPE devices are
available with any of these modem variants. Moreover the UADSL
ATU-R's can be upgraded to Standar d ADSL by simply
downloading a software upgrade.
• Line Interface.
- Twisted Pair, ATM via DMT, up to 8 Mb/s downstream,
1 Mb/s Upstream.
• Customer Interface.
- ATMF 25.6.
- 10BaseT Bridged.
- 10BaseT PPTP.
- ATMF & 10BaseT.
- PC NIC (PC-based Network Interface Card).
• Other interfaces.
- 220 VAC Mains.
• Diagnosis.
- The ADSL NT supports several modes of automatic rate
selection and rate adaptation for both directions of the
link.
- At initialisation the ADSL system measures the maximum
achievable bit rate, with predeter mined margin, and
initialises at either the maximum possible rate, or the
maximum rate set through the service management.

The NT will automatically circumvent disturbers on the line and

re-use the undisturbed channels in order to provide maximum
required capacity.

8.2 Litespan-1540 housing The Litespan-1540 Main MLS and Extender MLS can be arranged
and equipped to fit a variety of configurations, including CO-located
(Indoor) and Remote (Outdoor) locations. The Litespan-1540
architecture allows flexible dimensioning of the access network,
optimising the use of both narrowband and broadband switching
resources as needed by every deployment area. So it is possible to
install configurations that are purely narrowband oriented or install
configurations with a mix of narrowband and broadband services.

Table 8.3. Maximum capacities for Litespan-1540 PDH compact DLC

The previous tables are only given for information purposes.

Currently, the only available housings are:
• Indoor rack with up to three MLS. Four MLS seem to be
unfeasible due to thermal and cabling reasons.
• Outdoor cabinet. There are two versions with 1 and 2 MLS.

8.2.1. Outdoor cabinet

Litespan-1540 can be located at the FDI, typically in outdoors
applications. The cabinet also contains the MDF, voltage rectifiers
and converters. Battery backup facilities are also available.

The cabinet consists of three distinct areas

• Electronic area, that contains the Main MLS and the Extension
MLS for the different configurations.
• Battery area, for the battery backup.
• MDF area, where also the battery charger, power switch and
feeding are located. It is here that the different twisted pairs
and cables enter the cabinet.

The MDF is a modular part in the cabinet design. This means

that it is possible to dimension the MDF capacity with an
additional MDF area.

This modularity is foreseen to provide service to a wide range of

narrowband/broadband mixes. E.g. using the high capacity
POTS card in a pure narrowband application will allow to put up
to 900 subscribers in two MLS (1 Main MLS + 1 Ext. MLS)
configuration. If broadband services have to be provided, due to
the lower ADSL-card modularity, the number of subscriber that
can be connected to a two MLS configuration will drop, and then
there is no need for the extra MDF.

All the cabinets described below, comply to the following

standards
• EN 60950, EN 41003 - Safety.
• ETSI 300 386 - 1 EMC.
• IEC 144/63 (Protection Level IP55 in the Electronic area).
• IEC 144/63 (Protection level IP54 in the MDF area).
• IEC 144/63 (Protection level IP53 in the battery box).
• ETS 300 019 Class 4.1E.
• ETS 301 169-1.

40 Alcatel Industry confidential 3DL 00586 AAAA TQZZA Ed.2

Other characteristics are
• Water protection from the base of the cabinet (300 mm).
• Optional heaters for low temperature start-up and to maintain
the batteries efficiency can be installed.
• Electronic and batteries room with frontal access.
• Each area (electronic, batteries and MDF) is lock
independently.
• Open doors alarm detection.
• Anti-vandalism protection.
Fans are used for outdoor housing to prevent thermal build-up.

9.3 Powering distribution

9.3 Powering distribution The boards designed for both Main MLS and Extender MLS,
derive the internal low or high voltage(s) directly from battery
voltage (-20 V to -72 V) by means of on-board power converters.
Power consumption:
• per MLS 205 W at 0,2 Erlang 240 POTS equipped.

9.3.1. Mains powering

When 48 VDC powering is not available, an AC/DC converter may
be equipped in the system in order to provide the 48 VDC from
mains 220 VAC. The equipment contains also a batter y pack in
order to allow a working autonomy when mains is switched off.

44 Alcatel Industry confidential 3DL 00586 AAAA TQZZA Ed.2

This AC/DC conver ter provides one single output voltage of
54.5 VDC. One or more converters in parallel connection together
with a maintenance-free lead acid battery will constitute the power
plant of the Access Node.

The main characteristics of the AC/DC converter are:

• Nominal input voltage range between 110 and 230 VAC.
• 3 wire input line.
• Output voltage at 25° C: 54.3 ± 1.3%. Nominal output current is
4.6 A.
• Alarms:
- Mains failure alarm. If mains voltage is not high enough to
allow output voltage regulation.
- Under-voltage alarm. If the conver ter creates an output
voltage below 46 VDC ± 4%.
- Low battery voltage alarm. If the battery voltage is less than
45 VDC ± 3%.

9.3.2. Battery
The batter y pack is housed in the bottom part of the outdoor
cabinet, in a water proof box. The box is temperature protected to
avoid extra charge voltage supply.
• Battery breaker circuit and battery controller:
- Automatic battery detachment below 42.5 VDC.
- Reverse polarity battery pack protection.
- Battery discharge alarm at 46 VDC.
- Battery single element voltage control.
• Battery charger:
- Galvanic isolation transformer.
- In-rush current limit circuit.
