Introduction to structural integrity

management: Online

This online course explains the concepts behind

structural integrity management (SIM), focusing
on the North Sea experience of fixed offshore
structures, but will also touch on some aspects of
floating structures.

SHARE:

Course description
The course aims to provide an understanding of a SIM system and how it is defined;
information about the activities and key issues; an overview of the roles and
responsibilities of the key stakeholders, along with the importance of effective
communication between them.

Learning objective
After attending the training the participants will have an overview of:

 Why structural integrity management is important and how it is facilitated;

 What the requirements for and components of an effective SIM system are;
 Who the key stakeholders are, their roles and responsibilities and how they
interact;
 The activities required and an understanding of their scopes, execution and
outcomes;
 The key issues that a structural integrity management system seeks to
address.

Target group
The main target audience is engineers working within the offshore oil and gas
industry. This course is suitable for personnel seeking a general knowledge and
overview of structural integrity management, including those tasked with
management of the SIM process as part of an operator’s asset management team.

About the Fixed and Floating Structure Team

The Fixed and Floating Structures Team, based in London and Aberdeen, comprises
a group of highly qualified civil, structural and mechanical engineers, and naval
architects who are recognized industry specialists. Our work includes the inspection
management and structural analysis of offshore oil and gas fixed and floating
structures, as well as offshore renewable structures. This practical experience
allows the members of the unit to deliver high quality and relevant training based
on practical experience.

Structural Integrity Assessment and Practical Application of BS 7910 Procedures for the Assessment
of Flaws in Metallic Structures

Is it for me?
Structural, civil, maintenance, pipeline, materials, welding, inspection and plant engineers including
those responsible for maintaining welded equipment and structures, managing the integrity of
ageing structures and optimizing asset performance.

Key features of the course:

 Introduces the concepts of fitness-for-purpose and engineering critical assessment (ECA),

using a mixture of lectures, informal discussion, quizzes, videos and software exercises to
reinforce learning

 Focuses on the practical applications of fracture mechanics and covers brittle and ductile
fracture, plastic collapse, fatigue crack growth and stress corrosion cracking

 Highlights fracture and fatigue procedures in BS 7910, with an emphasis on how they are
applied to welded structures

 Discusses the assessment of circumferential flaws in pipeline girth welds

 Covers a range of relevant subjects related to BS 7910, e.g. failure case studies, non-
destructive testing (inspection), materials properties, fracture toughness testing

 Provides practical training in fracture and fatigue assessments using CrackWISE software

 Provides engineers with a firm foundation in the application of BS 7910 to the assessment of
flaws using fitness-for-purpose methods
