Tutorial Ch04

This document contains multiple physics problems involving forces, kinematics, and friction. Problem 85 asks about the maximum acceleration a man can give to an airplane by pulling on a cable attached to it at a 9 degree angle above the horizontal, given the man and airplane masses and the coefficient of static friction. Solving this problem requires considering the forces of static friction and tension in the cable at the angle provided.

Chapter 4

3. Two horizontal forces, ⃑⃑⃑ and ⃑⃑⃑ , are on a box, but only ⃑⃑⃑ is shown in the drawing.
⃑⃑⃑ can point either to the right or to the left. The box moves only along the x axis.
There is no friction between the box and the surface. Suppose that ⃑⃑⃑ = +9.0N and the
mass of the box is 3.0 kg. Find the magnitude and direction ⃑⃑⃑ of when the
acceleration of the box is (a) +5.0 m/s2, (b) -5.0 m/s2, and (c) 0 m/s2.

9. ssm Two forces ⃑⃑⃑⃑ and ⃑⃑⃑⃑ are applied to an object whose mass is 8.0 kg. The
larger force is ⃑⃑⃑⃑ . When both forces point due east, the object’s acceleration has a
magnitude of 0.50 m/s2. However, when points due east and points due west, the
acceleration is 0.40 m/s2, ⃑⃑⃑⃑ due east. Find (a) the magnitude of ⃑⃑⃑⃑ and (b) the
magnitude of ⃑⃑⃑⃑ .

11. Only two forces act on an object (mass = 3.00 kg), as in the drawing. Find the
magnitude and direction (relative to the x axis) of the acceleration of the object.

* 17. A space probe has two engines. Each generates the same amount of force when
fired, and the directions of these forces can be independently adjusted. When the
engines are fired simultaneously and each applies its force in the same direction, the
probe, starting from rest, takes 33 s to travel a certain distance. How long does it take
to travel the same distance, again starting from rest, if the engines are fired
simultaneously and the forces that they apply to the probe are perpendicular?

39. ssm A 60.0-kg crate rests on a level floor at a shipping dock. The coefficients of
static and kinetic friction are 0.760 and 0.410, respectively. What horizontal pushing
force is required to (a) just start the crate moving and (b) slide the crate across the

dock at a constant speed?

45. ssm A 8.00-kg box is sliding across the horizontal floor of an elevator. The
coefficient of kinetic friction between the box and the floor is 0.310. Determine the
kinetic frictional force that acts on the box when the elevator is (a) stationary, (b)
accelerating upward with an acceleration whose magnitude is 1.50 m/s2, and (c)
accelerating downward with an acceleration whose magnitude is 1.50 m/s2.

* 61. The drawing shows box 1 resting on a table, with box 2

resting on top of box 1. A massless rope passes over a massless,
frictionless pulley. One end of the rope is connected to box 2, and
the other end is connected to box 3. The weights of the three
boxes are W1 = 60 N, W2 = 43 N, and W3 = 30 N. Determine the
magnitude of the normal force that the table exerts on box 1.

71. ssm A 15-g bullet is fired from a rifle. It takes 2.50 x 10-3 s for the bullet to travel
the length of the barrel, and it exits the barrel with a speed of 715 m/s. Assuming that
the acceleration of the bullet is constant, find the average net force exerted on the
bullet.

77. A car is towing a boat on a trailer. The driver starts from rest and accelerates to a
velocity of +15 m/s in a time of 30 s. The combined mass of the boat and trailer is 380
kg. The frictional force acting on the trailer can be ignored. What is the tension in the
hitch that connects the trailer to the car?

* 85. An 85-kg man plans to tow a 109 000-kg airplane along a runway by pulling
horizontally on a cable attached to it. Suppose that he instead attempts the feat by
pulling the cable at an angle of 9.0o above the horizontal. The coefficient of static
friction between his shoes and the runway is 0.77. What is the greatest acceleration
the man can give the airplane? Assume that the airplane is on wheels that turn without
any frictional resistance.

91. In the drawing, the rope and the pulleys are massless, and there is no friction. Find
(a) the tension in the rope and (b) the acceleration of the 10.0-kg block. (Hint: The
larger mass moves twice as far as the smaller mass.)
