Listening transcript:
Hi everyone. Today's topic is ‘somewhere to live’. I want to talk about somewhere that is not the
coldest and not the hottest place – but the furthest away. In the South Atlantic Ocean, there’s an
island. Its name is Tristan da Cunha, and this island is inhabited – that means that people live
there. But Tristan da Cunha is very far from anywhere else. It really is in the middle of nowhere.
Pre-IELTS 2 Adults- Lesson 2

The nearest place is South Africa, 2,816 kilometres away . South America is 3,360 kilometres, to
the east.
And how many people live on this island? Currently, the population is less than 300. There are
around 80 families, and there are only eight surnames here. They speak English, but it's a strange
form of English, maybe because these people live so far away.
So, would you like to live on this place? There are many advantages. First of all, life is very
simple. Everyone knows each other, and there’s no crime on the island. So, I imagine it’s
completely safe to leave your car or house door unlocked. No one will take anything. It’s also
very clean. You can drink water from the rivers. I think this all sounds great – how often can we
do this in other countries? Finally, I think there are many things to see – mountains, a volcano –
and it’s a good place if you like watching birds. In many ways, Tristan da Cunha is a beautiful
place, and I think that people feel really free here.
I'd also like to talk about disadvantages. The only jobs there are related to farming and fishing.
It’s difficult to leave the island – only a few boats coming here every year. And the journey from
South Africa takes six days. I believe this makes a lot of people lonely. Also, it isn't a really
modern place. Television only arrived in 2001, and there is very little internet access. And you
shouldn't expect things like cinemas or coffee shops or shopping malls. There aren't any.
So, in summary, I think that Tristan da Cunha is a very interesting place to visit, if you have lots
of time and money. However, I don't think it would be easy to live there. In my opinion, there are
more disadvantages than advantages. If you want a very simple, easy life, and if you want to feel
free, then that's good. But if you want to meet a lot of people, and have a modern lifestyle, then I
think it would be a very bad experience. But what do you think? Would you like to live
somewhere simple and free?
