Topic 6 Linear Equations

This document discusses linear equations and simultaneous linear equations. It begins by defining linear equations in one and two variables. It then covers expressing and solving single linear equations, including using brackets and collecting like terms. Finally, it discusses simultaneous linear equations, describing cases where they have unique solutions, no solutions, or infinite solutions, and shows examples solved using substitution and elimination methods.

LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES
Linear equation in two variables is a linear equation that
has:
two variables
power of each variable is one
Linear equation in two variables can be written in the
general form of:
ax + by = c

SOLVING LINEAR EQUATIONS
An equation is formed when an expression is put equal to a
number or another expression.
The solution to an equation is the value of the variable
that makes the equation true.
Example 2
Solve 3x - 5 = 16.
SOLVING LINEAR EQUATIONS
When we have an equation that contains BRACKETS, we
need to multiply out the brackets and then solve the
resulting equation.
Example 3
Solve the equation 5(x + 3) = 25
SOLVING LINEAR EQUATIONS
An alternative method is to divide by the number outside
the brackets.
Example 4
Solve the equation 3(2x - 7) = 15
SOLVING LINEAR EQUATIONS
When a letter (or variable) appears on both sides of an
equation, collect all the terms containing the variable on
one side (usually at the left - hand side of the equation).
Example 5
Solve the equation 5x + 4 = 3x + 10.

Example 6
Solve the equation 3(2x + 5) = 2(2 - x) + 2.
