ELASTOMERIC BEARING
Elastomeric Bearings are flexible support points used in the construction of viaducts and bridges. Elastomeric bearings may be either plain (consisting of elastomer only) or laminated (consisting of alternate individual layers of elastomer and internal laminates)
This custom-moulded product is manufactured with 100% rubber for plain elastomeric bearing pads or made up of alternating rubber layers and steel plates for laminated elastomeric bearing pads. The addition of an external Teflon layer, together with a polished stainless steel plate, converts this product to a sliding bearing

This is a fabric reinforced product manufactured to an AASHTO specification, typically used as a simple structural bearing with or without the addition of a PTFE slide surface and polished stainless steel plate. Features are that small pads can typically carry 10 MPa, a stress in excess of plain un-reinforced bearing pads, for such structures as pedestrian bridges and other less sophisticated structures
Specification
Is manufactured to AASHTO specification 18.10.2, fifteenth edition, and MIL specification MIL-C-882E where applicable
Applications
Particularly suitable for the fixed end of simply supported structures such as pedestrian bridges where rotation and load centering is required, where space is restricted, and typically all expansion / contraction is taken at the other end using identical product but modified for translation.
Elastomeric Bearings are composed of multiple laminates of elastomer material separated by steel reinforcing. The overall size of the bearing, the number and thickness of laminates are designed in accordance to the requirement of Load to be transferred. A bearing consists of rubber layers separated by vulcanized steel plates. A rubber cover is fitted around this assembly. Natural rubber or Neoprene rubber is used for the layers. Natural rubber is not too sensitive to changes in temperature and shows only slight growth in deformation, over the period of deformation at a constant load (low creep). The hardness most common used in civil engineering applications is approximately 50 - 60 Shore A. Neoprene rubber is most often used for the cover. Neoprene rubber is highly resistant against ozone, ageing, UV and chemical effects.
