ABSTRACT
This study aimed to explore and describe the experiences by Senior High

School Students of Castor Z. Conception Memorial National High School on

their participation in sports activities. In a qualitative approach particularly,

the phenomenological method was used to investigate the question, which was

used in the interviews with Senior High School Students. Five (5) participants

involved in the study were chosen through convenience sampling in which they

had highly met the criteria established by the researchers. The procedures in

conducting the study included various combinations of tools and literal

sources such as photo documentation and voice records during the face-to-

face interview wherein structured interview guide questions were utilized. It

was conducted at Castor Z. Conception Memorial National High School during

the 2nd semester of the School Year 2022-2023. The findings revealed that

many students had learned new things and improved themselves upon the

activity but had also encountered some problems. However, they were still able

to resolve those problems and finish the activity successfully. Therefore, sports

participation was an effective learning tool for every student to learn and

prepare them for the future. Thus, it is strongly recommended that the school

administration continue holding programs that can help the students improve

their physical and mental health and enhance their sports skills. They should

have provided more facilities to have an area where athletes could practice and

perform comfortably. We strongly recommend that the school administration

should start hiring a more qualified, experienced, and professional individual

with an exemplary track record in the field of training, in order to ensure a

marked improvement in the overall training efficacy and the subsequent

trainees. A greater number of students within the school should be actively

encouraged to engage in regular physical activity.

Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Situational Analysis

Physical activity is a crucial component of a healthy lifestyle, with

numerous long-term benefits for physical and mental well-being. Regular

exercise can lower anxiety and blood pressure, enhance sleep quality, boost

mood and energy levels, and provide opportunities for socialization and

enjoyment. However, global statistics reveal that physical inactivity is a

significant risk factor for non-communicable diseases, causing millions of

deaths each year. In the Eastern Mediterranean Region alone, levels of physical

inactivity range from 30% to 70%.

Engaging in sports activities has been widely acknowledged as an

effective means to promote physical fitness, enhance cognitive abilities, and

improve mental health outcomes. Despite this, there is a lack of research

specifically examining the physical and mental benefits of sport participation

among senior high school students.

Sport participation offers opportunities for social interaction, teamwork,

and personal growth, which can positively influence emotional well-being.

Being part of a sports team fosters a sense of belonging, self-esteem, and self-

confidence, while also providing an outlet for stress relief and emotional

expression. By examining variables such as self-esteem, self-efficacy, stress

levels, and emotional regulation, this study was explore the impact of sports on

the emotional well-being of senior high school students.

Globally, physical inactivity contributes to a substantial proportion of

diabetes, ischaemic heart disease, breast cancer, and colon cancer cases.

Approximately 31% of the world's population fails to meet the recommended

levels of physical activity for optimal health benefits. Alarmingly, only a limited

number of countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region systematically

monitor physical activity levels in adults and children, and few have

implemented comprehensive measures to increase activity levels through

sports, recreation, cycling, and walking.

This study aims to bridge the existing research gap by investigating the

relationship between sport participation and its impact on the physical and

mental well-being of senior high school students. By exploring the potential

benefits of sports activities, this research intends to provide valuable insights

into the significance of promoting an active lifestyle among adolescents.

The World Health Assembly's Resolution WHA 57.17 in 2004 emphasized

the global strategy on diet, physical activity, and health, urging Member States

to develop national plans to promote physical activity. Furthermore, the UN

High-level Meeting on Non-Communicable Prevention and Control in 2011

reaffirmed the call for action to reduce physical inactivity. In May 2013,

Member States endorsed the objective of a 10% reduction in physical inactivity

by 2025.

During the Fifty-ninth Session of the Regional Committee, Member

States passed resolution EM/RC59, endorsing a framework for action to

implement the UN Political Declaration on Non-communicable Diseases. This

includes the implementation of global recommendations on physical activity,

as well as utilizing mass media and educational institutions for large-scale and

sustained actions.

Regular physical activity has been associated with a significant reduction

in the risk of heart disease by 30%, diabetes by 27%, and breast and colon

cancers by 21%-25%. Therefore, understanding the impact of sport

participation on the physical and mental well-being of senior high school

students is vital for promoting healthier lifestyles and reducing the burden of

non-communicable diseases in this population.

Statement of the Problem

This study was conducted to examine how students of senior high

maintained their physical and mental health by engaging in physical activities.

It also aimed to identify the factors that senior high school students of Castor

Z. Conception Memorial National High School considered when participating in

physical activities, including muscle strength, mental strength, endurance,

and coordination.

1. What are the benefits of engaging in sports for physical and mental well-

being?

2. What are the motivations to engage in sports activities?

3. How does engaging in sports activities affect their social and personal

life?

4. What are the realizations learned in engaging in sports activities?

Significance of the Study

The importance of the study was to know the importance of physical

activities for all senior high school students. Physical activities improved our

physical and mental strength. In these days, teenagers spent a lot of time on

their phones, lacked exercise, and were always stressed because of schoolwork,

so that's why we needed to do some physical activities to release stress.

Students: This study can help the students manage their time while

performing physical activity and attending school at the same time.

Family and Friends: This study can help spending quality time with family

and friends to performing physical activity in their house.

Athletes: This study can help to overcome problems, enhance performance,

achieve our goals and to develop their skills in performing physical activity.

Researchers: Someone whose job it is to carefully study a topic, especially to

learn new information or gain a deeper understanding of the topic.

Future Researchers: This study can serve as a reference for future

researchers and give them more ideas about the same topic that we chose to

study.

Definition of terms

Academic: It is used to describe work or a school, college, or university that

places emphasis on studying and reasoning rather than practical or technical

skills.

Benefits: Something that produces good or helpful results or effects that

promotes well-being.

Education: The act or process of imparting or acquiring particular knowledge

or skills, as for a profession.

General Education: General education includes educational programs that

are designed to prepare students for entry into vocational education but that

do not prepare them for employment in a particular occupation or trade or

lead directly to a labor market-relevant qualification.

Mental Well-Being: Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and

social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps

determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices.

Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and

adolescence through adulthood.

Motivation: It refers to the underlying reasons, desires, or needs that

influence and energize human behavior. Motivation can arise from various

sources, including personal aspirations, external rewards, social

expectations, or internal drives.

Physical Activity: Physical activity is defined as any voluntary bodily

movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure.

Senior High School: A secondary school typically comprising the three

highest grades

Sports: Sports are human activities involving physical exertion and skill as

the primary focus, with elements of competition or social participation where

rules and patterns of behavior governing the activity exist formally through

organization and are generally recognized as a sport.

Strand: It is a consistent thread running through a course offer, irrespective

of its subject content.

Chapter II

METHODOLOGY

This chapter included a detailed description of the research methodology

that was utilized in the study. The chapter had been organized into several

sections that provided a framework within which to describe the research

procedures. The chapter began with a brief description of the research design.

Attention was then given in the discussion to the study population, the locale

of the place where the researcher gathered the data, the data gathering

technique and instruments, the data gathering procedures, customary

evaluation to establish the trustworthiness of the data, and the data analysis.

Research Design

The qualitative research utilized the phenomenological study method.

The researchers presumed that this was the most appropriate and relevant

method for inquiring into the comprehensive analysis and exploration of the

lived experiences encountered by the senior high school students who

participated in the physical activity.

As stated by Creswell (2013), phenomenology was an approach to

qualitative research that focused on the commonality of a lived experience

within a particular group. The fundamental goal of the approach was to arrive

at a description of the nature of the particular phenomenon. They were based

in a paradigm of personal knowledge and subjectivity and emphasized the

importance of personal perspective and interpretation.

Qualitative research was considered to be the most applicable for this

research as the purpose of this study was to describe and explore the lived

experiences of Senior High School students on their physical activity.

According to Denzin and Lincoln (2005), (1) qualitative research was a

major branch of inquiry in the social sciences, encompassing a wide range of

phenomena. Qualitative studies shared a naturalistic and situated concern as

the basis of their inquiry: they sought to study phenomena through a person's

perspective. (2) Qualitative research was intended to deeply explore,

understand, and interpret social phenomena within its natural setting, and (3)

it was a multifaceted research method involving an interpretative, naturalistic

approach to subject matter. The multifaceted nature of qualitative research

enabled researchers to develop a holistic picture of the phenomenon in

question.

Population

The sample of the study includes participants who meet the given

qualifications set for the study. The qualification set is as follows(1) The

participants were required to be senior high school students. (2) They had to be

from Castor Z. Concepcion Memorial National High School. (3) They were

expected to have participated in sports events within the school or competed

with other schools. The number of participants who would have participated in

the study depended on the answers of the participants until it satisfied its

saturation. In selecting the participants, the researchers chose two (2) students

in every strand of senior high school who had participated in the activity. The

participants were selected through purposive sampling, where a given criterion

was provided for choosing participants.

Locale of the Study

The study was conducted in Brgy. Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

particularly at Castor Z. Concepcion Memorial National High School. The

researchers opted to conduct the study for the following reasons: (1) the

researchers are accessible to the school; (2) Senior High School Grade 11

students of the particular school that have conducted the Physical activity and

(3) observed lived experiences encountered by the participants in their activity

are present.

Data Gathering Procedure

The following procedures were utilized in gathering data: a request letter

for the approval of conducting the study was prepared by the researchers. The

names and strands were listed with their corresponding section. On the

presentation to the participants, some basic and essential information about

the study as well as the researchers were introduced. Furthermore,

researchers discussed the benefits of the study, to whom it was benefit and

how they will be benefited. The participants were given opportunity to ask

questions and clarifications. Researchers allowed the participants to affix the

signature on the consent letter as a sign of the confirmation in their

willingness to participate in the study. As regards to the dates, time and

location of the interview, an agreement between the researchers and the

participants was set in order to avoid too much disturbance on their part.

Data Gathering Tool

This study utilized variety of instruments such as interview guide

questions, pen and papers, camera, voice recorder and other tools that were

utilized for the documentation and data accumulation. The guide questions

were made relevant to the level of knowledge of the participants so that they

would be able to easily understand and answer the questions comfortably.

Some questions were prepared and corresponding follow-up questions were

made and asked to the participants during the interview.

Cameras were operated for documentation, which served as evidence in

conducting the data gathering to prevent biases. Aside from note-taking

answers given by the participants, voice recorders were used to record all data

and information, wherein it was served as a reference for quoted answers of

participants.

Ethical Consideration

Researchers were opted to further provide truthful information and

guaranteed that the information they were contributed were remained

confidential and private as well as the participants’ identity. The names of the

participants were optionally specified and they were not forced to answer any

of the questions prepared. Moreover, veracity was also considered in the sense

that all data is truthful and reliable. The researchers chose to conduct the

interview where the participants can feel and answer comfortably. Some

technological devices were used as a tool for data gathering and served as

proof; however, they were not used to discredit one’s decency.

Data Analysis

In data analysis, processes involved were the reaffirmation, evaluation

and interpretation of the experiences encountered by the Grade 12 students on

their month-long selling activity basing on the data that were gathered.

Furthermore, this involved the discussion on relevance whether the data is

relevant or if it is use in the study. (1) The data that were gathered and

recorded during the interview were transcribed into written words by the

researchers, (2) written information were read several times, (3)the researchers

grouped the answers of the participants into cluster according to their

similarities (4) and created themes and make thematic analysis about the data

collected.

Result and Discussion

Vitality boost refers to state of enhanced energy, stamina, and overall

physical and mental performance achieved through various means. It involves

strategies, practices, and techniques aimed to maximizing an athlete’s vitality

or life force to improve their athletic abilities and achieve peak performance.

Golf stated that,

“Engaging in sports can benefit physical and mental well-being in several

ways. For me, sports help improves cardiovascular health, build strength and

endurance, enhance flexibility, and promote overall fitness. Sports also

contribute to weight management and can reduce the risk of chronic diseases

like obesity, diabetes, and heart conditions. Mentally, sports provide an outlet for

stress and anxiety, improve mood and self-esteem, boost cognitive function, and

promote better sleep patterns.”

Tennis stated that,

“Engaging in sports benefits people in various ways. In addition to

improving physical health, it also fosters healthy mental health and improves

interpersonal abilities.”

Badminton stated that,

“As your strength, skills, and stamina increase through playing sports,

your self-image will improve as well.”

Boxing stated that,

“It helps in improving my moods, improving my sleep, reducing stress,

making my body healthier, and giving me strong bones.”

Wrestling stated that,

“It depends on the individual, but for me, it's about being consistent in

how you participate and being accountable in how you carry out your

engagement.”

Based on the responses provided by Golf, Tennis, Badminton, Boxing,

and Wrestling it can be concluded that engaging in sports offers numerous

benefits for both physical and mental well-being. It improved cardiovascular

health, strength, endurance, flexibility, and overall fitness. Sports contribute to

weight management and reducing the risk of chronic diseases, and serves as

an outlet for stress and anxiety. They also enhance mood, self-esteem,

cognitive function, and sleep patterns. Sports foster healthy mental health and

improve interpersonal abilities. Consistency, accountability, and active

engagement are key for reaping the benefits. Overall, sports offer a holistic

approach to improving overall health and promoting a positive lifestyle.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "Physical activity

such as sports has a positive effect on a person's physical well-being, with

increased muscular strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness, leading to

overall better health outcomes" (WHO, 2019). According to a study published

in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine, "Physical activity through

sports has been shown to have positive effects on mental health by reducing

symptoms of anxiety and depression, improving mood, and enhancing overall

psychological well-being" (Loprinzi et al., 2019). A research article published in

the Journal of Pediatrics states, "Participating in sports can improve cognitive

function, attention, and memory, leading to potential benefits in academic

performance and cognitive development" (Chaddock-Heyman et al., 2018).

Holistic Well-being

Sports promote holistic well-being by addressing the interconnected

nature of physical, mental, and emotional health. Engaging in sports activities

not only enhances physical fitness but also serves as a means to effectively

manage stress, uplift mood, alleviate sadness, and promote social interaction

and enjoyment. Furthermore, sports contribute to weight loss and positive

body image, fostering a comprehensive sense of well-being. By recognizing the

interplay between these aspects, sports provide a pathway to a more balanced

and fulfilled life, supporting individuals in their journey towards holistic well-

being.

Golf stated that,

“Participating in sports has had a positive impact on both my physical and

mental health. Sports has helped me manage my stress effectively. When I

engage in physical activities like running or playing a team sport, I experience a

release of endorphins that uplift my mood and alleviate stress.”

Tennis stated that,

“Participating in sports is one of the reasons why I avoid being sad, and it

is also the reason why my immune system is stronger.”

Badminton stated that,

“It can give you an opportunity to meet other people and have fun.”

Boxing stated that,

“When I’m stressed in academia, I play volleyball to lessen my stress, and

it helps me lose some weight.”

Wrestling stated that,

”When I’m stressed, sports give me the opportunity to have fun and relax

away from those different problems. Furthermore, it helped me achieve my slim

body, considering it one of the positive impacts of sports.”

Based on the respondents' answers, participating in sports has a positive

impact on both physical and mental health, as highlighted by the respondents.

Engaging in activities like running or team sports releases endorphins,

Based on the respondents' answers, it is evident that Motivation is

crucial for consistent engagement in sports and physical activities. Strategies

such as setting goals, aligning activities with personal interests, and

appreciating support help maintain motivation. Anticipating playing with

others, personal goals, hobbies, and friendships contribute to the drive to

participate. The desire for self-improvement and personal growth also serves as

a strong motivating factor. By understanding and utilizing these strategies and

factors, individuals can cultivate sustained motivation and enjoy their

involvement in sports and physical activities.

Maintaining motivation for consistent engagement in sports activities

can be challenging but there are several strategies that can help. One

approach is to set specific, achievable goals that provide a sense of purpose

and direction. According to a study published in the Journal of Sport and

Exercise Psychology, goal setting is positively correlated with increased

motivation and performance in sports (Locke & Latham, 1990).

Creating a supportive social environment can also enhance motivation. A

impacting their physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being.

“On a social level, sports have allowed me to meet new people who share

similar interests and passions. Joining sports teams or clubs has provided

opportunities for building friendships, fostering a sense of community, and

developing teamwork skills. Sports have also enhanced my personal life by

promoting self-discipline, time management, and goal setting.”

sports positively influences social and personal aspects of an individual's life.

The research examined the relationship between sports participation and

social capital, health, and well-being in adults. The findings revealed that

individuals who actively participated in sports reported higher levels of social

interaction, social support, and community engagement. Moreover, sports

involvement was associated with improved physical health, mental well-being,

and overall quality of life.

Personal Development & Well-being through Sports refers to the positive

impact that engaging in sports activities has on an individual's personal

growth, mental and physical well-being, and overall quality of life. It

encompasses themes such as perseverance, resilience, teamwork, discipline,

involve setbacks, failures, and moments of adversity, but by pushing through

importance of teamwork and collaboration. Working together with teammates

towards a common goal has shown me the power of collective effort and the

ability to achieve more as a group. Lastly, sports have instilled in me a sense of

discipline and self-motivation. The dedication required to maintain a regular

training routine or to improve skills has translated into a stronger work ethic and

a belief in the power of consistent effort. These realizations have influenced me

to approach various aspects of life with a positive mindset, resilience, and a

commitment to continuous self-improvement.”

Chapter IV

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

The study Staying Active, Staying Sharp: Exploring the Physical and

Mental Benefits of Sport Participation in Senior High School Students was

conducted and resulted from the exploration of the experiences of senior high

school students with their sports participation.

The participants were the senior high school students of Castor Z.

Conception Memorial National High School who have participated in sports

events within the school or competed against other schools. The study was

conducted at the Brgy, Antonino, Balaoan, La Union, particularly in Castor Z.

Conception Memorial National High School.

The researchers used qualitative methods, specifically the

phenomenological approach, as their research design and gave the importance

of a good qualitative study. The researchers conducted a face-to-face interview

and utilize structured interview guide in gathering data. The actual conduction

of the study was in 2nd Semester of February 2023 to June 2023 of School

Year 2022-2023. The participants were senior high school students and were

chosen through convenience sampling, in which a set of criteria was utilized.

Finding and Eidetic Insights

From the analysis and interpretation of data, the following themes were

identified.

1. The theme entitled “Vitality Boost” talks about the different ways of

engaging in sports can benefits physical and mental well-being of

individuals.

2. The theme entitled “Holistic Well-Being” talks about the positive impact

of participating sports in physical and mental health of individual.

3. The theme entitled “Inspirational Motivation” talks about the motivations

of individual in engaging sports activity.

4. The theme entitled “Transformation” talks about the ways in which

participating in sports has influenced affect an individual's social and

personal life

5. The theme entitled “Personal Development & Well-Being” talks about the

realizations and insights that individuals have gained through their

experiences with sports and how these realizations have influenced

them.

Conclusions

Based on the findings, the following conclusions are formulated:

1. It was concluded that in choosing sports activities, Senior High School

students of Castor are very much influenced by why they are joining

sports activities. The next factor is the motivational traits of being an

athlete student in terms of teamwork, perseverance, responsibility,

mental health.

2. One of the reasons why they are joining sports is to develop their self-

trust and also to interact with other co-athletes. Additionally, engaging

in regular physical activity can enhance cognitive function, including

memory, attention, and problem-solving skills, ultimately improving

academic performance.

3. The most motivational trait that influences them is teamwork. Teamwork

in sports also provides an avenue for social interaction and community

engagement. It develops strong communication and leadership skills.

Senior High school students who participate in sports often form strong

bonds and develop a sense of camaraderie with their teammates.

4. Participating in sports gives students motivation and helps them escape

from stress and depression. Additionally, staying active through sports

helps seniors maintain a healthy weight, improve cardiovascular health,

and strengthen muscles and bones. Physical activity reduces the risk of

depression, stress, anxiety, and chronic diseases such as heart disease,

diabetes, and obesity.

5. Sports participation teaches valuable life skills such as discipline,

perseverance, goal setting, and time management. By engaging in sports,

Senior High School students can learn to overcome challenges, set and

achieve goals, and develop a strong work ethic.

Recommendations

Based on the result of the study, the researchers presented the following

recommendations:

1. The school administration should continue holding sports programs that

can help students improve their physical and mental health.

2. The school administration should have to provide more facilities to have

an area where athletes can practice and perform comfortably.

3. We strongly recommend that the school administration start hiring a

more qualified, experienced, and professional individual with an

exemplary track record in the field of training, in order to ensure a

marked improvement in the overall training efficacy and the subsequent

enhancement of the requisite skills and competencies possessed by the

trainees.

4. It is highly recommended that a greater number of students within the

school community be actively encouraged to engage in regular physical

activity.
