3D Modelling - May23

This document provides an assignment brief for a 3D modelling job. It outlines the learning outcomes, assessment criteria, and requirements for the submission. Students must create training videos demonstrating how to model various 3D assets, propose a short film with corresponding 3D assets, and submit a report reflecting on the process. The submission will be assessed based on the student's ability to plan the development of 3D models, apply textures and lighting, and present finished models for media contexts.

Assignment Brief and Guidance

3D graphics are used in every aspect of the media industry. They allow for the conceptualization
and visualization of assets for use in film and television, games, journalism, and a variety of other
media. The ability to rapidly modify objects through an iterative process enables the creation of
production-ready models that fit within the constraints of the production.

You will learn to conceptualize, develop, and implement 3D models for media productions using
industry-standard practices as they explore 3D modelling packages. They will investigate a variety
of modelling tools and techniques in order to create models that meet the requirements and
constraints of the intended product. They will use 2D and 3D painting and editing software to
create textures that can be applied to models to make them fit into specific media contexts for
various purposes.

You have applied for a full-time 3D generalist position in an animation production studio. You have
been chosen for the second interview by the Creative Director (CD) in which you must present the
work so that the CD could assess your technical abilities. You will have to create a project portfolio
ranging from concept to creation of the 3D assets based on the requirements listed by the studios
job advertisement.

1. Part 1 – Screen recorded training videos on how these 3D assets can be created from concept
to completion. You must also include the source files and final output.
a. One scene using basic primitives.
b. Seven vehicles using low-poly.
c. Hammer and axe model, knife using the plane object.
d. Two guns with proper unwrap and texture.

2. Part 2 – Short film assets

You must propose a short animated film. Write the story (recommended word count: 250). You
will be responsible for the creation of all required 3D assets for the short film, from concept to
completion. You must explain how the assets could be re-used for a game development project

Use this opportunity to show off your skills and abilities in order to land the job.

What should your submission include (but not limited to):

1. Investigations – how 3d modeling has evolved, on developments of 3D modelling

software tools, their influence on various media productions, including the 3D modelling
pipeline with reference to other artists' techniques and processes.

2. Part 1 content – Source files and final output.

3. Part 2 content – Story, sketches, concepts and prototypes, source files, screen recorded
videos on how these assets were created, and final output.

4. Report - on how you completed the project from start to completion. This should include
the story, concept art/sketches, asset file management, the development process of how
you created each asset, textures and lighting, production log, the changes you would do to
re-use the assets for a game development project, evaluation of feedback with annotated
screen captures of the changes, and your reflection.

Your grade is assessed by your submission. To ensure that your submission meets the
requirements, you must carefully read the learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

All submissions must be in PDF format unless specified. While there will be no consequences for
exceeding the length of your pitch/presentation or word count, keep in mind that precision and
clarity are hallmarks of professional work. Work that is too lengthy demonstrates a lack of
professionalism.

All information sources and resources used to complete this assignment, including websites, must
be stated and correctly referenced. No credit will be given for extensive copying from information
sources, and your submitted work may be checked for plagiarism.
